so I'll put it here.

I test rode an '81 CB250RS today, just like the one I had when I was 17, it ran quite well and everything checked out, and it was great around town but it seemed to be an effort for it to pull 100k, like it was out of steam or something, it was happier in 4th than in top, not what I remember at all. It seemed too slow! even for a 250 single
I thought that maybe it was geared too high, but the back sprocket is the biggest I have ever seen on a road bike, like a trailbike one or something, it doesnt smoke and is very quiet at 44000 kms so must have been reconed, but it has been crashed, the instruments have been broken and fixed (complete with bog), the seat needs recovered, the bars and brake lever need replaced, and the mirrors don't match.
Im very sure the motor its self is sound, no smoke, no leaks, no noises.
It has a reg, and wof and the seller wants $800 ono.
is it worth it, I want a commuter untill I get my full,(Im not a learner, but thats the only licence I ever got around to getting), but I will have to do about 25 km a day on the highway going to work, and it seemed to be a big effort from this particular bike, Im sure the one I had when I was a kid was much faster like 140+

Check the front sprocket. it might be a 12 tooth. You can go up to a 14. If it will fit. If you feel it is not doing what you want don't buy it. My son has a GPX 250. He paid that for it and we did cam chain etc and it is a good bike. We swapped bikes a couple of weeks ago and I really could not live with a 250 after having a 750. Your perception of what a 250 did a few years ago could be just that. It's down to you really.

Had a CB/RS myself as a teenager, damn fine old machines. a mate has one for his work commuter (its got over 100 thou on the clock). the one i had would pull an indicated 140+ with me flat on the tank and my mates one i've paced at 130+ on my ZXR, so working hard at 100 isn't good.
Std gearing is 14/44
with it being an 81 model & sporting battle damage $500 would really pull it up even with a quiet motor. if its had a decent bin in the front end, check how straight it is, the front forks are fairly soft & bend easy if dinged & the swingarm is the same. so sight it through a straight line & check sprocket alignment too.

My second bike was one of these babies. Altho I thought it was a good commuter at the time, I can't ever remember getting that sort of speed out of it, certainly not for any sustained period.

the one I had when I was 17 was so bent that it was continuously breaking engine mounts at the top, and would leave two wheel tracks in a straight line. this one is straight, I checked that, and no hands at 70ks was steady as, theres no fork damage, and all the bushes and bearings are sweet as, my old one had an XR piston, bore, head and cam on it so that might have made it faster, ill go back tonight and check the gearing and maybe take it for another ride
