Who's going?? I'm definitely in this time. Booked some leave at work and have been saving my pennies (I've only been going through 1.5 dozen beers a week). All I have to do now is book a room at the motel.

WHO'S WITH ME?!?!

Best info I have is it's a first in first serve on the day. However, they usually limit it to 150 people but only every have 70-80. So chances of missing out are slim.

Gear is same as usual - full head to toe protective gear. No rips, no tears, no Draggin Jeans, full leather or Cordura and proper boots/gloves/helmet etc

Sounds good but I have custody of Daughter so need to get wife to agree as Wed - Saturday's are my days....may take Monday off too to spend with Nats to make up as I cherish my time with her.....unfortunately she is disabled and has a shorter life expectancy...

Guess I will have to decide who to sleep with now!!!

yeh, i actually got to have a go at decent pace in the end because we got mixed in the medium group, and the pace leader 'busted' opened it up a bit for some fun... me and buggy were right behind him.

Looking forward to this time as i wont be worrying about my cam chain dying on me - and i might even have had the valves done and had the bike tuned which means more power

And i will be in my leathers this time!

Come along. They have a slow group if you don't feel confident. But a track day on a new bike is the best thing you can do. It's THE best place to get to know your bike because it's a control environment and no speed restrictions.

The weathers great here and doesn't look like letting up for some time.

Lots of stuff to see even if you don't ride like the bike meeting on the back circuit with F5Dave Ivan and many other KBers

Hi all,

So I'm heading up to Manfield for the track day on Sunday, I haven't done a track day before so can someone give me a run down of things I need to be thinking about to prepare.

I figured I'd take some insulation tape up to do the head lights, but other than that...what do I need to do?

I'm also keen to have a chat to someone with a bit of experence on the track to get a heads up on things like getting out of the way of faster riders, flag colours, etc.

Dont worry about getting out of the way of faster riders... just hold your line and they will pass you in a safe and appropriate manner...

I think they only have two flags... Chequered for finish, yellow for caution...

Important tip: circulate in the same direction as the others
Apart from that, like TS said, you don't have to worry about the bikes behind you. You are not to interfere with the line of a bike IN FRONT of you i.e. anything in front of you has the right of way

I might get there myself but have to be back in Welly early so not sure if I will bother.

they will go over your bike, looking at chain health, loose bits etc so make sure its all good.
make sure your tyres are in good nic and at the correct pressure

Just a note to those who are riding from Welly:
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=25035

Slings: I have only been to one TD but this I know: they will make you tape up/remove your mirrors as well (I think) and discourage you from looking behind you as you are not to know whats going on behind. The worst thing you could do is change your line going balls-out into a corner...just chill in the slow-learners group first (you may have to) and then step up the next session or two. I plan to do this.

Hope they don't think I need a rear brake cos mine hasn't worked for a couple of months now. And there's something shiney buried in the rear tyre dammit. Still, I can fill that in with some of the shredded rubber that's on top of the swingarm so they don't see it lol

Good weather, good sized turnout, especially with KBers everywhere.
Shame a few came to grief but no serious damage to riders or bikes. looked like the track needed a good sweep first and the crumbling seal isn't regrowing on its own? Funny that. Maybe if they sprinkle some fertiliser on it. Who cares at the rate of deterioration it will be a good dirt track for the MXers.
I put a Diablo on the front last week but left the Bridgestone BT014 on the rear. I'll never run those OEM Bridgestones again. Bloody useless tyres those 014s , spun up out of turns far too easy and gave me a few of those 'special' moments. Far safer sticking to the wheelies.
Is it just me or does a track day leave you totally knackered by the time you ride home. Stuffed if I can face riding home from a day in Taupo! If I go it's going to have to be 2 nights in a motel and Monday off work. Unless I find a cozy brothel with good accommodation, in which case it's 3 nights. Ignore that last bit, the Summer ales kicking in.
Hope you all got home Ok with licences intact

So is it the Diablo or the BT014 that you're not so keen on?

My new Diablo worked a treat and the Z6 on the front held up pretty well too, it's now looking kinda cool with balled up rubber right out to the edges.

Mint day all round. When's the next one?

Congradulations to the Ruapehu MCC for putting on this event. It was a very enjoyable day. Higgins must have a dislike for Blue Gixxers and it claimed 2 today. No serious incidents and the event atmospere was very relaxed. Enjoyed a couple of beers at the end and had a ride over the track with the Wellington people (sorry about the road works I had completely forgotten about it).

Good to see you there Slingshot and pleased you got into the business. It's the BTs I'm not keen on. Break traction too easy and that doesn't inspire confidence for me.

That was an awesome day! Turned up at the track so nervous I almost smoked a whole pack of ciggies before my first lap. My first two times on the track weren't that shit hot and I came of not feeling very confident, but by the end of the day I was loving it and feeling really happy. I got my peg down for the first time and my tyres are nicely beaded round the edge! Learnt heaps and met some awesome people.

I love reading the post-match write ups on these things... especially where everyone says how much fun it was, how rooted their tyres got, how they nearly offed it, and how they're dying for the next one... while some of us decided to be nice to their wallets and stay at home, mowing lawns, grocery shopping, trimming trees, filling in holes the dog dug in the grass...

Well, I didn't have a scary moment at all. The only thing that I remember that gave me a fright was a Buell backfiring into in a corner. Serious bang right infront of me. Smacked the right peg, but that only made me laugh.

What I did have was so much fun it hurts to think it is all over.

Highlight of my day; going out last (Well, almost, I passed the two or so slowest in the pit lane to avoid that formality) of the slow group and passing everyone to get to the front before the session ended. That was pretty cool. This meant dispensing of an entire field of more powerful and often newer machinery.

Highlight of highlights; passing a newish GSXR1000 on the exit of the last corner to lead the field having come from 'last' as above. This should not be possible on my 12 year old 400cc bike. In his defence, he had some silly Roman Centurions brush on his helmet which would have slowed him down no end HA HA HA . He did seem a little upset at losing '1st' place, because he wanted it back..

Most suprising and humbling moment: Being passed in a similar manner by "A CHICK" (Apparently) on a 125 race bike on the same corner. That's pretty cool. Just proves what everyone has been trying to tell you: It is all in your head.

Most annoying: Never, not once I think, doing the first stage of the last corner properly. Always braking too early, and not carrying enough speed around the first bit to with the intention of scrubbing off speed as one closes in on the apex. But I felt like I was doing the apex right most of the time.

Coolest ride: The guy on the BMW HP2 Enduro 'giving the learn' to people on far more appropriate machinery.

Going out in the medium group was quite good, I went out at the back, probably didn't pass anyone at all, and then had the track all to myself for almost and entire session, just getting lapped by about 4 bikes on the last lap or so of the session. I think this will be strategem for learning a track in the future.

I need more trackdays.. Now.. I am hungry.. More more more mooorrreee!!!

My highlights would have been my first open road drive out to the track from Palmerston North. It was actually my first ride ever. I didnt go out on the track because I got my licence about 20 mins before riding out. Got 100% for my learners. Then the best thing for me would of been watching a Yamaha R1, a Kawasaki Ninja 636, and a Suzuki GSXR 1000 pulling wheelies for the entire length of the straights during lunch break. So thanks to everyone for putting on an awesome day. I hope to see more riders down this area soon. :wavey:

big ups to the RMC for giving us the chance to caine around the track
nice to meet a couple of kbers
my day started out at 6am, jumped outa bed
was ment to be on the road at 6...
got away at ten past
cought the group b4 turangi
freezing on the desert road! thin gloves were not up to the task
ran out of gas 2km b4 fielding, pushed it for 1km then a local farmer hooked me up a litre of fuel. THANK YOU!!!
had an absolute blast on the track
great way to come to grips with the new bike
had a couple of "moments"
all in the head tho innit
left the breaking too late (for my comfort zone anyways) at the end of main straight one time, got the heart racing!
rear spun up coming out of the first corner a couple of times
actually yelled woohoo to myself, hehe
fixed that "problem" by rolling on the throttle instead of snapping it open.....
was good fun passing my dad round the outside :-D
even if he was on a dirt bike with road tyres....
had a great time trying to keep up with a dude on a blue yamaha (i think) with blue leathers, was a race bike
he had waaay more corner speed than me and passed me round the outside a few times
yelled woohoo agian when he passed me round the sweeper, i thought i was going fast!! lol
was nice to follow and see the faster lines, could have shot past on the straights, but thats no fun now is it!
the fast group was good, less traffic and some really good riders in there
tyres are looking pretty sweet now, as im sure all of yours are
had one of mums friends videoing and taking pictures from the stands,
she has pretty shocking camera skills.... very shakey
will see what i can edit up and will post soon
gee,
i better stop ranting on now
Regards, Allan.

That clip didnt seem to work, where did you film it from? I was watching from the pit wall. Where the flag wavers are.

had an awesome day, as did my mate nick. Cheers to cowpoos for the tips throughout the day, im pretty sure i got a quite a bit faster as the day progressed, was quite happy that i could 'keep up' in the fast group at the end, managed to only get passed by two people which isnt too bad for me.

Had a hairy moment leaving the corner after the front straight at full tap in second gear. I crossed the gauge in the track which sent my front and back tyres sideways at the same time - my reaction "SHIT!!!... that was fun"

Good to see the welly crew show up, and mr bills, you shoulda seen the look on cowpoos face when he found his bike :nya:

I also had a good time.
1st session found out my lines were shit.
2nd session I sorted out my lines (mostly) and found I wasnt putting the power down early and was getting the learn from EVERYONE.
3rd session spent trying to pass a Buell X1...as soon as I did my lines went to shit (looking at track infront of bike not another bike) and came off early.
4th session was an exact repeat of sess4.
5th session. 2 laps, no-one to race (few bikes) came off early again.

Was good to meet some more KBers. Cola, Dr Hook, freakshow. Was good to catch up with a couple of Auck KBers too.

Great spirited ride home via the 'rapa with Velox, LBTW and poos (ta for the guiding Gary). A beer at poo's flash metro-sexual pub. Very nice poos...dont forget your boatshoes next time buddy. A tinted visor ride over the takas at 9pm. Was still amped when I got home.

Next time you are going out eh Mrs Kendog?

Lol, We had a good ride home too, apart from the idiot cagers on the road, taking offence at been passed! Wind was interesting, I don't normally like the wind, but managed to sit comfortably on 110kmph and not get blown off the road. I have to wonder if I would have been as happy if I'd been a pillion though, used to really hate the wind on the back!! It's just unnerving to feel the back wheel moving around so much under your bum and not being able to do anything about it!! Two weeks till my sexy Ohlins shock is in my bike!!! Bring it on! Hey, Dr Hook should have a bunch of photos too, I know I took heaps of you guys cruising about in the "slow' group.:chase:

I have to agree it was a good day, now I just need to put a few more km's on the new bike so I can pull a few more revs (bike started the day with 500kms on it) as I was getting sick of being blasted in a straight line only to have everyone practically stop in front of me for the corners.still I had fun going round the outside of everyone, next time will use a bit more than the 7000rpm I used all day, top speed all day approx 140km/h, at that speed used the brakes properly twice a lap, then i need to get some decent tyres, shit it just doesnt end.

really have to get sorted and get my camera out on the bike, woulda been a good day for it, mind you i didnt pass too many people in the medium group due to me not liking the whole racing pass thing on a track day... a lot of bikes with more power than me meant i would get them on the corners only to get passed again on the straights... wierd how it was a different story in the fast group :blip:

Heard a rumor there may not be another track day there this year :( say it ain't so as I really want to do that again!!

I checked the Track's event calendar and sweet bugger all. no Ruapehu Club days like we just had. Only a monthly Vic. Club day and they're a precious lot, usually only for members with race licences. Some Clubsport open days (car club) in Spring and they have let bikes on in the past. Doesn't look promising.

Good Pics Dr Hook - Tawa KB'rs present in every one of those.
Also Slingshot: yes I did take some times but only for rough comparison purposes and I would not want to post them with names for fear of upsetting anyone because they were probably by no means the best times for any of them. Can say though that the times ranged from 1:20 - 1:33 for three different riders & bikes. I heard that if you can do 1:30 around Manfeild you are doing OK - bearing in mind these are road bikes and it is not a race.

Brave man trying to out brake a smaller bike, even on slicks. Mind you, slicks tend to have a very tall profile, good for getting the bike on it's side and staying there. Not quite so hot for braking. Still, you must've been cooking the brakes on that one mate.

He was by far faster than Poos, me and the dude on the SV1000.
Feel sorry for him though, he was even complaining about the front end of those 750's earlier in the day.
I was going to see if i could help him out with some set up, but didnt get a chance in the end.
He wasnt off line at all, wasnt going too fast for the corner, the front wheel just tucked under. Plain and simple.

Even ask Poos and WT about the front ends on the 750's. They are SHITE!!
