In light of the ALL the recent threads with biker cop related content, I was wondering how many of the biker cops here have their own bikes and if they use them for daily commuting?

Not all do. I spoke to a big Maori dude who was doing seatbelt checks outside my office (there were 2 cop bikes and two patrol cars, a commendable use of police resources if you ask me!) and he said he doesn't even ride outside the job.

Of course not, he rides the cop bike, and his "commute" is round and round, involving parking up at lights :Pokey:
sheesh... how obvious was that??

I cant believe not one cop replied to this thread!
I guess this thread held as much promise as one titled "Has anyone tried online dating?", "Advice needed for transgender operation", and "This rash wont clear up, should I seek medical attention?".

No, that would suggest I was interested in gathering information about ALL the police who frequent this forum, when all I was curious about was whether bikecops ride to work or not.
The lack of response is interesting, 'tis but a very innocent question, maybe none of our law-enforcing brethern have seen it yet...although they have been very vocal on other threads, hmmm.
Maybe they just consider it a waste of time and not worthy of reply. Do not engage the suspect in ideal banter, as you may become distracted or something.
I just thought as a group of bikers they must put in some serious saddle time, more then most of us, I'll bet. I look forward to my commute, such that it is, but if I rode the highways and byways of the country all day I think I might not be so enthaused by the prospect of my trip home. Hey, maybe thats just me, what say the boys!

I might post a thread asking what other Electroincs Engineers ride etc...Im sure that we will have a reasonable proportion of EE's responding.
Web developers, are you any more secretive/selective?
Lets not get started on teat-tuggers.

Thought about using a similiar example, There appears to be a glut of IT bodies here - but it didn't really fill the ride to work, ride at work, ride home criteria. Anyway who cares what IT numpties ride, (pillion?)

At a wild guess here, there is probably only maybe a dozen biker cops in the entire country, and even that figure is probably too high...less those that don't know about KB, less those who are not on line at present and just doing other stuff, doesn't leave too many to reply now, does it???
dawnrazor
2nd February 2006, 09:11
A dozen ! seriously, wow - well that would explain somethings, well teat tuggers it is then - what do you guys ride, and quads don't count.
The_Dover
2nd February 2006, 09:34
Nah, there'd be more than a dozen. Mr Poo's and I saw about a dozen bacon bikes heading over the Rimataka's on Saturday in the space of 5 minutes.
It gave me an itchy trigger finger.

Nah...wouldn't mind though...don't think they would let me on my L plate (which should be gone by Saturday!)... Lucky if I can get a car some days, let alone hope to have cop bikes around here.

Interesting sidelight - From the December 2005 Police News
Blue Knights have 553 chapters worldwide
The Blue Knights® is a non-profit fraternal
organisation consisting of active and retired law
enforcement men and women who enjoy riding
motorcycles.
In the Spring of 1974, several law enforcement
officers from the Bangor, Maine (USA) area
met and and formed a small, local motorcycle
club. The rest, as they say, is history. There are
now 553 chapters and almost 19,000 members
in 28 countries.
Goals
The club’s purpose and goals are:
• to provide for the mutual assistance,
enjoyment, entertainment, education,
physical, mental and social benefit of its
members and the general public;
• to promote and advance the sport of
motorcycling and the safety of motorcycling;
• to serve the interests of motorcycle owners
and users;
• to promote by example and any other
acceptable means, safe use, operation and
enjoyment of motorcycles; and
• to develop a fraternal spirit between law
enforcement personnel and the general
public.
Valuable charity work
In the last 14 years, Blue Knights has donated
to numerous charities; contributing time in the
amount of 151,208 man hours, goods with an
estimated value of $512,029 and $4,423,636
in cash (USD).
Blue Knight’s members espouse the adage:
“There are no strangers, only friends you
haven’t met.”
If you are interested, or you know of any ex-
Police members who fit the qualifications for
membership, please feel free to contact Gxxxxxx
Lxxxxx via Lotus Notes or call him on xxxxxx

Police Station on DD xxxxxxxx or xxxxxxxx.
(I removed the phone numbers etc - those qualified will know them I imagine)

My apologies for not replying sooner. I have only just seen the thread (and at this time of the morning its probably a surprise I did see it).
I take the police bike to work more or less every day so no, I don't do the commute thing on the Blackbird... in fact, after riding all day, the last thing I feel like is going for another ride so it is really just a "toy" for those nice days when I'm not working (& usually when the other half wants to go for a ride somewhere). As I'm sure you can all appreciate, the concentration level of not only riding all day but going to jobs, avoiding cars at speed, driving through intersections against the red light to catch red light runners, looking for bad driving etc just makes me want to sit down and relax at the end of the day... not that I am complaining - its good fun too and not many people get paid to ride a bike (albeit a BMW).
I think there are about 25-30 bike cops nationwide - I only know of one or two others on this site.

I can relate to that bikeycop. My private bike was for fanging on something that handled well and was quick. Why use your own to commute when there's a work bike available?

See thats what I thought might be the case, I know a bike courier in london, does BIG BIG miles every year, and pretty much now only rides for work now.
Its like imagine your a male gynaecologist, the last thing you want to see when you get home is your wife, naked on the bed with her legs in the air.
(Just a humourous example, not a comparision of professions)
Didn't realise there where so few bike cops here/ in the country.
Thanks for the reply, Hey do you have to provide your own gear?
The_Dover

I dunno, as a comparison of professions it's not so far off.
Both have to work with cunts all day!

3rd February 2006, 08:53
Most of the bikes are in the main centres. They are used for traffic / motorway work as well as motorcade detail for VIP tours. The dept supplies all the gear. So at the end of the day they get a full kit and a bike and get paid for it. Not too bad, and if need be have the access to a cage if required.
