I have had tyres put on the bike which I am not overly comfortable with after the Coro loop last Saturday. Was wondering what you all have?

The SV650 sites tend towards BT020, Diablos or Dunlop D220. Any suggestions?

Aaaaargh, not another f@#$ing tyre thread!

Why did your SV need new tyres already??

EDIT: Diablo Corsa's stick like Tamahori to vice cops, but get chewed on the loop

What have you replaced it with??? Im not a big fan of Dunlop D220's... I would tend towards Diablo's...

Yeah another damn tyre thread cos I cant be assed sifting threw the 12,000 new posts since my PC died.

TS: I have at the moment Metzler Rennsports that have (supposedly) done one race meet. I dont ride the bike hard enough to get them hot enough and am not sure they are good for a general road bike.

Did you have any slides or slips??? As you said its been proved in many a test that race tyres dont get upto to a good operating temperature on road rides... But if you didnt have any slips or slides... they shouldnt be too bad...

Just felt a general lack of control round the tighter bends. Up 16 was fine the weekend before

M1 front & Z6 rear or a set of M3 F & R

Do you keep an eye on tyre pressures???

Now thats a good question TS. There appears to be a lot of debate about tyre pressure.

SV manual says 33 and 36. I have 32 and 36.5. Other sites I go to suggest 42 in the rear as standard.

Bear in mind the bike has been lowered. And I am not 6.2 and heavy set

What type of riding do you mostly do? I use Metzeler Z6 and do 50 / 50 commuting / sport riding. I'll occasionly scrape a knee / peg and they've never felt like they were about to really break loose. The only downside which I can think of is they tend to overheat a bit at the track. I've run sportier compounds in the past, but they seem pointless on the road as I can never use the outside 5 - 10mm.

I dont commute. So its just weekends mostly up 16 and have done 2 track days.

Try getting my knee down where possible..until MR LB and Death come racing up behond me

I would stick with what the manual says... For instance when i run the softest compound i have 33 PSI in the front tyre on the track... Try upping the front to 33 PSI... The tyres in general shouldnt move around at all... If you are riding at a sedate pace and sort of go quick every so often, thats when they will bite back...

Stick with them, and see how they go... But be confident in the tyre, dont be scared of it... Nearly all tyres will out perform the average rider...

Yes well this average rider was being chased by MR, LB, Death, Gixer (?) ohhhh and those damn Ninjas...maybe not as focused as one would be on a ride alone.

Thanks for your helpful comments.

M1 front & Z6 rear

Wot he said.

I had this combo on my SV prior to the Pilot Powers. I did find that by running the pressures 1psi lower at front and rear than recommended (I think I ran 32 at the front and 35 at the rear) felt a lot better than the standard recommendation. Didn't think such a small adjustment could make that much difference but it did.

You might find that playing with the pressures on the tyres you're currently running would be a better place to start than getting new tyres.

Mind you, I'll definitely be getting another set of pilot powers...

so race tires for you now is it :shifty: :ride:

I recommend M1 front and Z6 rear or Z6 set for you :)

I have only ever had Diablo's on mine and they were pretty good. The Diablo Corsa's are even more sticky but as mentioned don't last as long.

A BIG HUGE THANK YOU to the guys at Cycletreads for looking after me. You guys rock for service.

I now have Pirelli Stradas and they are mint. Mike and Mouldy (sp?) thanks for your help ..sorry its a belated thank you.

While down in the big smoke I visited Colemans and Haldanes to chew the fat over the suspension issues since the bike was lowered. Two different responses one could not expect. But thats for another thread.

These are the tyres that I was thinking of fitting to mine. I'm just coming to the end of the Pilot Sport front and Macadam rear which were good but wore out a bit faster than I'd anticipated. The Diablo range and also the Avon Venom seem to come quite highly recommended. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Strada is the more sport touring tyre of their range isn't it?
BTW I found the original Dunlop D220's just plain scary! The Michelins transformed the bike, for my riding style anyway.

The Dunlops I had on stock standard were pretty scary too. Thanks to Frosty we played around with some new tyres but didnt quite have it right.

The guys at cycletreads reckon that because I dont ride the bike to death (ie doing wheelies at 180kms an hour - oh no hang on thats Death) that Stradas were a better option because they get up to temperature fairly quick but will still be ok for the odd track day.

I just took my SV650S in for its 12,000km service and they told me my tyres haven't got long to go, so I'd better start saving for some new ones. The question now is, which ones to get. I've read all the posts in this thread, but I still don't know. Several people have said the stock Dunlops were scary, but I've never had a problem with them, so I'm tempted to stick with what I know and get some more. I'm definitely not a racer - probably more towards the nana end of the scale. I think I'm cornering faster as I get more confidence, but I still can't make an impression on my chicken strips (still about 10mm). I rarely scrape my toe, let alone anything else. About 50% of my riding is commuting. I'm probably in the "it doesn't matter, anything is good enough" bracket at the moment, but I do imagine (hope) I'll get a little bit better in my next 10,000km, so I need to make sure my tyres will be up to it. WMCC suggested Dunlops or Bridgestones, the latter being slightly cheaper (not that $500 + fitting sounds cheap). Any advice (preferably on tyres) welcomed. And note that I didn't start a new thread!!!

For general purpose you can't go past Metzeler Road Tec Z6, front and rear. They are a great sports tyre, and last well. SV's seem to go real well on them

*bump*

Any other suggestions? The Metzeler Z6s sound good and are in the same price range as the Dunlops and Bridgestones, so that's good, too. Someone suggested a Metzeler M3 for the front...

Word on the street is that the Z6 is popular replacement on the SV thou. I'm going for another Pilot Sport on the back, and a full set of Z6s after that. Gotta try em all I guess
