View Full Version : Media Perception Of Motorcycling

I have just watched the TV1 & TV3 News hoping to see anything about the Westpac Ride here in Auckland.:headbang:

Despite that fact that we had 1200+ bikes travelling from Karaka to The AUT campus on the North Shore, NOTHING WAS SHOWN ON TV.:argh:

Edit: Apparently a short item was on TV1

The Outlaws Poker Run accident was shown though (my sympathies to the riders/pillions involved.) You could almost feel the "motorcycles are dangerous" vibes in the item.

While the public is more supportive of bikes/bikers these days, it seems that the media still can't get away from Marlon Brando in "The Wild One."

i think the media were very held back in reporting the poker run. They never mentioned piss once

The Westpac Helicopter is ''there'' for everyone, thank f@*k motorcycles are there for '' it '' once a year. Dont see a 'cage drive' raising $$$$ for it or trucks for that matter.......the ride should at least get a 20 min slot on Close Up or Campbell Live or 20/20 etc.....just so the non two wheeled travellers of NZ can see just how much we bikers care/give to the rescue of all......so there. :niceone:

Just to clarify, TV1 had a great item on the Westpac ride. However, no mention at all of the Poker Run fatality, which was the lead item on TV3.

I stand corrected on the truck thing........ but my point is that the perception on bikers is as we all know its our fault and we are temporary citizens and all that shit..........:brick: its not always the case.

"What are you rebelling against idb?"

That would be old age wouldn't it young fella?

Doing dumb stuff on the road doesn't help media (and the general populations) perception. What I find strange though is the reporting of bike fatalities in that its really big news and yet with car fatalities, well, we've come to expect them and they aren't given the same coverage unless really bad. I won't say bias but more one of sensationalism.

Media or not I guess the main thing is what was being done so should we really be complaining about Media coverage.......

Media perception of motorcycling. (the topic I believe)

Someone posted a very perceptive view that we (bikers in general) have become "middle aged and reponsible"... and the boy ricers in their souped-up jappa 1200cc cages with the baked-bean-can for an exhaust, are now the "hoons" who attract all the negative media.

With the advent of the mini-bikes (even being given away at supermarkets with promotional offers...) the potential exists for the pendulum to swing back towards us as being the "baddies" once again.
With people getting a minibike tending to be in the younger age bracket for several reasons such as price, cost of running that size bike, image, and (obviously) FUN! we also get the level of maturity as well. Our collective image in the media comes from all areas of biking.

Perhaps a phonecall to John Campbell to suggest an article on the fundraising by bikers is a very sensible idea.

TV ONE coverage was failry good... they said there was a 5km long stretch of motorbikes stretching from Queen St all the way across the Harbour Bridge at one point, and they showed an aerial shot of the two northbound clip on lanes covered in bikes. Twas quite a sight... wish I was there:bye:

Two more m/c crashes down this way, one a head-on between H-D and rental car on a bend on the Catlins Coastal Route - no deaths, female pillion injured.

The other on the road to Haast touring couple on rental bike came around bend to find tourists in car either stopped or backing up - no deaths, female pillion serious injuries.

Thats the media perception of motorcycling from Riviera of the South for today.

Glad to hear that, no deaths at least, altho injuries still bad :( , better than the usual Tv reporting then.
But being curious here, why is it that the pillions always seem to come off worse? Nothing to hang on to? The accident up north was the pillion as well...
