Yep it happened... I crashed my bike.... I survived... knee ligaments all torn... (laterals ligaments on both sides). Bike has some damage to it... Im on crutches... no car driving for a week.. and off the bike until it is fully fixed.. BUT i will be back riding.

So can anyone come to have a look at my baby to see what needs repairing... that would be much appreciated... PM me please.

A pedestrian at crossing... car in front hestitated and then braked suddenly... I was braking to slow down, but had to swerve to miss the car.
I caught the edge of the car and flew over the handlebars and landed on my chin.

Just a few scratches to my hands and no damage done to my clothes.. but knee farked....

Cheers..... yeah the morphine is great....

It happened around 4.30pmish today out in West Auckland..
I believe a few bikers went past..
They stopped and checked the ambulance and saw what type of bike it was.. but as they realised the ambo's were there they moved on...

Big thanks to the ambos and Waitakere hospital A&E staff ...

16th February 2006, 21:48
Bummer dude, sorry to hear, but good to see you are getting back on the bike so to speak.

Same thing happened to me down the gorge one morning when I was a bit younger. Car slammed on the brakes suddenly, I had two options, do the same thing and hope to stop short (my reactions were delayed due to daydreaming and lack of attention) or swing wide and hope to miss.

I took the latter option and fucked it up, smashed into the rear tail light and flew across two lanes, with my head a meter away from a recently stopped cage tyre. Lucky me, and you from the sounds of it.

Glad to hear that you are fine and recovering.. hope the leg heals properly..

riffer
16th February 2006, 22:04
Ouch. Completely torn or just ripped? I guess you won't really know without arthroscopy or MRI, though.

Like Sparky Bills, I've been there too. Partial tears Medial and Collateral, complete rupture of ACL, partial of PCL.

Hurts like hell, from what I recall. The hardest thing about lateral ligament damage is they make you wear a cast for a while (well they did for me) and your leg is about the size of your lower arm when it comes off.

Take the time to heal and get back to physio as quick as you can. I did the laterals first, came back to rugby after three months, but it wasn't enough time and the Cruciates took the brunt of it - I needed a full reconstruction which is a bitch to recover from and still gives me gip on left corners when I try to hang off - the knee just doesn't really like to support the weight when it's bent.

So put your feet up, forget about the bike for a few days - you've got some help at home, haven't you?

I did in the side ones.... front and back are ok..
I am wearing a brace to support the knee as I cant weightbare any weight on it... (Partial tears Medial and Collateral)

All I can say is Morphine is really fantastic stuff.....
Thats all worn off now and now feeling the knee so time to start kicking in with the painkillers and anti-inflam's...
Amazing how the brain dont tell the one good leg to move when you are on crutches... especially in the middle of the night....

No driving my car for at least a week either... so housebound for that duration...

To those that sent PM's to me... cheers.. I will be back in contact with you.

Once I know what damage is done to the bike.... then I can go from there as to whether I fix her or see what the insurance says..

A few KBers have kindly offered to pop out to see what condition my baby is in...

My leg will heal.... just needs rest.. and I wont be stupid to ride again until it is fixed up properly...

But Im missing not being able to ride already.. tis a nice fine day out there.

Oh and I will NOT be using my helmet again..... Its off to helmet heaven.

Get well soon Crashe.. Perhaps we could send House around to help sort you out.
Managed a wee off last weekend, small bruse on elbow and little bit of gravel rash on wrist as cause of the heat I hadnt zipped my leathers and they rode up my arm a little. Was in the country and no cars involved, or thankfully fence posts too. So apart from needing a new front indicator and a little TLC bike and rider ok.
Not good when cars do the unexpected infront of you and you have run out of room. They are of course all out to get us. So be careful :)

Thanks to the KBers (Markauckland, Sixpackback and Motoracer) who have already popped around to check out my bike...
It was really nice of you to do this for me... and I really appreciate all your help.

Thanks also to all the text messages from you all and also the PM's that I have received with your get well and hope you are ok messages.
Cheers guys that really does rock.

At this stage I am going to need to buy a headlight rim, left front indicator lens cover and a front mudguard.

I have to straighten up the headlight bracket, straighten up the knobs and buttons on the left hand side of the handlebar, straighten up the left hand indicator. Tighten up and reset the two side mirrors.
I also have to get rid of the wee dent that is also in my tank... Left side of the tank.

Check the handlebars are in fact still straight.

After all that is done I will take it into the bike shop to get the two broken back spokes replaced and I will also get the front wheel trued up as well.
As the front wheel is slightly out and the spokes need tweeking to get it to run true again.

So the bike didn't end up with too much damage.
Anyone wanting to help with putting all the things back into place...
all help is welcomed...

I have checked the prices for the following things:
A brand new headlight rim $112 - to come from Aussie
A brand new indicator lens cover $15 - available in NZ
A brand new front mudguard $ ????? - havent got the price for that yet.

But would be happy to find out from anyone out there if they are available second hand or at a cheaper cost.

As to me, I wont be back on the bike until the leg is better.
I am now a wonderful shade of purple on some parts of me.
Plus the body aches all over...

If I can get the bike all back together soon.. then maybe I could be back on the bike within a couple of weeks, but only once my GP gives me the all clear to ride again.

I am getting a visit from the police tomorrow (sunday) night re the accident.
Seems the car driver is changing her statement already as to what happened...

skidMark
18th February 2006, 23:51

one more picture of my hand from a side view..
the hand was bruised as hell and is still swollen.

All I can say is that I got off very lightly after my crash....
Tis hard to pick up things with both hands as the thumbs are not working properly.
Have to use two hands to hold a drink.
I cant make a fist yet as the fingers are swollen as well.
Left leg hurts like fark at the moment...
Hopefully be not using the crutches by the end of this week...
and leg brace off soon...

Resting the left leg all the time...
Damn hard to get in and out of cars with a brace on the leg and crutches...

The police rung me Saturday arvo to say that they would ring me Sunday arvo to come and see me Sunday night to take my statement....

At 8pm on Sunday night, I rung the copshop as to enquire as to when they were coming...
The receptionst put me throu to the "Muster room" as the person was in there. Well it turned out that wasnt the cop that was at the scene nor had she rung me the night before. She took all my details and the accident report number. Came back and told me the names of the two police officers at the accident scene were. (they arrived as I was heading off in the ambulance so I never saw them) This police officer said that she would contact them and have them ring me back in 10 minutes....

Well I am still waiting for them to ring me back. Today is now Tuesday.

Monday morning I had the other persons insurance company ring me at 9am, wanting all my insurance details.. like WTF........
No way was I handing over my details ..... as I want it all sorted out with the police and their final report before anything gets done via any insurance companies.

The police were told my cell phone number at the scene by a friend of mine and told my home number was confidential.... guess what number they gave to the other person.. yup my home ph number.
The police when they rung me on Saturday night, they rang my cell ph number...

The other person has rung the police to enquire as to how I am.... according to the insurance lady.. she was informed by the police that I am fit and well and that I am totally fine....... and like they know this cos they have seen me in person... NOT. gee I am getting around on crutches... I landed on the top of my head and then bounced my chin twice..... and it flaming hurts to move at times...
But according to the police I am totally ok...

Oh well I suppose if you are alive then you are ok...

Further to my injuries...........

I went for my one week re-check up at the doctors yesterday.
Due to my thumbs and hands hurting like hell...
I was sent for some xrays on them. (Phew, they are not broken)

But my GP and hospital dr both rechecked my left leg....
I have fluid (effusion) on the knee and I am going to be seeing a knee specialist next week....
So I am still gonna be hobbling around on crutches for a while longer.
Which means no riding either til its better... DAMN and buggeration.

Oh and still no word from the police.....

Not much there that can't be fixed with judicious use of the BLOODY BIG HAMMER (The bike I mean, not your knee-). If you are lucky that tank dent, being where it is , you might be able to pop it out with a bit of wood down the filler hole. Though of course if it's insured, no point.

Hey crashe - what's your insurance co saying?

Mate Im STILL waiting to hear from the police....
They haven't been back in touch with me since last Saturday's ph call to me to say that they would ph me and arrange to come and see me last Sunday night, and that they would come to my place and take my statement ...

So Im still waiting on them to get their sweet tushes around to my place.

Yes I rung them last Sunday night.. see my post on what happened.

So until I hear from the police.... its a waiting game for me...

I would rather fix the bike without having to go throu the insurance company... etc etc re costs etc...
Thats if its cheaper.. and depending on the final outcome of the police findings...

Well I gave up and rung the police back again this morning...
They said go ahead with the repairs on the bike since I have pics of the damage.

Apparently the police at the scene did have a quick look at the bike.

It took them a while to find the info out about the accident.....
as the file was ummmm kinda lost...

So the Senior Sarg..... that I finally spoke to today is gonna email the two police officers and get them to get in touch with me... since it has been now 10 days since the accident....

so I shall again continue to wait patiently.......

It wasnt me that went to the cops.... the other party did... after the police arrived at the scene.

They rung me last saturday to come and get my statement.
in which I am still waiting for...
Why should I have to wait and wait having this hanging over my head.

Personally I didnt want the cops involved... but cos they said that they were coming around..... I was only following it up...

Motoracer (Sudeep) is a wonderful dude.

He has just been around and pulled the headlight off and the damaged bracket... (which is so munted and needs to be replaced - bracket)
He has restraightened up my indicator bracket and now it no longer hits the air box.
He re-staighted up the left hand things and the LH mirror...
The right hand one is still a bit scewwiff... due to the handlebars...

He has taken and gonna plastic weld my front mudguard back together for me as well.

The headlight Rim is totally munted as well........

So in time I will be replacing the handlebars - maybe have them a tad higher.

So a big thanks to Motoracer for his great help and helping me out...
It is so much appreciated...

Phew I'm so glad about that.:sweatdrop

But I was sent off by my knee specialist, to go to a Orthotic clinic and get a (ROM) knee brace out in Penrose. (all on ACC)
Which means that I can now start to bend my knee a little bit at a time...
so that means another two weeks at least off my bike or driving my car.

I have to go back to see the knee specialist in two weeks time.

This knee brace is so much lighter and cooler to wear than the other knee brace.

But as I arrived at White cross for my appointment and hobbling throu their carpark on crutches.. who should be hanging out the window, yelling at me... yep it could only be the one and only Scorpygirl ...

I called into Henderson motorcycles today to get the prices of the new parts.
They managed to get the headlight bracket back into shape for me...

Cheers guys for that... much appreciated.

To replace the headlight Rim is $112
To replace the Handlebars is $120
To replace the indicator light cover $15

To have replaced the headlight bracket was gonna cost me $42.15.

I will put what I need in Online trading... in case anyone in other areas out of Auckland can check out their local wreckers for me...

I did out of curiosity find out the cost of a new mudguard... $336 new... OUCH.

Yep I am still house bound till I see the knee specialist again on the 15th March.

Most of the bruising has now gone...
Left thumb still has no strength as I discovered when I was using a stress ball this arvo... it was really hurting when squeezing the stress ball.
So I am gonna have to work on that.
Right hand is doing a lot better but still a little way to go.
The knuckles on both hands ache but are so much better than they were.

I have been told by the knee specialist that I need physio on the left knee.
well thats all good and dandy... but I cant drive there..
so Im gonna ring up ACC on Monday and see if they will foot the bill for taxi's etc..

Starting to bend the knee a little bit at a time... can feel it pulling right on the knee cap... but I have to go past the point of pain to get better...

I'm getting around on the crutches really good now...

Just a pain when you are sitting somewhere and people just have to walk by and knock your leg just cos its sticking out.. like hello you can see the massive leg brace on the leg...

When I do get taken out in the car by kind folks.. I am always looking to see if I know any of the riders out there... to see if any are KBers...
and I grrrrrrrrr at myself cos I cant be out there riding... but soon... I will be back...

Update: Saw the knee specialist today. He is happy that the knee is healing nicely..

I have to continue to wear my leg brace for another 4 weeks GRRRRRRR
and continue with physio and start to rebuild up my leg strength again.

But the good news is that I dont need to rely on the crutches as much now.. only use them when going out to make sure that I dont fall over... and to hit anyone who makes fun of me being on crutches...

I am allowed to start to drive my car again... well to see how it goes...
So may try driving up and down my driveway to see how I cope..

But the real bad news is that I'm not to ride yet... BUGGAR.

So that gives me a little bit more time to get the bike fixed up again.

Latest update:

Big thanks to Motoracer (Sudeep) for his wonderful help

This dude has come over here to my home on a few occassions now and pulled off broken bits and then taken away my front mudguard and plastic welded it back together for me... and then had it resprayed metallic black for me. Motoracer also came back over to make sure that I had put everything back on correctly (phew).
On his third trip back here he has just brought the front mudguard back to me this morning and we have reassembled it back on.
Wohoo my bike is whole again.

Oopsie, we still have no idea what those two washer thingee's are meant to go on... on well nothing has rattled loose since I have ridden it...

Beers coming your way mate... you are wonderful bloke.

Thanks to markauckland for popping around to check out my bike for me not long after my accident.

Thanks also to Ixion for coming over to check out my handlebars and assertaining that it wasn't my handlebars but in fact it was one handlebar 'riser' that was bent. Cheers mate.

Thanks to View Rd Panel/paint, Henderson for whacking my headlight rim and headlight little clips back into shape for me.... they saved me heaps of dollars. Cheers to them.

Thanks to Henderson Motorcycles Ltd for whacking my headlight bracket back in to the right shape as well. Cheers Todd.
Also they sent off my wheels to get the back wheel respoked (as two broke 2 weeks prior to the accident) and 'trued' up my front wheel.
The bike feels sweet again out there on the roads.

Thanks to my daughter and my friends ,that have picked me up and driven me to the Dr's, hospital, Knee Specialist and also to physio... with out their help I would have been stranded at home.
They also took me foodshopping... well a gal has to eat....lol.

Cheers to those of you that sent me pm's etc.... they helped cheer me up.

Cheers to Scorpygirl for popping out to chat to me after I had seen my knee specialist.. even thou she does like to yell out from her work window... hehehe

As to what is happening to the police.... well they have been and taken a statement (2 weeks ago)... and now I am waiting to see what they write in their report.
I have since received a not so nice letter from the other person's insurance company.. demanding payment over 2 grands worth.... they were very politely told to cease contact with me until the police report was finalised.

As to me and my injuries. I go to physio twice a week now (was 3 times a week) and have heaps of exercises to do.
I'm not allowed to ride long distances yet etc as the knee doesnt like it...
After a couple of days back on the bike, I then spent two days with it up on the stool with a ice pack on it almost the whole time.
Lesson learnt.

But I am so pleased to be back riding again.... and as usual I will be doing it at a nana's pace.. well I am after all the queen of slow on the bikes.
