Hi All,

Am planning to pick up my rental on the morning of 25-2-06 at about 8:00 AM at: 54 Barrys Point Road, Takapuna, Auckland. Soon after, I'm planning to ride down the coast and then do the Corro loop.

Anyone wanna meet up and do the ride with me? I may need some gentle nudging on my right side to keep me on the left as I've never ridden a motorcycle on the left side of the road! :thud:

Hope some of you can make it!

I haven't figured out any of my lodging yet. I was hoping to "wing it" when I got there...

I would LOVE you to show me some of the other 'nice' roads!

I'll put this event into the calendar.

so what bike have you rented and how long have you got the bike for? I think we'll be planning a fair bit of riding for you. :)

Someone from the shore should be able to guide you to AB on the southern motorway... and then we can do the long way to Coroloop from there. If you start early e.g 8am... we should be able to do the extended loop as well.

Jon,

Like I said in your other thread, we can tee up and go through Manukau to Clevedon.

Looking forward to going on the Coro with ya :niceone:

I'm renting a Bandit 600. I'm much more used to a sportier bike, but I think it will do just fine. It seems to be the right balance of fun and expense. I'll have it until the evening of March 2nd, when I have to return it in Auckland.

NhuanH, excellent, so I'll see you around 8:00 - 9:00 at the moto rental place?

Here's my rough itinerary:

Day 1 (Saturday, 25-2-06):

Auckland -> Whitford Maratai Coast Road and Clevedon Kawakawa Road to Waitakaruru -> to Coromandel -> follow SH25 all the way around to SH2 -> to Tauranga (stay overnight)

Day 2 (Sunday, 26-2-06):

Tauranga -> SH2 (buzz past Whakatane) -> start the 35 loop through the East Cape -> all the way around to Gisborne -> SH2 to Napier (stay overnight)

Day 3 (Monday, 27-2-06):

Napier -> SH2 north to SH5 -> Taupo -> SH1 south to Turangi -> SH1 south to Waiouru -> SH49 west to Tohunga Junction -> SH4 north to SH47 north to Turangi (stay overnight)

Day 4 (Tuesday, 28-2-06):

Turangi -> SH41 west to Taumarunni -> SH4 to Eight Mile Junction -> SH3 to Te Kuiti -> SH3 north to Hamilton -> SH1 north back to Auckland (stay overnight)

Day 5 (Wednesday, 1-3-06):

Auckland -> SH1 (to Bryndewyn) -> SH12 (to Ruawai, through Dargaville) -> all the way up through the Waipoua Forest (take the ferry crossing?) -> up to Ahipara or Kaitaia or Awanui (stay overnight)

Day 6 (Thursday, 2-3-06):

SH10 east -> Waipapa to Kerikeri (to check out the Stone Store) -> SH1 all the way down to Auckland (stay overnight, fly out the morning of the 4th)

My number while I'm in NZ will be: 021 163 6846 - if anyone needs to (or wants to) reach me.

- Thanx
- Jon

May pay to NOT do the Whitford Maratai road on Sat.... that road will be busy (too busy... possible cops too)... Recommend meet at Auto Barn and then we can take the back way out to Marinda..... and to Coromandel from there.

but up to you.... just that AutoBarn would be best if there is going to be a fair group of bikes joining you.

Excellent. See you there!

By the way, the place I'm picking up the bike from is at: 54 Barrys Point Road, Takapuna, Auckland and the phone number is 489 9242. There is a steep drive to the left of the building. If you go down to the driveway this will take you to the lower/rear of building where their door is located.

Hey Jon, welcome mate, by saying your're doing SH25, is that from Kopu towards Coromandel then onto Whitianga carry on round a bit turn off for Whangamata onto Waihi and then hit Tauranga, if so that is the best ride in NZ imo, all going to plan i'll have the gix running by then, so i'll come along.

Think Zapf said, Autobarn would be a goer for a meet spot, someone will meet you at the Barry's Point road, if no one does i will (if i come) getting things back on the road doesn't always go that smooth for me

Hi All,

I'm having an absolute blast here in NZ. Today we went jet boating in Keri Keri, saw a Maori temple, then went to Waitamo Caves and rappelled down and hiked through the glow worm caves. Unreal.

I'm going to try and extend my trip to spend more time in NZ and less in Aus.

See y'all on Saturday morning.

Again, might I suggest Shell Clevedon as the rendezvous for the beginning of the coastal loop? Just like a lot of us headed to Paeroa on the weekend.

You miss out on the nice coast if you track through the Hunuas from Papakura Autobahn, and going back to Clevedon is, well, backwards.

Like I said in the beginning Jon, I'll meet you at Barry's Point and show you to Clevedon, no problems.

im with you, i reckon via clevedon, is the best loop--- i'll be there at 10,, also for those of us that dont' want to continue on to whangamata, we can turn off and head back down to kopu, the rest can head on to whangamata, if we leave clevedon say 10.30 , and for those that want to head back before the turn off to whangamata, we should be back in auckland at approx 3 'oclock

250, yep, a little bit of power loss with a pillion but gets around alright.

First bike was a Honda Moped when I was 8 - mainly dirt bikes until I got a Suzuki A50, then rode the western backroads of Kaipra - Then a loverly GN250 that I hooned around everywhere on, then blew its top end, jumped it into a river and some local hick pulled it out and took parts - now the Hyosung, big jump in riding style.

I think I'm the only GN rider who could peg every corner.

Does that tell you enough? that is all you are getting.

being a good bassa, I took today off to re-con the Kaiaua GP section and Kopu-Hikuai. Oh, the things I'll do for you lot. It was tough work, the weather didn't help much.

In contrast to the Paeroa run last week, there are small and shallow seal repair blocks heading south on the first coastal section of the Firth (Auckland side) - y'know with the cliff on your right side, plus some small slips from the cliff.
This continues through to the hamlet of Waharau, the last village before Kaiaua heading south, just before the quarry. Nothing you can't manage if you have your eyes open (now, those are famous last words!).

The Kopu-Hikuai road had a vehicle spraying water operating, presumably to cool the tar. This surface water does not help much with motobicycles though!

For those going ex-Botany, thru Whitford-Maraetai-Clevedon, the coastal road from Maraetai through to at least Duder Regional Park (North Rd, heading back into Clevedon) is new-ish seal. Again, no dramas, just keep sharp.

End of report.

See you Jon and others at Barry's Point Rd 9-ish, and the rest at Shell Clevedon 10am. :niceone:

Will there be points at which we can stop and polish our bikes?

Probably, hopefully we can fit in a few more than usual, even if they are only short. There are some really beautiful lookouts and beaches along the way that should be adored and it gives the slow riders like me time to catch up. I'm still getting use to the concept of sportsbikes, and for once I actually get a workout when riding, no wonder most people who ride cruisers are fat.

Thanks for the ride mate, take it easy on that contraption!

Just a suggestion, if your going to do the west coast some time SH3 is a beautiful road, and Raglan is a beautiful place to stop. If you do go down SH3 be careful going through the Awakino gorge as there are the odd road works.

You'll love the roads around New Plymouth.

The pics aren't much chop. Mostly coz I took lousy shots but the tower in Pisa has got more lean than you guys going through that corner.

Sudeep wants everyone to know that MR = Merican Rider he rides on the right hand side of the road now but Sudeep you need to take corners using one-handed steering techniques to be a real Merican - John will show you how.

Twas a funny ride, can't put my finger on it but i didn't have as much fun as i thought i would, maybe my tyre problems and having to fight the i wana go sideways all the time even when cruising, sure let go easy enough, maybe 6 months off road riding took it's toll on me, honestly i've had more fun riding to work along the motorway, maybe i need to take up stunting full time, maybe i need to start racing? who knows, i threw some new rubber on today, and have learnt my lesson, of "i'll get one more ride out of that rear" (didn't even make it halfway) and had to transport the Gixxer back in style in Sudeeps van with the amount of canvas showing.
Will give a good road blast another shot and see how it goes from there, but if i can find some $$$$ to get the GSXR race prepped some may well see me out there.

Hope the rest of your trip goes well for you Jon, good to meet ya Eddy see you out there soon enough, nice riding too, sudeep damn good to ride with ya again, sorry couldn't hang with ya as you saw the rear was a little loose (xsuse the pun)(is that a pun?) need some work on your stoppies though mate.

Riding with stuffed tyres is likely to kill the fun, really...having that thought in your mind the whole time that the tyre is shagged is not going to let you cut loose and have a bit of fun.

I've been off riding for 3 months, and it took me a little while to get back in to it too. Rode from Welli back to Akl, which was not bad. Did a Coro ride by myself on the same day you guys went, and it really all came back together. Felt great getting stuck in to the throttle and feeling the rear push the bike around the corner (not sliding it, but jsut the right amount of gas). Maybe give it another go on a good tyre, with decent riders (or just by yourself), and I'm sure you'll rediscover what you've always loved about it...failing that, yeah, go race. I see myself heading in that direction some day in the not too distant future.

Yesterday, after the loop, I went to Tauranga and stayed there. Met some very drunk Kiwi chicks that wanted to party all night, but I was too exhausted to oblige. Ok, I'm a puss.

Today I went from Tauranga to Whakatane on SH 2, then to Opotiki and along the coast on SH 35 to Gisborne, then on Tiniroto Road to Wairoa, then SH 2 to near Hastings. Was a long ass day, but man was it fun. You guys have roads that make the roads in California look like kids stuff. Truly.

That was my first real KB ride after a LONG time and I loved it!!

The reason why my CBR wasn't there was because the clutch cable gave out at the last minute and I had to resort to plan B (GSXR).

Bruce, WTF? Just cuz you got smoked by a naked 6 hundy doesn't mean you have to quit road riding out of shame! Ha ha ha Na, change them tires and we'll be ready for a fair go at round 2! :motu: It's awesome to ride with you and Death again for sure. Too bad no one could take pictures of our side by side duo rolling stoppies (fuck, that was pretty cool eh?). P.S. Bro, if I had a road bike (that can stoppie) to practice on, I might have even been able to pull one for a fair few meters with your fat arse on the pillion seat!

It was good to meet the new and old faces once again!

This is what KB is all about. Fukin, having a great time out riding bikes in a fun and safe manner, being social and enjoying each other's company. :grouphug:

Just loverly inn'it, if you are still around those ways Egmont Road that comes off SH3 somewhere around Bellblock I think. That is a very sexy road, its cruisey, however if you float around 120kmph it can get close to an orgasim.

I love those roads where you constantly have corners you can glide around at 100 - 120kmph just cruising. Seems to be a lot of them around the Taranaki region.
