View Full Version : I need to rant

Sniper

Sorry Guys and Gals, long day so far, and even longer to go. I just need to have a rant to get things off my chest. (Mods, feel free to delete/move this thread)

Anyway, I have been stuck at work for the last 16 days. I havent had an actual day off as everyday I have had to come into work for some reason or another. Of the 16 days, 12 have been 10 hours+ days with little or no break when I get home either!!! Not only that, I have another 16 days to go before I can actually sleep in and spend a day at home rather than my desk! Even when Im at home Im constantly monitoring the systems, coming in to fix computers and dealing with SFA (Stupid fucking arseholes) who just take great pleasure if fucking up my systems. Oh yea, I only get paid 40 hours a week!

I had no power the other night cause some cage drivers took out a power box. YAY, my phone starts going off the hook cause something went wrong and the next day Im in trouble cause I refused to come down to work and restart the server at 10pm when I was at work at 5am. On top of that, I have some guy complaining that I wasn't on time to the drinks I organised for some people who are in NZ! Wow, I organised the fucken drinks, I'll turn up when I want! On top of that, they almost took MissSniper out when she had her indicator on and they cut on the inside. I won't accept any excuses or apologese mate, Im annoyed.

Im annoyed at the lack of sleep Im getting, with the work phone ringing 24 hours a day becuase Im not allowed it off and no one else will take it. Im pissed off that I can't spend more time with my darling and head out for rides on our bikes. Im pissed off at friends becuase they complain that Im never hanging out with them. Im pissed off at the fact that customers expect me to bow down when they are pissed off, and I hate the fact they demand to speak to my manager (me) when they can't get their way. I dislike the Londeners that claim CHCH is impossible to navigate. I dislike the Isrealies that fuck up most my cars. I dislike the Americans that think I owe them anything and I like the Aussies who are like harmless play things and are confused easily

Now, Im expecting some shit stirring to start, to those I say :finger: "I don't care" To those that worry, don't. Im a person on the internet, Im just words on a screen to most so I don't expect anything.

I just felt like a good rant and like I said Mods, do with it as you please.

I've had major issues sorting out my contract.. and the likes.. Took approximately 2-3 years before they acknowledged my ramblings.. though I'm still overworked and underpaid its better than I was..

I've also developed an attitude of not pushing myself so much to complete all the tasks.... I still work long hours without reimbursement.. but there's some leeway... but thats only because I started to refuse to work the longer hours and things were starting to fall apart and they noticed this. but I digress.

After hours support should be only mission critical (i.e. business will either lose money or come to a grinding halt)... You need a policy stating this. If they expect after hours support for non-critical systems.. then you need reimbursment.

Stop taking it on.. and tell management of your concerns. i.e. burn out, job statisfaction, stress, financial responsibilities etc etc

I hope you get this sorted... Talk to management. Give them options. Tell them what you are doing.

Read your contract... and then discuss with management. Sounds like you need help (same here.. but it wont happen.. thus things just get put on the back burner.. and they know why. As I've told them!) which is what you need to start doing.

Start talking to management. Perhaps agree to report to KPI's, talk about workload, perhaps try for a PFY for the extra workload that holds you up from doing your real work..

all options... Hope ya get it sorted (remember to not just take it on and bear with it.. Do something about it.. talk to management about your concerns!)

I did in my old job - mostly cause thats what I am. Experience gained on the job is far more relevant that something you read in a book. We had people apply for technicians roles with qualifications out their ears who had trouble finding the fking power switch.

Give me hands on experience and bench time any day over some muppet fresh out of college who doesnt know his ar$ehole from his elbow.

Understand ya Sniper. Whilst managing the day to day running of this business I also have the advertising to take care of on Monday and Tuesday. I have systems in place to ensure that it doesn't overflow to Wednesday, my day off. Now the owner of the company likes to stick his oar in from time to time and generally fucks things up. Not really his fault, but it doesn't work in with my system so yesterday I waited at home untill 2:30pm waiting for everything to be sorted (I can't delegate this work). Came into work today, he turned up about 10:30 and I told him in no uncertain terms that I will not accept any changes to the advertising after 10:00am Tuesday, final. He had no choice but to accept. One battle won. Now onto the next 156875.

Sniper :( :( :(

Document how many times the phone rings in the middle of the night and how much sleep you're actually getting.

Get out your contract and call the Department of Labour on 0800 20 90 20 for advice. It's free, you don't have to tell them who you are or give any specifics and they're really friendly and helpful.

Ask them what your rights are and what the best scary words are to use when you talk to your boss.

Ask what kinda grievance you'd be entitled to claim if the stress, lack of sleep and interruption to your personal life causes clinical depression!

Stress in the workplace is a big issue right now and your boss should know better!

Also with that little sleep for over two weeks straight you're putting yourself in danger every time you go driving or riding :( If work wants you to put in those hours they should be cabbing you.

In the meantime though, make sure you drink heaps of water and try to get some exercise or go for a walk or stretch cause that will help make the sleep that you do manage to get deeper and more restful.

A friend of mine keeps an ice-cream container full of water in her freezer and smashes the resulting block of ice with a hammer - the crunching sound helps her stress levels ;)

Good luck mr man, we can all relate to this on some level and we are here for you.

Ixion
2nd March 2006, 12:13
Welcome to my world !

It's not really a contract issue, the company probably doesn't officially EXPECT those hours, it's just that sometimes you HAVE to do that to keep things running.

No real answer I'm afraid, I just sort of worked out an under the table agreement with my boss "I have to come in outside OFFICIAL hours. I'm willing to do that if YOU turn a blind eye to me coming in late when things are quiet, or taking off for a few hours in the middle of the day (when things here are almost always quieter). And neither of us tell anyone official". He agreed (cos he's been there himself) and it works OK. Overall I guess I average about 45 hours a week , which I'm OK with. Some weeks more some less.

If you really have to work that NUMBER Of hours, as opposed to the SPREAD , then , yeah, time for some blunt talking. But I'm guessing it's the spread. Effectively, I'm supportiung a 24x7 operation on 8x5 hours.

Your employer has an obligation under The Health and Safety in Employment Act to monitor stress. And won't want to find themselves in an Employment Court . Do as advised - ring DOL and get some advice. And start documenting the hours, the workload ,the demands.

I work in IT, in my first job I was putting in 60 hour weeks, working most weekends and getting paid for a 40 hour week, with "time in leiu" that I never got to take.

It wasn't till I left that job and started having a normal life again did I realise how bad things had been and how much it had affected me and my family. That's when you say "why did I do it?" and more importantly "why did I let them do that to me?" I was my own worst enemy for putting up with it.

But when you are in the middle of it, just fighting fires and trying to get through the day you don't see how bad it is.

I heard later that my replacement put up with it for 2 weeks, then demanded they hire 2 more staff. Which they did !!

I generally had the same 'agreement' as mr Ixion when I was a salaryman; regardless of whether my manager agreed to it or not, but you have to make yourself valuable enough when you are needed.
I get paid by the hour only for billable work now, so when I'm idle I'm not making any money and late night call-outs and 10-12 hour days on weekends (just like the one just passed) are worth the extra $$$ from penal rates. Suits me fine, certainly doesn't work for everyone though.

Hey well done on this thread, Burn out is a VERY real possiblilty, been there not fun at all.

If you like the job , then you need to be sitting with your boss and coming to an agreement. If its just a job Start looking or asking around , and IF you do need to get a bit of paper , Stack shelves in a supermarket, or some form of physical work ( part time ) and go to the polytech
Best thing I ever did, I realy enjoyed it. ( btw Helen, the cheque is in the post )

I am ( as are others it seems ) also in the middle of a contract renewal ...My boss is trying the hard ball game, He is a bit childish and will cut off his nose dispite his face.

So within the next month I will be either unemployed or back at the coal face ( Actually I want a holiday ,,,a loooong holiday ,,,so unemployment wouldnt be so bad )
Strangly enough I was typing My cv out and even I was impressed ...( damn that not me is it ...) Qualifications , certificates iso 90 million ,,,you name it , fat lot off good those are ...

But I have had my fill of working for idiots who think they can manage ( management is a skill ,,thats why they pay ...IMHO ) you know the ones , rise from the shop floor and think that by intimidating people they are effective . I swore to myself that I would never NEVER work for a seagul manager ( love that ,,,swoops in makes a lot of noise and leaves)

So I do the thing I love best Myself ( make bike parts in the morning , race the CR in the weekends and something completely different in the evenings (teach Kids). We are thinking about expanding the bike side ,,,so another reason why unemployment would be cool, it would focus me more !!!

Anyway these are my feelings. What ever you do, there is more to life than work., especially when the balance is lost .....

I only employ/contract self-taught and experienced ............................. I won't touch 'certificate only' people.

You need to come to Auckland Sniper a lot of employers/managers think like Drunken Monkey.

Is the market in Christchurch so small that employers can get away with such behaviour or is your's an isolated case as far as you can tell??

As a youngish graduate (graduated at 21 with about 3 pretty wankable qualifications) I had a hard time getting any decent job, the moneys sorta ok if you can bullshit your way through a salary negotiation but everyone wanted experience.

See if you can talk to the IT managers at companies you want to work for not the HR/PR rep. Most of them would know exactly how you feel and for those that don't you're better off not knowing them.

Now - pull a sickie - just do it. Go to a GP if you need a cert.... just say you are feeling tired and have a bad headache which can mean anything and will easily get you a medical cert for 2 days off. Don't shave - just wake up and brush your teeth and go there all groggy...

PLEASE DON'T GO GET DRUNK/STONED LIKE THE OTHERS SAY.

Then with the rest of the day go for a ride/date with the Mrs. /get some sleepin' and lovin'/ preferably all of the above.

Next day pull another sickie and think about all the stuff in this thread and get on the phones 1st thing in the morn to some managers or specialised IT recruiters and www.seek.co.nz

If you have that Doc's cert they can do NOTHING about it and it's the truth as you ARE stressed.

BEST OF LUCK MATE I wish you success in doing whatever you have to do to sort this.

Those certificates are often meaningless. Problem is, if you DON'T have them you tend to not get past the HR department. They are impressed by certificates.

If you can actually get to the IT manager guys they usually don't give a stuff HOW you learned it, so long as you have it. And a competant IT manager will be able to tell pretty fast if you know your stuff. Easy to fake it with HR, hard to put it over a BOFH.

Sorry to hear that your stuck in a shitty situation. I was much the same when I was a deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel. Was not permitted to have days off and turn up to do shit like paint the boss's roof, even though I was only paid to do 40 hours. The boss was a real nasty prick, loosing his temper all the time. One day he lost it as usual and instead of me saying nothing, I loudly told the boss exactly what I thought of him. He quickly told me I was sacked, like I really cared. I honestly thought my career in fishing was over right there and then. I had a lawyer even offer my services for free for a personal grievance. Anyhow I got a job elsewhere doing something else and before I knew it I was getting other skippers coming up to me, after finding out where I was and offering me jobs. I worked for awhile fishing on another vessel. However that boss had a mouth on him and I eventually had a heads up with him. Although that boss still came around to get me for the next trip, I said I had something else to do. Hence the start of my retraining, which ended up with me becoming a registered nurse. Oh and if someone had have told me I was going to be a nurse 15 years ago, I would have smacked the poor bugger over. Things can change and it takes some attitude, anger and/or assertiveness my friend. I get the impression that all this could be sorted out one way or another with a good dose of assertiveness. Sometimes there is no point being the nice guy as others just shit all over you, much like what your experiencing now. Now the choice is up to you, put up or do something about it. Sounds like a Ba in IT could be the go?

Mate , sounds like your over tired (No shite) IT work can be a grind , and when bad days and unrealistic expectation are strung together you start to think it's not worth it. Hang in there mate , it will get better , get as many early nights as possible, eat well and don't drink too much at the moment.
The work hump should / will settle down , suggest to your boss that you need the weekend clear to have a break. If all else fails play DOOM until you loose it. The movie "Falling Down" in a strange way always make me feel better after a bad week or two. http://www.movieprop.com/tvandmovie/reviews/fallingdown.htm

I'd take a sickie and go bush for a few days. Take a pack, rifle and go and do what your trained for with some deer, pig, thar etc. That'll give you time to work out some options. Failing that go and lose off some rounds somewhere.
