View Full Version : Akl Thurs Night Ride and Drinks 2nd March @ 6.45pm
Qkchk
23rd February 2006, 22:06
We are having a weekly Thurs night ride until daylight savings starts...........
What: A romp in the Northern Valleys
When: Thursday night after work on the 2nd March
Where: Meeting @ Shell Westgate (at the end of the North Western M/Way)
Why: Because there is more to motorcycling than just talking about it
Time: Meeting there from 6.45pm departing @ 7.15pm
Pace: Open to all groups (however this is not a race;), it is a after-work cruz)
The route will be discussed on the night. For those worried about distance/time the ride will last for approx 1hr and is 70kms long. We start at Westgate and finish up at the old Albany Pub. Even if you cant make the ride, how about joining us at the pub?
Remember this ride is WEATHER PERMITTING - I will post up in the thread if it is postponed due to weather. I will decide on the day and post after 5pm.
This ride caters for all levels of riding - so Learner/newbies are welcome!! Same goes for the fast crew.....

I can count on the people being there, now I'm at the mercy of the weather................. :sunny:
According to the long range weather forecast there are suppose to be showers early in the morning and more developing in the evening. I think it will be alright however the road may be damp in some places if we aren't lucky, so it may be a slow ride, whoo hoo!
Regardless, I think it'd be good to still meet up at the Pub.

Regardless, I think it'd be good to still meet up at the Pub.
It's happened before and there is a good chance it will happen again.... One of the first Thurs night rides ended up in a totally wet, rain logged bunch of riders who rode from Westgate, straight to the Speights bar in Albany. Lets hope it doesnt happen on thursday...... fingers crossed.
(If it is raining heavy it will be postponed till next week but if its light rain we can meet up at normal time and place, take a vote on what we wanna do - either ride like intended or just gap it to the pub.)

It happens, hey at least we found you! Thats the only downside to organising these advents. Not everyone knows where they are going and you cant spend all night trying to see who's still there and who we have lost. I can only try my best.
Hope this :sunny: sticks around for tomorrow............ c u then.

Sorry wont be able to make it - have to go check out a beautiful Teak wood dining suite that I have my eye on.
On the plus side you all wont have the World's Slowest Indian slowing you down and getting in your way.
Hate missing these rides as QKCHK does a great job organising them.
Newbies to KB and learner riders KB rides don't get any friendlier than this, I highly recommend you guys or gals give this ride a go.

See you all there in a bit.
Ride is still on! Bit windy but at least it's not wet!In Hobsonville currently the sun is out in all of it's glory and yes the wind is up a bit, felt it quite strong on my way home from work, so strong in fact that i had to *tame* my riding to suit, note: wheelies are much more dangerous when windy, might as well forget about them! Looking okay up north in the Coatsville/Riverhead direction with some white/grey cloud cover, i'll risk going 2nite!

I had a really good time 2nite, thanks for the ride Qkchk!
I just love those roads, and i guess i had the benefit of knowing them quite well 2nite, pity several others can't say the same.
Encouraging to see KB still attracting large group rides, not sure on the total count of bikes but i recall about 15-20 bikes at one stage, which was cool to see in one location at Westgate, several others met up with us along the way, Bugjuice, et al. There were a couple of incidents along the way but overall the roads & weather were mint, and the company and chat at the pub was enjoyable!
Frosty, you are a good guy when it comes to helping people, top marks!
Babybikie, you are a ladies man lol.
Sixpack, you are a good guy, so wot's wrong with you online?? p/t
SPman, hope that physio ends soon, 'becky' looked hot 2nite.

My daddy is writing this for me cos I don't know the letters propperly.
Was real cool seeing so many bikes. I wos real mad with daddy letting them all go in front of us and daddy not riding fast.
I hope that guy who crashed his bike is ok.
Daddy let me ride for awhile and that was good fun but you guys had all gone ,that made me sad.
Daddy left me with you guys and that was fun and I got to ride home on a very sad motorbike in the back of daddys van.
I had a good night

Brilliant ride with good company at the pub too, who was that young chick riding pillion? I'm sure I use to go to school with her (no really).
I would just like to rub it in, mainly to get Bruces attention, the ... HYOSUNG ... passed a ZX7R times two ... I say again, two ZX7R's. However they were probably just cruising.
You lot wait until I get a my desired 636 or something else around the 600 mark, you'll all be given the learn ... yeah keep laughing.
I hope those dudes that binned are alright, they didn't look too shit hot but that other guys ego looked bruised more than anything else.
Cheers for the ride!

yeah - i got sick of waiting for you to ring. :nya:
needed to get out of the office and the ride east to north on the tbird was all i needed.
zed bought me a coke - had a yarn and cruised home via the city. sounds like i had a better night than some.

nah, didn't know most of the roads we were doing, no way in hell I want another speed striped bike.
Good ride qkchk, most able to go their own pace without feeling they needed to keep pace.

nah - Swantiger passed me legitmately. god i wish i was a confident rider!
in saying that though, i did manage to keep it shinny side up AND have a lot of fun so i guess thats a bonus!
i was really pleasantly surprised with the organisation of the ride and how you guys all helped out the fallen rider. was good to see.
i was talking to the bronze gixxer rider for a bit at the gassy before we left and by the sounds he was quite experienced, lots of track time etc... so it will be interesting to hear what happened. it was quite sobering seeing the bloodshot eyes and the helmet after he fell off... was a good lesson, to me anyway, about how quickly it can all go wrong!
cheers quickchick. was cool!

You need a lesson or 2 mate.
some of it comes from experience and time in the saddle - but book youself in for an appropriate course and you'll ride out much more on top of it.

WARNING: LONG POST. MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS Awesome ride was really enjoying it, trying to stick with zed and qkchk up near the front. At one stage got waved through by qkchk so was up front on totally unfamiliar roads with an angry red fireblade right behind me. I came over a blind crest thinking "what are the odds of there being a really tight corner here?" Pretty fucken good actually, just barely managed to keep it on the road as zed waved and went past. This was better as he seemed to know where he was going so I just tried to match his corner speed from there on. Turned on to the riverhead-coatesville road thinking "great I know where I am" so could be a little more confident. Can't remember if that's where the accident happened, memory starts getting foggy from there. Remember coming out of a left hander winding on the power expecting the rear pilot to hook up launch me down the straight. Instead it just spins and steps right out sideways good enough to make Ivan Mauger proud. So I'm thinking I'm about to high-side into orbit, try to steer into the skid and keep a bit of power on but although I managed to keep on the bike I didn't have much say as to where it was going by then. Into the ditch at 100+. Seemed to have a surprising amount of time to think stuff like "gixxers are crap trail bikes" and, since I seemed to be riding in the ditch without crashing for quite a while (prolly 2 secs) I thought "Fuck! I'm going to make it! THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE!" Down I went like a sack of shit, back of helmet nuts road, no pain due to blessed unconsciousness. Don't remember much of the crash scene, or talking to people. An hour later was struggling to form sentences. Not surprising as the Shoei looks a bit second hand. The worlds cheapest leathers and gloves did their job admirably - no skin lost. Have a bruised bum and two very sore ankles. Goes to show you should wear proper riding boots and not defence issue combats. And a high quality bum protector.
To all the people who looked after me and my bike you are champs, a million thank yous. Frosty you are a legend for taking my bike back. Beers to you all when I see you next

good to see you back mate.. probably won't remember me either, but you didn't look too great last night..
rest easy, you'll be feeling it soon if not already.
I assume the docs gave you the all clear?
And you're right, they don't make the best trail bikes.. Did you know what caused it? There was talk of the oil dumping over the road..??

Goes to show you should wear proper riding boots and not defence issue combats. And a high quality bum protector...Great to read you're all relatively okay man. I didn't see the crash cos I was up ahead but Derek on the '86 Gixxer 7fiddy was following you and said there was heaps of smoke billowing out of your engine 'prior' to you looping it around the corner, so it sounds like you had a bad mechanical problem to start with? When he found you dude you were lying in the middle of the road, so he promptly moved you. You were fairly disorientated and kept saying that you couldn't remember a single thing at the scene. Thankfully a good samaritan stopped in his van and waved to slow down traffic, and he kindly offerred to take you and your bike back to the Albany pub, so 3 of us picked up your sad gixxer and lifted it into the back of his van between two beds! He was a cool cat and very helpful!!
Take care Tim (?) and rest up. Hope you get the bike sorted out smoothly!

Well, I didn't know that. Crikey thanks Derek for potentially saving my life. Embarrassed to say I couldn't pick you out of a lineup, but would certainly like to buy you a drink or several.
It doesn't surprise me to hear about the oil, after having plenty of grip all day I suddenly had sweet fuck all at the back. At least I'm not just an incompetent rider, I'm an incompetent rider who had a mechanical failure:) So don't buy ex race bikes put back on the road. They can be.....temperamental.

Never try to use Zed as a riding speed/effort indicator- that fella always looks as though he's asleep on the bike. He and Warr are the worst - look like they're doing 50 when they're doing 150.
