View Full Version : How much dose your bike weigh?
Motu

In light of some comments on another thread I weighed a couple of my bikes today, seeing as I was working on them. The DT230 has a listed weight of 123kg,mine,with say 1/4 tank of gas, full of oil weighed in at 124kg,that's pretty damn close....stripped of lights it's 120kg.The TLR200 weighed at 87kg,the bike is stripped with no extras....the stock bike with lights and speedo is listed at 88kg...again,pretty damn close.
So how close are your bikes to the spec sheet?

Scales aren't big enough to weigh Der Uberfarter!
One day I'll run it over a truck weigh bridge-only needs to be accurate to the nearest ton!

mine is meant to be 161 dry, but we know how optimistic manufacturers can be..
I reckon with a full tank, and me on it, could be close to 280ish..?

What I'm wondering is how do you think your bike compares to the listed weight. The asumption is that the bikes are weighed completely dry,no fuel or fluids at all, bending the rules to get the listed weight as low as possible. My two bikes, one a Yamaha the other Honda, with a 10 yr age difference both weigh near as dammit to the listed weight....I always thought listed specs were bullshit,so it comes as a surprise to me to find it's true.Bugger...like,maybe the HP is correct too!

Apparently 168kg dry and it'll be the same as Sensei's wet..... so that's a 30kg difference with 18L fuel, 3.3L oil and 2.4L coolant. Disregarding the fact that oil is lighter than water, that's 23.7kgs.
Where's the extra 6.3kg come from? Tool kit will be some I'm guessing......
Sensei, did you remember to pull your lunch out from under the seat before weighing it???

'ERE !! :Oi: There's a couple of VERY respectable middleaged ladies want a word with you. ! And it's not going to be pleasant !:angry2:  :Pokey: :Pokey: :bash: :bash:
Phoebe says she finds a red line of 7500 QUITE sufficient for any RESPECTABLE bike. Anything more is a floozie for sure. And Petal (who is presently hitching up her dowager skirts prepartory to dealing you a true Buffalo wallop :bash: - you're in hot water now lad, and she's got plenty of it ) concurs, and notes that SHE sees no need for more than 6500. And will happily pull away from 1200 in top gear. Who needs gearboxes, anyway.

I got a screaming banshee,I have no idea what it revs to,where max hp and max torque are - it has no tacho and I need none,if I'm working it hard I'd never be able to look at it anyway.I just flick up and down through the gears to go faster or slower - if cops could be around I'll look at the speedo and make sure it's on 100 or so,I'd be happy to ride without one of those too.Trip metre and clock are the most used displays on my dash, oil warning light is kinda handy too.

6th February 2006, 09:16
Mines supposed to be 209 dry and 235 fully wet. Haven't managed to weigh it yet.
As for HP figures, all the Jap manufacturers quote at the crank, which like quoting dry figures with nary a drop of ANY form of liquid in the bike (including fork oi and battery fluid) is a tad dishonest. But once you take into account mechanical losses in the GB and chain etc I think most of the quoted figures are pretty honest. Car manufacurers do the same thing- look at Ford and Holden. I saw a dyno chart for the "220 KW" VT SS- it managed 165KW at the wheels...

Mine is 156kg dry and I think I read somewhere 178 wet? So its pretty damn heavy for a 250. Plus only 36 horsies to play around with. But as I have been riding for going on 6 days now thats far more than enough... and being able to beat the shit out of my mate's boy racer Silvia at the lights is frickin awesome!

Mine weighs too much but apparently it is 233kg dry, wet I have no idea but add 24 litres pterol, 4 litres of oil, and radiator full of water and I guess she would top 250kg easily.
Motu
7th February 2006, 06:38
The point of my post is that both my bikes were almost exactly the same wet weight as they are listed in the spec sheets,so they can't have been weighed dry.Maybe it's only a dirt bike thing as weight is more important so they keep a bit more honest - I was kinda wondering how it stacked up for everyone else.Seems no one cares, but are quite happy to bag the manufacturers for dishonesty anyway.

Let's see:scratch: "Roxanne's" phat arse is supposed to be 230Kg dry and there is a packrack add to her, so lets say 232Kg. Then we add 24L of petrol (which is lighter than water, water being 1Kg for every L), so make that 255Kg + nearly 4L of oil (same a petrol), so thats 259ish, and around 3L of Coolant, making ruffly 262Kg to just take her for a ride. For those who know me and have seen the "Kitchen Sinks" (backpack and tank bag jamed full) that I often put on "Roxanne", She could be near 300Kg Touring, and that is not counting Pillion or Rider.

I see your point, my bike is understated by roughly 8 % , 192 kg verse 215kg or 13 kg heaver.
I hired a K3 1000 last year which was 168 dry or 200 kg wet, that’s 32 kg heavier.
I was expecting the gxr1000 to feel a lot lighter than the 748R , but it didn't feel that much different.
Add 100kg for rider (I’m a heavy b@rstard) and gear that’s 300kg or 315kg between the two. A whole 5 % , no wonder it was hard to tell the difference between the two.
I think road going sport bike manufactures should also quote wet weights. I mean, a 32kg difference on a 168kg sports bike is just big fibs.

Never weighed the GS1100GK unladen but several times heading to or from the Brass I've wheeled it onto the ferry weighbridge - the digital readout is in an office but can be seen through the window. With a tank of gas, pillion (my daughter and shes pretty small), two peoples worth of gear and assorted bits the scales said just on 350kgs. Add me at another 85Kg and I start to see why rear tyres don't last long and cornering becomes "interesting". Interestingly acceleration and top speed didn't seem to suffer that much.

FINALLY - I've noticed someone with the same bike! And yip its HUGE for a 250 and thats what I like about her! Next to a 400 theres not alot in size diff.
Although she's a little sensitive about her weight... she will probably be similar to BBWolf's @ ~156.

The manufacturers are pretty accurate with quoted Dry weights and HP figures. With legislation the way it is, they have to be.
My GSX1400 weighs 228kgs dry and I reckon by the time the tank is full and she;s full of lubricant, I'm hitting a quarter tonne. Mind you, it feels pretty good once you are rolling and it's only at over 200kmh through sweeper, you begin to notice the bulk. Starts to take some work to change direction then.
