I've got an Oxford tank bag that works fine for blasting around at the weekends, but it's slightly too small for my laptop so I can't use it for commuting. Can anyone recommend a tank bag that takes laptops safely?

Reckon the vibration alone would give a thousand IT geeks a heart attack.

Just speculating.

I have worked with laptops for 7 years now and have used various means of transporting them and as of recent involving motorbikes.

Easiest is a backpack that fits your laptop in a foam enclosure and holds it in (as well as other items you wish to carry). I binned with a clients laptop in one of them and it came out fine, so I can attest to the durability. The other way to do it is to have a normal heavily padded laptop case around your body on your back with the straps tightened under your arm and then over your shoulder/neck, it won't move around, I commonly shift projectors around work this way on the bike.

I have a laptop backpack that I'm not willing to part with (use it with my PS2 as well..), but we might have some old stock at work I can hook you up with, I'll look around.

P.s. If you want to buy new, google STM laptop bags or similar, they have been making them for years, you can view the new range yourself, prices go from $50 for an armour bag to 120~ for backpack w/ armour bag (from memory).

edit www.portables.co.nz supplies us with our protective gear at work, as well as laptops.

I use a Kathmandu backpack, been using it heavily for over 2 years now, looks new, so it is very durable. However, I haven't done any strength testing due to obvious risks.

 Didn't even think of the magnets when I've been tossing my wallet in the bottom of my tank bag.

Okay laptop in tank bag is bad idea

I have ride with a laptop pretty much every day, in a backpack, i have done well in excess of 500kms in one day with laptop on my back, And tested well in excess twice legel open road speed on a track wearing bag.

Personally i don;t like tank bags(unless they are a very small one, which is enough to carry wallet, cellphone lunch) but anything to big i think is distracting and might cause more trouble than they are worth realy on bikes.

Your other opition is seeing if you can get a ventura pack rack system for your bike and do it that way. Or look at a set of saddle bags

My Oxford tank bag has a magnetic 'sheild' in it, took it for grantyed until I removed the magnetic 'sheet' and put it back in upside down. Bloody bag didnt stick to the tank at all!

On this topic... I'm after a cheap cheap tank bag, just need it for carrying gym kit so nothing special really.

Anyone got one they're not using / don't want that wants to sell it nice and cheap.

Did I mention cheap?

i bought a backpack from some bag shop in the mall (can't remember) that has a dedicated pocket for a laptop. I've ridden heaps with it and taken it overseas etc.. no probs. Once it's on your back, I don't even notice it. And it's just another bag you can use for anything else too. The only time I use a tank bag is when I've got a lot to take/2 up and/or going a long way which isn't too often

I work with say 10,000 laptops? probably handle 200 a day mabye.

Anyway, I just use a standared backpack, although its no good for long distances as the straps dig in.

www.portables.co.nz are expensive.....

Targus has a suitable back pack... http://www.targus.com/AU/product_details.asp?sku=CZ1002

I use one of these to get around with my laptop and it has space to spare for other things. have used in winter in pouring rain and its fine.... the backpack also has reflective piping in the back and on the shoulder straps on the front.

contact me if you need one at good price.

I already have a laptop backpack (got it free from Microsoft at a show) but I find it makes me a little top heavy.

I'm kind of surprised that Oxford don't make a laptop tankbag, as they seem to make everything else!

Im thinking in theory that having a laptop on back in a crash could be a bad thing. Anything sharp and pointy in a pack when youre spinning down the road on your back could be a bad thing. This maybe what the thinking is at Oxford (they dont make packs at all eh?).
