View Full Version : 400mph Dodge Tomahawk

<img src="/images/dodge_tomahawk_00.jpg" align="right">The Viper-powered Dodge Tomahawk concept vehicle shatters all the barriers of conventional thinking about personal transportation. This four-wheel, single-passenger vehicle is a sleek, rolling sculpture that combines art-deco styling with extreme engineering.

The 500-horsepower Viper V-10 engine powering the dual rear wheels gives this radical vehicle a potential top speed of nearly 400 miles per hour - for anyone who wants to test it. The Tomahawk roared into public view at the North American International Auto Show.

&quot;The Dodge brand philosophy always challenges us to grab life by the horns,&quot; said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Design, Chrysler Group. &quot;In the case of Tomahawk, grabbing and holding onto anything for dear life is a necessity. It's just that extreme and passionate; a glimpse into the soul and commitment of true enthusiasts.&quot;

Initial reaction to the concept vehicle typically comes in two words: &quot;Wow&quot; and &quot;why.&quot;

The &quot;wow&quot; is easy to understand from Dodge, the brand that continues to drive its foot to the floor - most recently with the all-new 2003 Viper, Heavy Duty and Light Duty Rams and an SRT lineup dedicated to engineering the most powerful production vehicles in their segments.

But &quot;why&quot; would a company, famous for its innovative car and truck designs, go down this particular path?

&quot;Tomahawk is an icon of the extreme thinking for a brand that is known not only for the legendary Viper and Ram, but also for all new, innovative vehicles such as the Magnum SRT-8 and Durango concepts,&quot; said Creed.

That extreme thinking produced a machine in the true tradition of power-junkie passion, powered by a 505 cu. in., 8300 cc aluminum Viper V-10 engine.

&quot;This is a bold faced slap against mediocrity,&quot; Creed said. &quot;Tomahawk is a scintillating example of what creative minds can do when given the opportunity to run free. It is a pure mechanical sculpture and a joyous celebration of the artistry and emotion of design.&quot;

The Dodge Tomahawk is a Chrysler Group design concept that is as much a Viper-powered work of art as it is a whole new type of vehicle invention. It is both a sculpture that can be ridden, as well as a bold statement about the Chrysler Group's enthusiast culture and passion for design.

&quot;Tomahawk moves design concept introductions and the concept car game to a whole new level - as only Dodge and the Chrysler Group can,&quot; said Creed.

Just saw a picture of this thing on Top Gear. Someone took a Dodge Viper V-10 engine and put it in a motorbike. That's an 8.3 litre engine on two wheels (although it looks more like four), which gives 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of over 300 mph. God only knows how much they're going to charge for it:

Personally I think it looks like Judge Dredd's Lawmaster bike (not the crappy one from the film), or possible even the Lightcycle from Tron, but then I'm a sad bastard. :niceone:

So, who's going to be the first to import one?

Reading back a few posts, you could have given it to wkid. He was gonna pull a 20mph wheelie on it.

Perhaps with a bike with four wheels he would have felt a bit safer :msn-wink:

How the hell do you hold on to a bike at 400mph?? I guess that they staple your hands to the grips, feet to the pegs, velcro your leathers to the seat, and fit a steel rod down your back to hold your head steady.

And what sort of wind noise do you get at that speed.

Minor points I know, but it would make getting kitted up to pop down to the shops interesting. For that matter what sort of inside leg measurement to straddle the thing?

Hey Guys, Im sorry if this has been posted before. I have done a search and came up with nothing so tell me what you think of this.

The Tomahawk is a Viper V-10 based motorcycle, a 500 horsepower engine with four wheels beneath it. The engine breathes through twin throttle bodies mounted right up front. (That's what the two round things above the front tires are).

Chrysler sold nine replicas through Neiman Marcus, for up to $555,000 each. The motorcycles cannot be legally driven on public roads. A Chrysler spokesman told Reuters they were meant as rolling sculptures - but they can probably still be driven on private roads (the rolling-sculpture comment may be designed to avoid legal liability).

The Tomahawk concept is an awesome-sounding machine; we have not driven it, as you may expect, but did see it started up and revved. Clouds of blue smoke vied for attention with the throaty rumble of the mighty V-10, and hitting the gas visibly opened the twin throttle body blades up front where the headlight would normally be. Though deeper and more rumbling than most motorcycles, it did not seem to be louder overall - just deeper and less shrill.

Rumors had the Tomahawk selling for under $200,000, most likely at a loss or breakeven price, for publicity purposes - but still fully drivable. Wolfgang Bernhard, Chrysler's first mate at introduction time, was said to be enthusiastic about that project, so much so that hundreds were projected to be built at under $200,000 each. They reportedly cost Chrysler over $100,000 to build (the work is outsourced).

The Dodge Tomahawk can reach 60 miles an hour in about 2.5 seconds, and has a theoretical top speed of nearly 400 mph. Each pair of wheels is separated by a few inches and each wheel has an independent suspension. Bernhard said four wheels were necessary to handle the power from the engine.

The Tomahawk remains on display at auto shows - though well out of reach of the general public, elevated on a special display.

400mph?? don't make me laugh!

It may be geared for 400mph, but there is no way on earth that thing would get that sort of speed. The aerodynamics would kill it. Even the bonneville guys with their big horse full faired turbo bikes are "only" around the 240mph mark i think.

How stupid do they think we are making comments like that? :spudwhat:

Rainbow Wizard
18th March 2005, 19:26
God only knows how much they're going to charge for it.
But it's really just a publicity stunt. Apparently on cornering the wheels ramp up and down on opposite sides so that the bike can actually lean over.

They said Dodge and innovative in the same article. Americans were very innovative when it came to building cars, then came the second world war.

Just so you know it's not only non-americans that think this thing is ugly. It corners like a bus and accelerates like a bat out of hell so only good for the salt flats as stated before. I don't like it but then I think if the engine is bigger than the bike then what's the point:spudwhat: and personally I would rather not be laying ontop of the engine like that, just imagine if it blew a cylynder head or somethin. The only peaple who would buy it are peaple like Sir Richard Branson and such that have so much money they can afford to buy something and never use it. As for Dodge they used to make good cars but since they stopped making the charger I havn't really botherd with them.

EDIT) oh and you can't really wheelie that thing the wheel base is too long with too much wieght, And would you really try it? Maybe if you had a death wish.

Oh and they built it to top off the market for the fastest road bike but I think a few other peaple have beaten them out. I know for a fact that Arlen Ness has built himself a bike with an the jet turbine engine out of a helicopter.

If your nephew can construct a good model of a futuristic motorcycle using pasta sauce, he is truly exceptional.
