View Full Version : The Bloody Mary Episode - Tonight 9.30 - C4

Yep they moved it forward by seven weeks! :finger:
Can someone please record it for me, as i will be unloading planes at that time :pinch:
Part of the storyline is that a statue of Mary is bleeding and is proclaimed as a miracle, then the pope comes to see it and says its just menstral blood, it then proceeds to shoot blood all over the pope.
^^^ thats what all the fuss is about, i wanna see how bad it really is or if these catholics are just in a huffy over a little sick humour.

Ive already seen it awhile ago. Its not that bad.... well no worse than any other episode that they take the piss out of religious groups etc. If people think that they're going to find it offensive then they shouldnt watch it, its not like its the only channel on TV. I for one found it very funny, but everyones sense of humour is different I guess.

South Park takes the piss out of everything: 9/11, Muslims, Aliens, School teachers etc etc etc. Now it's Mary's turn. I can understand that some people don't like it - so don't watch it if you think you might be offended. I will be watching it for sure.

A tea room discussion about this got pretty animated this morning. One of the people I work with is from a seriously Catholic family. Eyes got red and started to water. No one was being cruel - it was just the topic that got her upset.
I am glad I didn't get on to my theory that Jesus was actually the son of a Roman soldier.
While I really don't care, I was reminded that some people really do. Advise caution when discussing this face to face with people who may have a Catholic background.

If you have views that are based on illogical ideals then at some point you will get offended.
People send/tell offensive email/jokes all the time, some of these senders are likely to be catholics and the content is likely to offend another group or groups.
Hypocritical is a word that is often mentioned in the same sentence as Catholisism.
Wake up people free speech is dying.

I bet everyone who's making such a fuss about this episode hasn't even seen it. The point of the episode isn't just to ridicule the Catholic Church (there are plenty of other episodes which do this well enough) but to show that your fate is in your own hands and you can help yourself rather than placing all your faith in a higher power.
There are going to be some people feeling pretty stupid after they watch this one tonight.
I'm glad that the guy running Canwest isn't a complete pussy. Hooray for freedom of speech.

Couldn't agree more with you. Even if ideas are based on logic, most people have their "buttons".
I would like to meet someone who says they found it impossible to be offended by something. First thing I would do is visit and take a dump in their swimming pool or similar. I am sure we could find their button fairly quickly. There are loads of unspoken rules which moderate our speech and behaviour all the time - they are just invisible until someone breaks one of them.
Too philosophical now for my own good. I am getting back to work before I get the sack. THAT would offend me. :weep:

I have a catholic background , and it doesn't worry me. Hard to believe that the guy who created the Universe is going to get her tits in a tangle about a TV show. I probably won't see it, just cos when you seldom watch TV it's hard to remember to turn it on when there is something , but if I do I don't imagine it'll bother me. South Park's usually pretty funny, and I doubt it will be malicious (if it were , shrug, the faith that survived persecution by the Roman Emperors can handle South park). Like someone said, storm in a tea pot.

I dont usually watch South Park and i wont be watching this one, perhaps i'll download it sometime to see what the fuss is about.
What i find anoying is that just after all the mohammed cartoon bullshit, our self rightious media have decided to piss off another group of people just to keep the ball rolling, it wont be long before they're playing kiddy porn and telling us "if you don't like it don't watch it",
I can understand accedentaly stumbling into the mohammed thing, i dont quite think anyone saw that comming but they've apploigised and hopefully forgiven, but C4 have pushed the catholics buttons before with Pope Town, seems to me Canwest see them as soft targets? :buggerd:

The episode is more offensive to alcoholics anonymous than it is anti-catholic. Not to mention people with a Japanese accent. Personally I like the mindless puerility of south park. It gives me great comfort to know that chairman Helen doesn't get it. It is disappointing that in this country freedom isn't valued or respected. If you want to be free then you have to be prepared to put up with what other people choose to do with their freedom, including making silly cartoons.

I get Southpark, but find Invader Zim to be stupid and annoying, not cute/funny.
We each have our own sense of humour, and we are both right in our views.
I choose not to watch Invader Zim. Those who don't like South Park usually choose not to watch it too, the ratings for this episode will be disproportionately high because of the people who are watching it for the publicised content only. Ratings = $$$

Well, I watched it. Not all that funny (except for the Pope saying "a chick bleeding from her vagina is not a miracle - chicks do that all the time"). But certainly nothing that any sensible christian could object to . And , in fact, I thought it contained more practical christianity than most sermons. Some people need to get out more, me thinks. I would think the biggest complaint would come from Alcoholics Anonymous.

I used to love Southpark, and thought it was ground breaking comedy, but since the Family Guy has emerged, they have lost ground to smarter, less obviously offensive shows, that have more thought, and less blatant gratuity, and this episode just sounds like a cry for attention imo.
Catholics are a funny breed, Southpark has been a blasphemous show since day 1, portraying Jesus as living in Southpark, and having his own TV show, and swearing, and generally not being anything near the Son of God he is, but the minute their precious "Mother Mary" or the Pope are seen in a bad light, they go mental.
Personally I think this shows up major faults in the Catholic doctrine, and makes it appear cultish.

I didn't watch it but apparantly C4 only recieved 4 complaint calls about it...
Was talking to a friend of mine last night about it, and he said "Why would the religious folks be complaining about it? Surley if they are as religious as they like to make out they wouldn't be watching a program like that in the first place?"
Too true...

I did watch after all. It was a damning indictment of the victim mentality if nothing else. Typically, the very people lampooned in the show were the ones offended by it.
BTW. having seen a clip of the protesters outside TV3/C4, Christianity is not going to get recruits to a glamourous group, are they?
What a collection of freaks and rejects.

Well the media thing worked I would bet that more people watched C4 last night than any other time since it first whent to air.
Good marketing!
As for the show dont realy know what the hyp was about. It was a typical South Park episode I actualy found the fact that stans dad has a illness more interesting than the mary thing.

Hmmm.. Stayed up and watched it... Not a huge South Park fan but it sure has it's moments!
Several points story wise came to mind (no really, I do think like that)
First one was, the show was more about optining out of your responsibilities by handing it all over to a higher power, in this case it was Stans fathers drinking and his enforced membership of AA.
Secondly, the bleeding statue thing was not really gratuitous, it was an essential element in the story. Ie believing that an inanimate object could 'cure' your lack of self discipline...
Thirdly, bleeding onto the Pope was kinda funny BUT was required for the Pope to debunk the miricle and for randy to realise that he stopped drinking himself, nothing to do with the statue.
So, the story itself was quite a good parable, much like Jesus himself used in the New Testament AND I believe that if the story writers had not used iconic catholic images and had instead used Bhuddist ones (I assume they have miricle places etc) then I'm sure it would have passed our screens without a mumble!
So why has quite a good little story created a fuss? Well because the Virgin mary DID splat blood out her anus (later declared to be the vagina - a mistake most priests, even celibate ones would be hard pressed to make) all over the Pope and other assorted people! So you have 2 iconic images used to illustrate the point!
Sadly, the Catholic Church has had a history of some heavily promoted but pretty dodgy miricles / relics and some dodgy Popes as well. So I guess that they are fair game. Mary on the other hand is central to cathlocisim (sic) and probably more reverred than God. From a marketing angle, it's their point of difference so naturally they have to defend it!
However, it is my belief that the howls of protest stem more from the fact that there IS a new Pope on the throne and a pretty conservative one at that! The church took some heavy blows in recent years with lots of kiddie fiddlers turning up in the ranks and them not really acting to stop it with any real conviction (until caught out). However, perhaps they feels thats done and dusted and it's time for the Vatican to start holding the line.
As far as I can see... Look out for a few more efforts to return to the glory days! Almost makes me wish I had learnt latin.... Not.....
ps - I really enjoyed the 'Classic Album' show afterwards - Dark Side of the Moon - excellent doco, I'd buy that series on DVD!

South Park was just typical southpark. I think the Catholics are just jumping on the protest bandwagon. All religions deserve to be lampooned when they act so pompous and self important, especially Catholics and their dumb-arse pope. I thought the idea was to worship God, not some cantankerous old German Fart. How dare they try to tell me what I am permitted to watch. They should sort out kiddy fiddlers et.al. in their own ranks before getting all high and mighty. It is no wonder they are becoming more and more irrelevant in the modern world

Floyd was great and although it has almost become a bit over done! Dark Side of the Moon is always great! Bit of a shock to see them then and now but classic to see they still had the moves on the instruments! I got to say, I'd watch that anyday over South Park... Or anything else on TV...

Roman Catholicism is a 'denomination' (if you will) of Christianity. Protestants (and their break-off group Anglicans), the x-Orthodoxies (Russian-, Eastern-, Oriental-, etc), J.W.'s, Mormons, Unified Chruch, Assyrian Chruch, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal Chruch, Adventist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc... are all Christians. (bloody oath, this list goes on and on - you get the point, I'm not adding any more!).
Additional = "The last U.S. survey" (1995 Census) listed over 150 different groups identifying themselves as Christian.

High Priest:- But those other groups are wrong! To have any hope of redemption, we better burn them all.... ALL you hear me! BURN them in the purifing white hot flames of gods wrath on earth so that all the rest may be saved from sin!
Low Priest:- Um, Didn't God tell us not to commit murder?
High Priest:- Look, I'm the HIGH Priest right, God talked to me last night and said it's OK, it's NOT murder, its - um - a mercy killing right! We are actually doing them a favour before they do anything else to upset God... Trust me, you don't want to upset the almighty!!
Now, we will start with the groups that have the most land and...
Low Priest:- But didn't we object to abortions and euthenasia (sic) last year? Some of those were justified as mercy killings... And didn't God request us not to covert our neighbours possesions??
High Priest:- (sigh) Look, we need that land as collection centres, erm I mean heavenly bases to carry out Gods work OK.. God said it's OK to mercy kill 'them' and to do that we need the land and therefore its sort of our promised land OK... It's really VERY Holy and bit's of it are in the Holy Book and we learnt all about it at High Priest school so don't concern yourself with the big questions, it's a leap of faith! OK...
Low Priest:- That doesn't make any sense...
High Priest:- It makes PERFECT sense you idiot! Look, God talks to me all the time! In fact hes talking to me now and it looks like we have a change of plan! We will NOW start with the disbelievers in our OWN ranks that don't believe in our mission.... What do you think Mr low Priest....

Ie believing that an inanimate object could 'cure' your lack of self discipline...
Human nature looks for the "easy" way, self discipline is hard.
I was working so didn't see the programme don't watch it anyway. These shows that lampoon an aspect independant of the whole, while sometimes are truely funny to those to whom it is relavent or have some meaning, protrays a simplistic generalised account of that being lampooned that tends to reinforce the sterotype one commonly holds of the group or idea being lampooned.
Sometimes one does requires some outside intervention to help start on the way of self discipline. Support groups, patches or gum, a supernatural experience, faith. These things gives one the framework to be able to become self disciplined many do not require any outside help at all but some do.
Humor after all is making fun of our idiosyncrasies, differences and quirks though sometimes when a little close to home it ceases to be humor
