Hi Guys,
As you probably know, the 900 Hornet has no centrestand, and the Honda one from what ive read is a pig to fit. You need to take a whole heap off to get it in. A company called MO-Tech make one which is supposed to be much easier to fit, but I cant find much detail about them ie if they are available in NZ. Tried emailing Mo-Tech with no reply. Anybody know if we can get them here? I mean a rear bike stand is ok at home to oil the chain etc, but its not much use if you go on tour eh.

Hi Guys,

Well if you are buying the bike new I would normally expect that the shop would fit it. After all they'll be making on the sale of the thing.
I don't actually have one, but then there are the fairly frequent occasions where I wish I did. There are other options like a paddock stand which may not cost as much and which will permit the same sort of maintenance jobs but not require to be hauled around with you everywhere you go.
There is at least one KBer sells stands...
(All commissions on sales gratefully received :-)

Got one on my 2003 Hornet, but was already on it when I bought it, so have no idea how much, what brand etc. Bought a paddock stand for the new Hornet from the guy on KB who makes them (sorry can't remember who it is), but they are fantastic, well made and value for money. Can't say I've missed not having a centre stand on the new Hornet while it's not in the garage!!

I can't remember exactly, but I did ask when I bought the bike.
From memory it was over $300, and I went for the fly screen (also in that region).
While there have been times I might have liked a centre stand, there has never been a time that I regretted having the fly screen.
You pays yer money and you makes yer choice..

Leave the bike a block or two away from the shop, they might not remember off-hand :)

He was quoted a grand just to replace ONE headlamp :slap:. from Wellington M/C. Theivery where his words. Now call me old fashion but prices like this does make HDs and Buell appear more appealling as longtermers...................

I checked the price of the Honda Stand today. The RRP is $501 including GST but excluding fitting. On a brighter side, the Honda Hornet we get here isnt the same as the American model, so is much easier to fit. I too remember when all bikes had centre stands, and I still think all bikes should have one. Anyway, the nice guys down at Botany Honda are working out a price for me cause Im buying a new bike.

I too remember when all bikes had centre stands, and I still think all slow bikes with no ground clearance anyway should have one.Couldn't have said it better myself! Totally agree :shifty:

My bike came with a centrestand, and I trust it more than the sidestand... is there any special technique of getting a bike onto the centrestand that I have missed, cause I'm finding it a bitch and it usually takes me 2 - 4 tries, at which stage I feel like a complete dick.

I too think all bikes should have centre stands. A paddock stand is not at all the same, it doesn't go with the bike. Paddock stand in the gargre at home is no use when you're out.
(I'd like built in rear and front wheel stands too, like we used to have. Bikes used to have 4 stands AND quick detach wheels AND hinged mudguards so you could easily get the wheel out. Bike design had degraded a lot over the years due to the undue emphasis on speed to the sacrifice of all else)
EDIT: Sorry, got carried away with the rant and forgot the question about getting the bike onto it. No special trick just technique. Stand beside the bike, push the stand down with your foot and hold it down against the ground . Put one hand under some convenient frame bit near the rear (some bikes have a built in grab handle for the task). Other hand on the near handle bar (bike usually in neutral ).Now , keep holding the stand down with your foot, at the same time use your hand on the handlebar to pull the bike backwards , and with your right hand, under the frame , pull up and maybe back. Much easier to do than describe. Main thing is to use momentum, get the bike moving back and then rock it onto the stand as you pull the rear up.
Light bike like Ratty will just roll on dead easy, I can do it one handed. BMW has very well designed roll on stand and special swivel out handle thingy (very efficient those Germans) dead easy even for a half ton of bike. Petal however is an absolute BITCH, nearly wreck my back doing it. Last time I got a WoF the guy said "Got a centre stand ?". I fibbed "Yes, but you'll have to put the bike on it, I've got a bad back" "Sure, no problem". Well it was quite amusing watching, there were three of them in the finis h grunting and swearing , one guy in centre , one pulling and lifting the rear, and another pushing from the front. I don't use the centre stand on Petal very much.

Yeah, centre stands suck till you know whats what. The bit sticking out from the side, put all your weight on it. It'll lever it right up :) Piece of cake ones you get the hang of it :)
