View Full Version : Spoilt for choice?

Here in Christchurch we have five bike shops all within a stones throw of each other so it’s quite easy to see what each of them have in the way of stock. I was out shopping for a new helmet on Monday so I went around all of them to see what they had.

You’d think that would be spoilt for choice, right? Well, no, sorry wrong answer. If you don’t have a HJC head scratch two shops of your list – as that’s all they had on their shelves. One other shop had Shoei and HJC, but seeing how Shoei wasn’t quite right either scratch another shop. One shop had Nitro (no thanks) or Suomy. But with the Suomy’s there were only two on the shelves, none of them my size and no service – rule out another shop. The last shop had cheap brands – thanks but no thanks again. What a sad state of affairs.

I appreciate it costs money to have stock on shelves but you cannot sell it if you don’t have it to sell, and please offer me an alternative.

Thankfully Cycletreads offer an alternative (Shark) and I was able purchase my new helmet there. See http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=25546 for my thoughts on the Shark.

I know what you mean ZZR. I spoke to a couple of places and asked them to order one for me, but it took a while.

Yip a problem the selection for gear is around the hood.
It is even worse when they won't stock a full range of sizes. - I understand stock going to dust on the shelf blah blah - but it doesn't have to be for every colour just brand style.
But the crew at pitlane -cycletreads were great in helping me find a helmet to fit. Sharon even bought her own Shark out for me to try so I knew if it was worth ordering one. :first: They always go out off their way to help where they can.
Had my Shark for a wee while now- loving it.

Exactly the same with me ZZR.
I was up your way last week with the intention of leaving with a helmet but was disappointed with the selection.
They're an expensive purchase and you have them for a long time so I want to get it right.
I've taken to researching on the interweb and getting my local shop to find out availability, price etc of my preferred options and then I'll figure out what I'll do.

The selection in NZ does seem fairly limited though compared to what's out there overseas.
