New Riders Day Out 2
March 5th

Evening folks...

As shown by the previous day out, and the success of similar ventures in Wellington, Gremlin and I have decided to host another day out for new riders.

Should be a good laugh... chance to get to know some more KBers both new and old, and have a nice easy paced ride in the country.

Calender event if you wish to register is here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=721&day=2006-3-5&)

Ride leaving Westgate Shell Station - Meet at 10:30, leave 11.

Update - Recon ride on Saturday 4th March to get to know route / check for any hazards, pace will be medium... all welcome but no absolute beginners please... sign up here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=761&day=2006-3-4&)

Yes, the famous two are at it again.

I'm currently sorting out a route, Wellsford is in mind, but I need to make a loop, and potentially finish where we started. If the ride is to Wellsford, I will also need a few more pointers.

This will run in the same format again, but with the odd tweak to correct a few mistakes. Besides the learners, we will need instructors to help the learners skills, group leaders who are very familiar with the route, and pointers for turns.

And I will need my pretty haz vest again tristan

Right, I have done a few rides, and done the route.

We will leave Westgate, go along 16 until Old North Rd. Then right into Peak Rd, then right onto 16 again to Kaukapakapa. From there, up 16 to Wellsford. Stops will be Kaukapakapa, just after the railway lines, on the right hand bend, and the Scenic Lookout just before Wellsford.

Coming back, the route will simply be reversed, but heading back, we won't stop at the Lookout since its too soon after Wellsford. Stopping again at Westgate to finish the ride, and final thanks as usual etc.

Still trying to build the map... its taking ages. Leaving time still to be decided, need to talk to Weasel first.

One of the more common and fairly easy rides we do is as you describe. Meet at Shell Westgate, up Hwy 16, turn right onto Old North Rd, right onto Peak Rd and right again back onto Hwy 16 to Wellsford.

I would avoid Hwy 1 for the return and just come back the same way. You should only need markers at the turn offs onto Old North Rd, Peak Rd and back onto Hwy 16 with strict instructions that unless told otherwise people do not turn off anywhere.

The road is a nice mixture of tighter turns, long straights and nice sweepers.

Quite a long ride to Wellsford and return for a new newbie but for a group with some experience it should be a doddle.

Good luck and have fun!

i'm not experienced, but as a noobie, i have ridden those roads and survived, i liked them.... and yay for starting at westgate.

Old north road to Hellensville is a nice ride then from Hellensville noth to Wellsford is quite a long ride I think you should maybee look at doing SH1 back to Albany then the River Head Coatsville road backto just south of Kumeue then its just a left back on the main road back to Westgate this avoids doing a repetitive backtrack ride my $0.02 Oh and as always Im Happy to lend a helping hand doing what ever Weasel and Gremlin please pm me if you need me to show you the route -ZRXER

This is MY road --well erum I ride it a lot.
could I suggest keeping it really simple for the newbee riders-
Much as i love old north and peak road theres a couple of bits Im not comfortable suggesting as being Newbee stuff.
My suggestiong is to stay on SH16 all the way up. Regroup at Shell Helensville then again breifly at Kaukop and at the lookout. before hitting wellsford.
For those keen to carry on--the Mangawhai road is just loverly.
On the way back retrace your steps but this time loop onto peak and old north -Dunno why but the hazzards dont seem as accute on the return trip
I covered this route on wendsday --The road is clean and clear.
Hazards are-2 one way bridges on old north.
3km into old north-hsn end there is a left hander that is EXTREMELY cut up bu the logging trucks-itll throw a newbee not ready for it.
30km/h blind uphill right hander half way from Kaukop to wellsford
2 small patches of peagravelled roadworks--clearly marked so no real concern.
Also The HP have a dark blue commodore? mufty car lurking up 16
if you carry on to mangawhai only 1 real danger spot --1/2 way to mangawhai theres a clearly marked 35km/h corner--its a downhill tightening left hander --clearly marked with a SLOW DOWN sighn
Dont ignore the sighn cos that corner is a doozie for catchin bikers out.

I know some roads up norf but not really a learner route as you have to go pretty far to avoid the :Police: :Police:

Trisank--Youre prolly right dude -I had other things to worry about at the time --Like--eeep what excuse am I gonna think of etc etc -lucky for me he was "interviewing " a car driver
So watch out for a dark blue XR8

Theres a few other "interesting bits on old nth today but probably irellevant cill closer to the day.

On the way back retrace your steps but this time loop onto peak and old north -Dunno why but the hazzards dont seem as accute on the return trip My 2c: What about the downhill left hander into downhill right hander coming from the Peaks-Old North intersection?

I'd argue that is the most technical part of this stretch of Old North. Certainly the owners of the house on the outside of the right hander think so..

Gremlin
6th February 2006, 13:50
Thanks for that Frosty, just the sorta info I was looking for. I'm busy trying to map the whole area, then its off to see the routes, and which works best, how many k, so on.

Cops aren't really a worry, since the learners will only be doing 110 tops (or the leaders SHOULD be... )

N4CR
6th February 2006, 15:34
Okay just been up sh16 today with merwood.

The road is in generally nice nick, the resurfacing that involved a cone and my bike and a construction worker controlled stop/go along brynderwyns is done... - fucking nice surface and you can get some decent lean going on without any trouble.
That (45k?) left hand corner on old north is still shitty, and keeps getting worse, if you go on the corrugations with anything less than a beemer you will end up in the shrubs :msn-wink:

Traffic was a bit average coming back but the way there was fantastic.

And on a final note... gpr100's own!

As an alternative, turn right at Kaukop onto Kahikitea Flat Road, head south on 17 down through Dairy Flat and turn right onto Coatsville Riverhead Hwy back through to the foot of Old North Rd.

65 kms all up and a really god ride. 30mins for a quick(ish) ride, probably 40 - 45 for a gaggle of newbies.

Ride update - Looks like me and Gremlin are gonna be scouting the route this weekend so we can setup what stops to use and generally know where we're going.

Will post more details on Monday.

Over and out.

Right, post 3 contains an update, route has been set.

Now, come on all potential leaders, instructors and newbies. This day is for newbies, we cater for you guys specifically. Sign up and get some advice on your riding. :woohoo:

edit: Weasel is putting the time in the first post.

not wanting too sound like an idiot but being on a learners you can only go 70 kph on the open road.......

so going up there is going to take a while if your only going to do 70 or are you guys just gunna go for it
anyways lol

i aint one to breach conditions of my license after only just getting it lol

Ixion
21st February 2006, 11:17
There was provision for a 70kph group. In fact the difference is surprisingly small by the end of the day. There's more to motorcycling than a blur y' know

Karma
21st February 2006, 11:23
Yep, what he said...

There will be one or two groups of 70k riders for those that either are not confident to do 100k or don't want to break license conditions.

21st February 2006, 12:22

Karma
21st February 2006, 21:15
Standard ride protocol applies...

If you wanna move from one group to another then please just give me a shout at one of the stops, so that our leaders / tail end charlies know who they've got.

Also, noticed a few people were gassing up as we were about the leave last time, so for you newer folks, good form is to gas up as soon as you arrive, that way went we're ready we can hit the roads.

Any questions... feel free to post up here or PM me, and if you're lucky I might even respond ;)

I can lead a group if you like, i know that road quite well, even where most of the shit on the road (potholes etc) are before i come around corners.

There are a few parts to watch for newbie riders, one being the 35kmh right hander uphill that switches to 35kmh left and then back to the right (needs to done in low gear and not at too much speed as vehicles coming the other way tend to cut the corner - both ways, its known as a downhill reducing radius corner (the disappearing type) so it pays to take it slow. This is near the start.

Then there is a similar setup - medium pace left into 25-30kmh tight changing to a 45kmh sweeper - uphill its not to bad if done at learner pace, but if you take it to fast going back it gets interesting. Also there tends to be oil/petrol/crap on this corner in the wet.

The last thing i would keep in mind is the 45kmh setup about 10km from Wellsford (after the lookout) again if taken at a moderate pace no problems - but just keep an eye on it cause you dont want people bunching up too close if the person in front aint sure about the cornering speed.

does i sound like i know it yet?

Good good...

No idea as yet of ride length, but it'll be more than 2 hours I'd imagine.

We'll be running at a legal pace, with break stops and a lunch somewhere...

Remember this ride is about passing on tips the experienced riders have to the newer riders, and for the new riders to get experience and confidence in their own abilities.

I'm sure Gremin could pipe up on a rough time for the day, as I've not actually done the ride myself yet :(

Ixion
22nd February 2006, 14:05
Nearer 4 hours than 2 I'd say. Remember, some will be limited to 70kph, and the beginners may want to stop a bit to rest and recover.

EDIT: Auckland to Wellsford is 85km - maybe a bit more or a bit less by this route and starting point. That's 170km round trip. Max of 70kph is unlikely to average more than 50kph , so that 3.5 hours travelling time. Plus breaks, lunch etc

I recommend the pub/cafe on the left where 16 meets 1 in Wellsford (name?), good tucker and reasonable cost, nice beer too!
AND they do coffee and other stuff too!
I may be able to come along if another helper type is needed, PM me and I will confirm availability.

Shell Westgate is at the end of the Northwestern Motorway. Turn left at the end of the motorway and continue on for 300 metres or so through two sets of lights. You will see the Shell station on your left just before the roundabout. Entry is before the roundabout but past the second set of lights.

Westgate to Wellsford is almost exactly 80km... maybe 80.3km to be pedantic. Because this route is slightly shorter than the Kaiaua route, this is why we moved the start time to 30min later.

Speed is NOT an issue, this day is for learners, and we don't want them to feel under any pressure at all to keep up, as this is where accidents happen.

Usually leaders will run their groups, if they are dropping off, you slow down to bunch them up. At the stops, you can reflect and adjust your communications accordingly. For example, last ride, my first learner was worried about being so close behind (wasn't close), so he hung back, I kept slowing to bunch them...

Instructors can offer their advice at the stops as well.

Because the enrolled list never matches what happens on the day, we'll have to do groups on the day.

Ok, roads looking as well as can be expected.. bit of gravel here and there but clearly signposted and ride leaders will be advised in the morning (cos I don't know the names of any of these damn roads!!).

I'll be heading over to Westgate from Eastridge (up behind Mission Bay) so anyone out this way who wants to convoy over, give me a shout and we'll meet around 9:45 for a 10:00 take-off... be advised - will have learner in tow so 70-80kph over there on the NW.

See ya tomorrow.

If we don't have enough, have to run bigger groups, newbies don't get as much help etc.

If we have more, we can run smaller groups, offer more advice...

but come one, come all, if'n you wanting advice on your riding, this is the place to get it :ride:

was a mint ride... approx 47 bikes (i dont know who counted so not sure how exact that is)

had a good toodle on the way up, its nice to take it easy and know that the guy behind you is appreciative of what your doing. Even though it's not impressive to many people on this site, some of the newbies probably thought we were crazy bastards. I can tell you that the guy i was looking after improved a fair bit, now its just getting the KM's under the belt on the open ride coz he's mostly a commuter.

As said, i took it easyish on the way up cruising at 105kmh on the straights, shit i got passed by a cage (a first) and a fucking scooter (also a first).

Gotta say though that texmo's 180 scooter is a good little hoot, definately looked like tristan was having a good whirl on it.

Left early for the ride home as my pillion had to be home earlier than planned. Had a good little blat, catching up to a few that left early (cbr600rr with cool helmet, not sure if that was boomer or not) and eventually macktheknife who played chase after i passed him, but we werent going *that* fast :shifty:

So yeah, overall i had a wicked time, hope the newbies enjoyed it as much as i did... good to see the usual faces, and talk shit - as per usual, so all in all i suppose you could say it was a typical KB group ride :headbang:

Ixion

,,,, so all in all i suppose you could say it was a typical KB group ride,,,

Not quite. Noone crashed. And as far as I am aware , all L platers safely back again. And much smoother riding on the way back than the way up. Well done.

And, by and large all legal too (apart from a few learners without L platers, and a little tolerance on speed limits, but all sensible).

Only one prick in a cage got impatient as far as I know, stormed past me (I was riding shotgun in far right of lane) in the gravel on the opposite side verge, pushed into the group and stuck 2 foot behind an L plate. But, only for a few minutes , then he went off and didn't try it again. Otherwise, thanks to some very patient cagers, and apologies to the not quite so patient SUV that hovered behind on the run back into Kaucop.

And thanks to Gremlin, Weasel for organising it, and to the instructors, leader and pointers for their efforts and wise advice.

Everyone made it back safely to Westgate Shell.

It was a nice ride for me, I had a lovely blast up SH16 from Silverdale catching up with you guys at the Pub. The only hazard I encounted was a juicy squashed possum in the middle of a fast corner.

Otherwise, as Ixion mentioned, the cagers were really good today and I had no problem passing, even on the hills.

Rode up there from the deep Sth in company with Blairos (his first ride on the Motorway as well) who was very much a newbie only having a total of about 200Kays under his belt (ever) and when I rode back Sth behind him after a good days riding, that was devoted to his kind, he certainly was a more confident and skilled rider to follow so whoever did the job on him Cheers you have put him on the right track.. Rode in a group with 4 others and sorry I am bloody hopeless with names so (1) 250 Bandit (had es hair on the outside of es lid) (2) Honda VT 250 ? (sounds like something to do with elvis or similar) (3) 1200 bandit (dark green one) (4) Doug (been around for a while I reckon), thanks for your company nice riding with Yall. Bloody awesome ride with a bunch of top blokes & chicks absolutely no hiccups at all in quite varied weather & road conditions. Once again I really enjoyed meeting new and old faces..

What an awesome day - thanks to Gremlin and Weasel for the organisation, and all who turned up for the event.

As it was my first KB ride out as a newbie today, and I had a blast!

as one of the "70 k'ers", my thanks go out to our leader (sorry mate, forgot who you were) and M1CRO - your experience and knowledge transfer was great.

As terbang pointed out in an earlier post, I had around 380K total on my new bike prior to today, and at the close of proceedings once I got home, this clocked over at 600+ - including my de-flowering as a motorway virgin (dont worry, it didnt hurt :chase: - that 1st service for the bike is only a few days away if this keeps up :2thumbsup

It was quite amazing to look in my mirror on the way back - got stuck behind a maggot (campervan) to see the stream of bikes behind me - pretty damned awesome...

Look forward to the next KB Day out!

Thanks guys... me and Gremlin just put the ride together, sort a route and a time... it's the experienced guys who give up their time to look after and coach the newer riders who deserve the credit for a great ride.

I'm crap with names so no doubt I've missed more than a few...

Terbang
M1CRO
SpankMe
Gareth_d
Robnz
Leong
Ixion

erm... and I know there's more, these are the guys who deserve the credit, apologies if I've forgotten your name already... :p

Rode in a group with 4 others and sorry I am bloody hopeless with names so (1) 250 Bandit (had es hair on the outside of es lid)
That clown would be me Bruce - Phurrball aka Ross.

(2) Honda VT 250 ? (sounds like something to do with elvis or similar) (3) 1200 bandit (dark green one) (4) Doug (been around for a while I reckon), thanks for your company nice riding with Yall. Bloody awesome ride with a bunch of top blokes & chicks absolutely no hiccups at all in quite varied weather & road conditions. Once again I really enjoyed meeting new and old faces..
And Much Much Much Kudos to (Mr) Weasel and Gremlin for thier efforts..Motorcycling in NZ just got better..
Selamat Terbang.. Bruce

Couldn't have put it better Bruce - it was a great group of riders. :first:

You and Doug set a good pace - warm enough to push the wee bikes a little and get some good open road riding in, but not too hot. The Baby Bandit got a good stropping keeping in touch with Doug's ZX6R and the Big Bandit on the straights (Can't help but be impressed by that big-bike roll-on:shit: ). Yourself and Doug provided sage advice that I'll be putting into practice when I've the chance to get out of all the blardy traffic! (And I will be loosing the Jeans when Kerry At Motohaus gets in some Motoline gear in my size...)

I had a fantastic time riding, yarning and meeting KBers - I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Sunday.

Again, I'd like add my thanks to Weasel, Gremlin and all the other seasoned riders who turned out to help and share their wisdom for a most excellent motorcycling experience. Extra helpings of gratitude to Terbang/Bruce and Doug for guiding our group! Thanks guys :niceone:

Big thanks to Noose and terbang for leading our group. I probably learned more in that day than any other day in riding. Also great to be meeting Phurball and TheGuyOnTheGiantBandit1200.
