To all the more 'experienced' mechanical types out there with a modern 21st century bike how long does a cam chain last?

I know this is a very general question but having a ball park figure is better than hazarding a guess.

The 'manual' and other documentation says to replace 'when worn'! Which translates to being that from now and every service I should check the cam chain and associated sprockets.

By the time I reach the Paeroa races on this weekend I will have clicked over the magic figure.

Um - in your case, probably about 100000 km . Plus or minus 10000 km. Ratty's was rattling badly at 90000. The BMW's done that and no sogn of trouble, but BMW is probably atypical. Of course , sensible bikes don't have the dratted things at all.

Cars can drive out of the showroom - to the wreckers yard on the same cam chain..........except Lada's.

But unfortunatly you are talking about a motorcycle, and they are made to a tighter budget. My XLV750 was a notorious cam chain eater, they were very long...I sold it at 95,000km with not a noise out of them. But I reckon 100,000 to 150,000km depending on design and maintenance would be a ball park.

The Zeal's camchain was rattling pretty badly at about 76,000km.

Just get rid of it. My RG seems to run fine without one.
