Hi

so got pulled up the other night they got me for a bunch of shit which i aint gonna get into but
they got me for 'noisy vehicle'
its pretty fucking loud but they reckon theres no decibel limit now? so is this one more law that relys on whether the pig has been getting laid or not lately? all these decisions which go on the cops decision are fucking bullshit and im fucked if im paying my money to support it
they reckon they heard me 'ringing' it out for a while, according to the prick officer anyway
what do you guys think/know about this?
oh, i deresticted my fizzer and took out one of the baffle pipes, theres still like 4 in there so if they want loud ill give them loud

Motu

Take all the baffles out and make it really noisey, then blast up and down Godley rd making a lot of noise to piss the Cops off. Then pretty soon we'll so many noise restrictions we'll have to put amps on our exhausts to hear them.

It's all in your hands....you control our destiny....

Don't worry about your effing valves sunshine, keep making that much noise and it will be as Motu said.

Young guys have all the self-preservation instincts of a lemming, it is people like that who 'think' they are not doing any harm and 'think' Fuck the Cops but upset the oldies - and the oldies make the rules/laws that you hate.
Welcome to the real world.

And by the way, you COULD get done for Using a Vehicle to Cause Annoyance to Any Person, cost? - $600!!!

Well worth taking the baffles out, good entertainment don't come cheap eh?

Shame that's not used more often. If the number of noisy 'boy racer' cars at the Mount in the middle of the afternoon is anything to go by, the evenings must be totally unbearable.
I'm becoming more and more anti noise, then I hear my bike. What a conundrum.

I love a noisy bike too - but it's going to get us in the shit.Play it cool and we'll have statis quo, push the boundries and the the 12 foot fences with razor wire and armed guards go up.

I'm the same, except strangely enough, I'm starting to think my bike is too loud too.
I've even been tempted lately to put the 'stealth' restrictor back in the zorst.

I am anti-noise just for noise sake which is what a lot of boy racers have on their crappy Mazda Familias. Noise from a properly tuned machine is a different story. It's like symphony under the stars......

Those cagers who I can hear coming down my street at 50,000rpm and warp speed will encounter a missile coming from my front yard soon

Ha ha, does anyone know where a reasonably law-abiding citizen might be able to purchase one of those "stinger" devices?

How about rigging up a life-size cutout of a child to spring up like those gunnery range targets and the give the b'stards a heart attack?

marty
24th February 2006, 09:29
i'm not against noise. in fact, thumping v-twin or howling inlines are the stuff of symphonies. i don't even mind a well tuned bridgeport, sweet skyline 6, or a well horned suby, but drony shite out the back of a crappy 4 cyliner rice paper fucktards excuse for a boy racer's car just pisses me off.

expanding foam works well in the neighbourhood wanky exhaust.

apparantly.

although i have heard this morning that there is someone on my ride-to-work route that doesn't hold the howl of the busa in the same regard as i do. although i wouldn't call 5000rpm (in 6th) howling. 8000rpm is more like howling, but they do live in the middle of a big s-bend....

24th February 2006, 12:21
Ah, now how do I explain my position without causing offense or inviting allegations of hypocrisy? Hmm... well here goes -

I like noisy exhausts. I've raced noisy cars. I've owned noisy non-race cars. But one of my familias had a 4 inch exhaust when I bought it. Like WTF? The first car I've ever owned that I paid money to put a smaller exhaust on it (2.5). I believe if it doesn't enhance performance then I see no point in it. So a "performance" exhaust that happens to be loud, I agree with. But a "loud" exhaust that offers no significant performance gain - wankers.

Blow off valves - they serve a purpose. But like exhausts, there's blow off valves, and then there's blow HARD valves. A "quiet" BOV can be just as effective as a noisy one. And of course, they rely on their being boost pressure to expel in the first place, so if you haven't got your foot up it, it doesn't make noise.

My bike has a beautiful factory exhaust on it. And it's staying that way as long as I own it. It's so quiet I wear ear plugs because of the wind noise, not the exhaust. Makes it factory standard to insure, makes it easier to hide (cos it's quiet when you're riding it nicely), and means my neighbours don't even notice it. And I like my neighbours. And they like me. And that's how I want it to stay thank you! The less environmental noise the better as far as I'm concerned.

I've done the obnoxious, loud is good, let's stick it to the pigs thing. I'm still keen on sticking it to 'em when I can. You can win battles with cops one on one, but you won't win the war. It's the average joe that you'll piss off. And it's those average joes who will be celebrating when the govt brings in legislation banning non-factory exhausts and imposing stupidly low noise levels, meaning that you won't legally be able to ride a performance orientated bike on the road. None of us want to see that happen, including you.

Car noise test to settle arguments
24 February 2006
By ESTHER HARWARD

A noise test to encourage police and vehicle testing stations to be braver about taking vehicles with loud exhausts off the roads will be launched in two to three months.

The Transport Ministry is setting up sound meters in six "boy racer" hotspots across the country –- including the Waikato –- to prevent legal battles with drivers over whether cars meet noise rules.

Arguments over whether a vehicle is too noisy now come down to an interpretation of a land transport rule, Vehicle Equipment 2004. This rule says a vehicle's exhaust noise must not be "noticeably or significantly" louder than manufacturers intended.

Because the rule is based on a subjective assessment, police and testing stations have been put off tackling noisy vehicles in case they are challenged in court.

Subjective assessments will continue to be carried out.

Vehicles considered too noisy can be taken to one of the six specialist testing stations for an objective test –- at a cost of up to $100.

–- The test will measure sound levels 0.5 metres from the tailpipe.

Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven said noise meters would be imported in the next few weeks and the ministry was finalising locations.

Testing stations will also be encouraged to invest in the equipment –- at a cost of between $12,000 and $14,000 –- which they would be able to recoup over time by charging for its use.

The objective noise test will be followed by a new rule setting maximum noise limits for different vehicle types under section 7.4 of the Land Transport Road User Rule 2004.

A draft would be brought out mid-year for consultation, with the law coming into effect six to 12 months after that.

Noise control lobby group Noise Off has called for a 90 decibel limit on exhausts.

They are going to push for a set level, then it's like a tyre tread depth - measure, pass or fail...simple as that.I can't wait to buy my $14,000 sound metre....if I use it once a month and charge $5 each time the money will be rolling in and I'll be able to buy a new bike with the cash I slip in my back pocket.....

Nah,it'll be.....''Gosh,that sounds a bit noisy mate,I can't make a call on that (meaning I'm too fucking scared to stick my neck out) You'll have to take it for a noise test for $60,then come back here with the test result''

I've got noisy exhausts (is there anything more beautiful than the sound of Contis on a bevel twin?) but I make a point of keeping the revs down when I'm going through a residential area.
Not everyone shares my appreciation and unless the listeners are appreciative why would I want to piss them off?

The boy racer law is a perfect example of the reaction to idiots being idiots and shitting in their own nests.
If you like noisy that's fine, just don't piss other people off, it's rude and ultimately counter-productive.

My wonderful Moto Guzzi has a noisy exhaust. 26 years of thud thud thudding away have destroyed the baffles to the point where they all fell out of the inlet pipe (I kid you not) although I had to help some of the bigger bits 'cos they were rattling about...

It's pretty loud, but not annoyingly so (or so I'm told)... However, if we were getting all measurery, it would fail a 90dB test with new stock mufflers 'cos my Mk2 was not equipped with air filters when new, has a top end rattle that scares Hondas and whines from the straight cut gear box like a fishmongers wife on P...

The Triumphs a little better... It has reproduction mufflers which are slightly quieter than stock but the duplex primary chain makes an unholy racket...

I like a nice exhaust note, always have, always will...

BUT...

I don't tear around my street like a moron at 3am, I don't start the bike in the shed (tune up time) after 9pm because the young fella next door has school the next day and I've been know to coast past horses with the throttle shut on country roads (which usually gets a very positive 'thank you')

It's about being reasonable surely.. Something the young struggle with.

On Sunday, the virgin pillion and I decided to take a stroll up through our nearest bush reserve hill thingy to let the dog show us just how unfit we really are.. We were a good 5km as the crow flies from SH1 and about 750m up vertically in the bush. SH1 could be heard as a low rustle of traffic...

What was the one vehicle you could hear EVERY time.. Yup! HD's with big pipes and no baffles, clear as anything (and trucks with engine brakes). It was worse than rotaries... (an ain't nuttin worse dan dem)

There is noise as in, thass a nicea noise and there is ear bleeding insanity that just plain pisses other people off! At 3am.... And I can understand that..

So sure... Keep up with the moronic noise making you young fellas (On HD's??)... Soon we will all be enjoying our wiffle o matics....

...

Good point that, air intake can be as loud on some bikes as the zorst. Phoebe has a REALLY loud intake noise, a sort of loud whoooming drone if I open the throttles wide at low revs, that completely drowns out the exhaust note (and that ain't quiet)

Petal, oddly, does not do it. Go figure. Of course there's not much around louder than Petal's ringa-dinga-BLOODY_BIG_DINGA-ding. A 750cc two stroke is never going to be quiet, if they bring in rules I may have to invest in some Pink Batts.

But, as Mr Paul in NZ said, I don't make a neighbourhood pest of myself with it.

Gotta admit though, when I was young, there was a certain Jawa....

I know what you mean about neighbourhood pests... I live at the bottom of a roundabout (on the side that goes up a hill) on an averagely busy street. Get a lot of dumb boy-racers going past at all times of the day, night, early morning etc, including the odd wannabe drifter. They all piss me off imensely, but whenever I hear a bike, I stop whatever I'm doing for the couple of seconds it takes to go past... MMMMMM, I love the sound of bikes

6th March 2006, 12:36
Kwaka induction noise is arguably more addictive than exhaust noise anyway... :)

One of the coolest things I've seen from a bike was a ZX12R at Ruapuna. It sat on the line (drags), lights went green, bike took off. No noise, no nothing, just a 10 second pass. It was disturbingly quick n quiet.

Noise laws aren't the end of biking, they're well able to build a quick n quiet bike. Whether you take on the law with an aftermarket or modified pipe will still be up to you though :)

Definitely can see trouble for them though... induction noise and those ghey show off valves are pretty noise too...

Being young is all about being the centre of a very small universe...flying outwards at high speed from the Big Bang.

If ya wanna make noise, and believe me I love it (drive a jet for a living), then do the noise thing in a place that isn't going to draw the bright lights of scrutiny or else we will get a heap of stupid noise legislation in this country that is going to piss us all off (Rozzers included). We are now all shaving with some of the worlds greatest Jet Aircraft because they eventually became just too noisey..
NSW EXAMPLE: Wracking up Sydneys M5 (not too far from the Airport) on me old Bandit at an exciting pace (yep I admit could have killed at that speed) and got caught fair and square (fair enough I took the risk). Whilst Rozzer is writing me out instant fine (around $400) he is casually eyeing my pipe up and asks questions about its noise levels. Luckily the pipe is standard and he is satisfied with the Suzuki part number on the side and sends me on my way with a watchful ear. A few Kays up the motorway there is a big sign (I mean a whopper) that has three words "EXCESSIVE NOISE $2000" A LOUD and clear message I reckon over something that prolly wont kill anyone is certainly a legacy to all the Boy Racers, Truckies & Bikers that have been giving it a bit of 2AM tit in residential areas that can afford the time to lobby against noise. Its the squeaky wheel that gets the oil and clearly, as the fines reflected, these poor Sydney insomniacs have done more squeaking than the families of those killed in speed related accidents. Doesn't make a lot of sense at all really but I think that if us noisey buggers here in Kiwi want to avoid such nonsense then we should at least attempt to 'make our noise in a quieter way' or at least choose an appropriate time and place (race track?). But then I guess the basic desire of one making lots of noise is to be noticed..

Don't like noisey bikes m'self. used to have the quietest Triumph 650 in the country, maybe the world. Loud pipes get very tiring on a long trip, 'tis easier just to purr along. If the note is nice, it doesn't need to be loud. Also, less likely to attract the attention of Mr Plod in the first palce.

And I would think that if one had expectations of maybe doing a runner, a real quiet bike would be an advantage. No point twisting like mad through the streets if all Mr Plod has to do to follow you is listen and drive toward the noise.

Except two strokes. They're different.

All the brand new ones are baffled to the max, after they get out the show-room.......they 'somehow' get noisy. (sometimes BEFORE they get out too)

i have heard alot of quiet baffled harleys

They sound like VW beetles with stock pipes ( shared technology i guess ):spudwave:

I saw this wanabee a few months back in the middle of the city on a sporty with ear bleedingly loud pipes ,wringing the poor Harleys neck (1800rpm???) :thud:
It sounded hideous let alone annoying lots of people, we dont need that sort of thing.

I have loud pipes on the TL but usualy always try and keep it to a dull roar in built up areas. and will hit the kill switch and coast past Horses.

And all the Harley guys , I am only joking :killingme

I find the mighty VTZ of doom is too quiet!!!!! (Standard exhaust) When I ride around the fair city of Wellyvegas, if I dont blip my throttle when riding slowly people walk out clean in front of me. No kidding this happens often and it pisses me off.

After the small fix it list my next stop will be cycleworks or neptune for a slightly louder can.

Like well tuned sound but some of those boy racer cars are just plain painful and rediculous. What possible performance gain can be had from a 2 Litre car with a 4 inch muffler????????

omg that is just so much fun :) and being an ex tl pilot i know how gutted you'd be.....

reminds me of a mate coming home to the king country from police college one friday night on his vfr800. pedalling rather quickly (he thought) along the straights south of sanson, til he got the bird from a passing tl rider - then he decided to give chase.

thought sh1 was looking a little unfamiliar until they pulled into w(h)anganui

the sound of an idling TL is way better than any harley in my books (referring to Teflon's TL, as that's the only one i've seen/heard so far)... and talking about aftermarket-exhast bikes making you almost leap off your bike, on the Hamilton ride yesterday, I think it was Warr's bike, that had almost the same affect the first time he went zooming past me... it was still getting me on the 2nd or 3rd time... although even Momentum's CBR250RR got to me once or twice... GRRR i need a bike that can beat my 105-ish top speed

How do the Harley guys get away with it?

if it comes out of the factory like that... then its legal.
same goes with anything. ie: late model legacys, darker than legal tint, but still legal because its factory.

I haven't heard one leave here on stock pipes yet. Except for my '06
Road King rental, Harley changed the ECU so you can't to a download to suit a debaffle - you have to fit a PC3. Too dear for a rental bike.
And don't the US punters moan about it!

Dont be in a rush , good to learn on the slower stuff ( My first was an AG 100 and that was just a little faster than a pushbike )

I know what you mean, and I realise that having a cheap slow bike is better for the 'probable' accidents that could happen while I'm on my learners... but something that could get to do a quarter mile in under 21.02 seconds @ 97km/h (road tests), would be nice...

Surely you could challenge the ticket in court if you pass a warrant? I thought WOF checks were about ensuring your bike (or whatever) met the legal requirements and was deemed road-worthy. (Actually I know the truth, it is just another way for the govt to make money).
