Hi there,

I'm planning on going for a slightly longer ride to practice for the Grand Challenge. I plan on doing the Kopu Mobil to Kopu Mobil part of the Coro Loop twice.

Sunday 5th Feb

Meet at Autobahn Papakura

At 10:30am depart 11am.

Reach Kopu Mobil around 12 - 12:30 pm

There will be minimal stops and the pace will be around the medium mark. The second loop and the last parts of the ride back to Auckland may in the dark depending on how long it takes.

I have timed the ride based on previous experience as follows.

Autobahn to Kopu Mobil - 1 to 1 and a half hours.
Planned Arrival - 12:15-12:30 pm

Lunch: 12:30 - 1pm.

Kopu Mobil to Kopu Mobil - non-stop with 1 fuel break - 2 hrs 10 mins to 2 hrs 30 mins in very heavy traffic. Some amount of lane splitting and filtering will be required and expected.
Planned Arrival - 3:30pm

Second Loop in the reverse direction to the first loop

Kopu Mobil - Kopu Mobil again non-stop, stopping for fuel as required.
Planned Arrival - 6:30pm

Depart Kopu Mobil back via Miranda, Hunuas, etc and arrival back to Auckland around 8-9pm taking it fairly easy.

I have a target time of 8-8.5 hours for the entire ride. Please note part of the ride may be in the dark.

Anyone up to the challenge is invited.

Good Start JSG. Riding down to Gisborne to the One Night Stand via Tauranga from Whangarei that WE and return (400km to Tauranga, 300km TGA to Gisborne, so that's 1400km just to get there and back) so will not be able to join you.

I don't mind the bouncing, keeps me awake....... horribly wallowy in the corners though......

Be good to have some company looks like all the other regulars are too busy.

Lets see how much maintenance I can get done on Sat.

Why not do a figure 8 around the full course? Start at Kopu then go up to Coromandel town then back around through Whitianga to Kopu again, down to Paeroa through the gorge to Wahi and back up to Kopu again.

I've been thinking of doing that, but going Kopu, Paeroa, Waihi, Whangamata, Kopu for lunch and to hook up with those that want to do the regular loop, then carrying on with the top half.

That's a great idea W, will do it someday. The purpose of this ride is to cover the distance as quickly and consistently as possible. Therefore I am going to stick to very familiar roads.

I'm not that familiar with the Waihi turn off and don't want to waste time looking for directions. I really want to try and make that 8-8.5 hr target.

If this is practice for the Grand Challenge wouldn'tit be best to do it on roads you don't know all that well?

Cheers for the company from Papakura to Coro guys.

Was back home by 8:30.

All in all 800ks. Left home very close to 11am so all in all the ride took 9.5 hours.

I sort of went off track and had lunch with the other KB'ers who turned up and spent an hour there. Otherwise lunch was supposed to be a pie while the bike gets refueled......

So not-counting the lunch the ride took 8.5 hours.

All in all it was pretty easy.

I'd like to the coro loop thrice in a day in about a months time. As that would make it an exact 1000ks.

Will keep you guys updated. Hopefully there'll be more than me on that ride.

See ya:ride:

Saw a few of you guys go past while we were parked up at the Coroglen. A small bunch of us (5 to be exact) did the extended loop. Me, Fish, Kornholio, Spud and Gav (doesn't post here) met up at Kopu. We then stopped at pubs in Coromandel, Whitianga, Coroglen, Whangamata and Waikino cos it was so farken hot we needed lots of liquid (plenty of lemonade/water was had). A couple of others joined us from Coroglen to Whangamata (very amusing and interesting but I won't say what in an open forum). We topped it off with a bbq at Spuds place. Only problem (besides dehydration) was that my oil light came on if I went too fast on the last leg, so it was pretty slow from Waikino to Spuds. Topped up with a little bit of oil at Spuds and had a very quiet cruise back to Hamilton

One of the bikes along was very interesting. Gav had a Mike Hailwood rep model Duke that he'd owned for 20 years. Very cool. Although at one point he grounded the centre stand and jumped a foot sideways.

Hehe was most impressed with Gavs 'Mike the bike' bike....umm the last pub was Waikino Shane not Waituna but thats OK it was a long day(12 hrs there and back)
Ummm yeah the Coro to Whanga leg....holy fucken shit!!!!!!!
Yes best not say too much about that tho LOL
Wickedly fine weather too, which is more than I can say about today :(
So did the top up do the trick on the way home then? Im doing sweet fuck all today as I am rooted and have a sore neck(damn turbulence :P )

Mental Trousers
6th February 2006, 13:10
opps, cheers for that. I was kinda brain dead when I wrote that lol

Yep, the top up got me home sweet as. But today - holy crap am I tired. I didn't get home until 10:45pm, climbed in the shower was all the sweat off then sat in front of the pc for a short time while my brain etc wound down so I didn't get to bed until about midnight.

Was very impressed when we had a look at Gav's tyres at Waikino. His back tyre looked similar to everyone elses - no chicken strip and wearing nicely. But the front was totally different. The fronts on modern bikes tend to have a small chicken strip as they're counter steered a hell of a lot, whereas the front of his Mike the Bike had ribbons of rubber peeling away from the edge.

And as for Coroglen to Whangamata - that's the sort of thing that biker legends are made of.

The only reason I chose the loop is cos it's pretty safe and not too far - meaning I can stop and come home if I want to.

Plan to do a 22 night ride soon.

My restricted license is the only thing stopping me from doing overnight rides, otherwise I do "The Dwive" or Huia rd once or twice a week after work.

For a change, why not ride to New Plymouth and back in one day..
They will be roads that you don't know... and it can be done in a day trip.

You need roads that you don't know, if you are going to do this enduro ride.
As the roads they they travel on will be unknown to you.

You know the Coro loop, 22, 16 and Scenic drive well... so start challenging yourself, find new roads...

Take a tent and camp out overnight if you are past your curfew...and then head back in the morning.

So, like Zapf said start riding roads that you haven't been on... to start looking out for the un-expected things on a road... as you will need all those required skills for the Enduro ride.
