I've had this thought that a GB400 front end should bolt straight up to the CB400F: the advantage would be (slightly) more modern fork, but a muuuuch better brake with an alloy (vs steel) rim. lighter guard too for a reduction in unsprung weight.

the rear wheel, too looks like a bolt up (its drum same as the CB) and again the advantage would be the lighter rim.

anybody have one lying about? or bits for one? I would be willing to part out what I dont need...

Also more modern break pads, drilled disks and steel braided lines will beaf up the front breaks no end.

thanks, but I like my 400/4.

Im a member of the sohc/4 board as well, and the brakes on the SOHC hondas is the big difference between that and a modern bike. (apart from the handling and the horsepower.... :) )

I like playing about with the 400/4 and want to keep it, but the brake is appalling.

It has had a new braided steel line, new pads, been completely apart and cleaned, and had the hacksaw cut through the pad to stop it squealing (which partially worked). Next step is drilling the disc, but all the templates I have found are for 550 and up discs: the 400's disc is only 265mm, but 7mm thick.

I used to own a GB (the very first bike I ever bought new... off Sawyer Honda in Kent Tce in Wellingtron) and what started this current train of thought was parking next to one outside work the other day and going, crikey, they are similar.

Its a project, so I am not in a hurry.

I just got a machine shop to drill my 550 disks. No template involved. Just asked them to drill so many hole equidistent apart. I've found using both brakes at the same time along with engine breaking, pulls the 550 to a halt quite quickly. One point, the original drum brake is probably better than the GB one.

Wish you well on your project btw.
