Those piers at Tokomaru and Tolaga Bay are amazing. I think that the Tolaga Bay one was the largest in the southern hemisphere until some of those coal loading terminals got built in Queensland over the past 10 or so years (Dalrymple Bay http://www.infolink.com.au/articles/a9/0c017ba9.asp). The East Coast's piers are an amazing engineering feat. Shame though about the quality of the concrete they were made from -- I suspect that all of the concrete would have been hand-mixed and that cement was a scarce commodity. Both piers will probably only last another 20-odd years, due to the concrete cancer they are afflicted with.

Great pix, BTW...

True Hitcher. It'll be a shame to lose them.
But I don't understand the mentality that closed the Tolaga Wharf over summer though.

Tolaga Bay Wharf is slowly being fixed as it is historic, and I'm pretty sure that it's closed due to the fact it is to dangerous to walk on.
