Yet again, motorbikes are specifically excluded from the only transportation question in the Dwelling form for this years Census.

Yet again, I am pissed off about this. :angry2: I have just formulated a rather polite question asking their reasoning for this exclusion, in view of the fact that both members of this household hold full motorcycle licences & own both a 4-wheeled conveyance AND a motorcycle, and all 4 vehicles are fully registered & warranted all year & all 4 vehicles are regularly used.

The only way to get motorcycle mentioned on your Census form is to ride it to work on the 7th of March so you can answer the transportation work in your personal Census form.

Again.

Just like last year.

And the year before that.

Probably because one of the project managers on the census project has a mashed face because he fell off without a helmet.

And the reply from the Census office:

"The main reason that motorbikes and scooters are not counted is a reflection of the use of the final data. "

So what's the big deal anyway Slim, why are u so passionate about the issue?

I have just formulated a rather polite question asking their reasoning for this exclusionAs I'm crap at writing can I have a copy of yours? I can't see the point they're trying to make.
EDIT see you got a reply... still doesn't make sense to me. Do they want to know how many cars are parked per house? For the purpose of... what? - street parking requirements?

7 bikes and 1 van - only the van will show up on the census if there is a storm on 7 March...

Just say you did, whether you did or not.Yeah... wasn't going to post that. :killingme

Do this year! As do kiwis , we are no longer just NZ Europeans!

Do this year! As do kiwis , we are no longer just NZ Europeans!Where? Can't see it.

I have queried Statistics NZ thus: "What is the use (and purpose) of the final data if motorbikes are excluded?"

See if anything more enlightening comes back.

My understanding (I welcome correction) is, no, officially we still do not.You will not be offered "Kiwi" or "New Zealander" as a choice. But if you INSIST on existing and tick "Other" and write in "Kiwi" or "New Zealander" they will reluctantly count you as , firstly, European, and, secondly , whatever you wrote in. Causing statisticians to bleat because the percentages will no longer add up to 100, but, as the Dept of Stats pointed out, the "spurious" Kiwi and New Zealander classifications can simply be ignored, which then makes the results the same as last time ! Which is why I so hate bureaucrats.

Do what the majority of Poms do on their census forms:
To the question: "How did you travel to work today?"
They answer: " On an egg"

Got a reply from the census people: "The main reason that motorbikes and scooters are not counted is a reflection of the use of the final data."

Sound familiar?

I have thanked them for their form letter and asked them to clarify that response.

They have replied: "Your reply has been forwarded to Stats NZ head office"

A census in which the population count will exceed 100% seems to have little value.
I think this time I'm going to put down Maori. I saw some great beach front land down the East cape and I'm feeling very Ngati Porou.

:bash:

Interesting isn't it.

Isn't the final use of the data to understand who we are enabling:
Policy formulation
Appropriate allocation of resources
etc...?

So in not knowing how many full time m/c there are (and part time too for that matter) how the hell are they ever going to know how to deal with issues like
1) Congestion relief - allowing m/c to use bus lanes
2) Filtering and splitting issues?
3) Impact of installing cheese grater (aka cheap but ok for cars) barriers

etc.

Yeah - I'm passionate about this one too. It's a personl thing. They say they are interested in me, they want to help me... then they specifically ignore me.

WTF?

And here's something else weird.....I looked at my individual census form and question 41 which asks what was the one main way you travelled to work......clearly has motorbike as an option..yet the dwelling one states DON'T count motorbikes!!!!!

makes one wonder what the Stats people actually want to know.......:weird:

Just called Stats NZ and spoke with someone there in the user needs team (sounds scary..special needs?). She advised that motorcycles have never been included in the stats and that no motorcycle group or groups made representations or submissions to be included when Stats NZ called for them last year.

So it seems if we want to be included in the census, we need to put submissions in as a group..(BRONZ, Ulysses, HOG, KB etc) when Stats call for them before the next census.

Just thought the forum readers would like to know why......not some anti motorcycle stance by Stats and Andy Knacerwacker at LTSA but maybe our own inaction? Just my thoughts anyway

Well Im still waiting for them to come back and pick up the last census form from me...

They picked it up ... then sent it back to me, telling me to fill in 22 answers...
which I had already done :whistle.. and they said they would come back in 5 days.... Now I was home the whole time waiting............... and waiting......

Well after 3 years of waiting I file'd it under "R" for you know what.

So therefore the stats are NOT correct, since they dont have mine.

Wonder what will happen this year with mine... will they accept it or not.....
probably not...

I wasnt going to spend money on a envelope and stamp to send it back to them... they didnt supply me with one when they sent it back...They pay people to come and collect them.

Why does a section of society need representatives to make it get in to stats? It doesnt make sense.

Mine has a box for motorcycles - but only if I work, which I dont - being a student.

The only problem I have with it is having to put 'other' English for ethnicity - even tho they ask me if I am english in a previous question.

I never knew NZ is part of europe. I hope european isnt meant to mean white person, because that would upset an awful lot of europeans.

I'm surprised that interest groups are not using the census to gather data. It was a prime opportunity for biker groups to get some research done.

Shit I'm still filling out the last one. Census is bullshit. They'll manipulate the data to suit their own hidden agendas. Nothing useful has ever come out of it.

And now that they use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to read the handwriting and tick boxes, I make sure I write real neat and inside the boxes:blip:

According to Census, I'm an unemployed 89 year old he bitch with 6 kids - 3 boys and 4 girls, have 2 wives and drive a tractor.

Ixion
22nd February 2006, 11:49
I'm a 17 year old maori, with 4 kids, and I smoke 4 packs of fags a day. And I don't have a car( 'Tis true!. The Pajero's not a car it's a SUV. And the Alfa would be offended at being called a car, it's a state of mind!) , though I do ride a motorcycle (the one they don't want to know about) to work. Which is odd since the other question says I'm unemployed - black economy I guess. I do have two tertiary qualifications though. Ask me stupid questions that are none of your business and see what sort of answers you get!

Someone could post a reminder in the calendar for about 4 years time....
Then we will have our submission for bikes to be included like a message in a bottle for whoever is around at the time....

I use to think the census had some merit. Future planning etc. But whenyou think of the infrastructure balls up of this country in the last few years I really have to question the value of it. Take our roads for example. Have they kept pace with population and user volumes. Not a chance. hospiatal waiting lists well they are joke unless you are dying and I see on tele tonight the Kindergarten Association can get enough kindys' built for the demand. I know you fave to fill one out by law but I think I'll be a female for one night. Just my way of telling them to stick it. Not too susre what religion I'll be this time. Currently I'm a pagan but that's so last century. Thinking of becoming a Destituryion. If that's too confusing for them it's a cross between a Rasta and Bish Tamiki's lot. Hey Mon. Jeesuzzz he d'ed farr ma sinnnns mon and I'mma smokin' da weed mon fa min'

Yep can just see all those black shirts stoned on the gospel and groovin' down Queen St. to the sound of Hoochie Coochei Man. Just love it.

hospital waiting lists well they are joke unless you are dying
Skyryder

Actually the Labour party are smart. They keep people that are dying on the hospital lists longer so when they eventually pass away the waiting list gets shorter. This is why you should never trust ANY stat coming from a government source.

More people die as a result of our third world health care and waiting lists each year than our annual road toll.

Excellent! (said in best C. Montgomery Burns voice)

Census time! Fun and merryment for the adult population!!!

We are legally bound to fill in a form, but I seem to "jump" between past and present situations in time, when answering questions. I'm sure I was born a Maori, but am now a European, ride a pogo stick to work, where I am a safety supervisor at Springfield nuclear power plant.

I like census time!!!!!!!!!!:bleh:
