Was thinking 'nah' a week ago.

Thinking 'fuck yeah' right now.

So who is with me?

If the weather is good tomorrow, maybe a few practise runs..

Some more info to save you going into the website.

The Wairarapa boys are holding the hillclimb up the “Water Tower Hill” in the Wairarapa on the 11th/12th March.

The hillclimb is held on the Te Wharau Rd (the Kourarau hydro dam is part-way up this road). This 6.8km road climbs approx. 1000ft and has 27 corners (give or take a slight bend or two). The road surface is good with only a few bumps and ruts to challenge man (or woman) and machine. For half the distance the road clings to the side of the hill (offering good views over the Wairarapa valley). The remainder of the course cuts through the surrounding farmland in a series of fast sweeping curves.
The hillclimb is to be held on the 11th and 12th March 2006.
Fun/practice day on Saturday.....
Saturday is a fun/practice day. The aim is to encourage people to have a go, so go on...have a go. Entry fee is $30.00 for this day. You can run as many bikes as you like for this fee. See the entry form for more details.
The "King of the Cliffhanger" competition will be run on Sunday
Fastest rider up the road wins the prize.
Prize money will be paid to the two Cliffhanger classes, namely:-
Junior... up to 600cc
Senior... 601cc to open
Support classes are for any motorcycle or sidecar. So bring along your road bikes, Classics/Post classic machines and have some fun.
Rider clothing is to be either one piece leathers, leather or kevlar jackets with leather, nylon motocross or heavy worsted trousers. Boots are to be leather or leather substitute at least 25cm high or plastic motocross boots (refer to MNZ rule section 8). Helmets can be open or full face but must conform to MNZ rule 8-2. Back protectors are recommended.
As riders must remain at the finishing area until all runs are completed, it won't be possible to enter more than one class per run.
Riders will be given two familiarisation runs up the hill as a group, then two individually timed runs. The fastest 15 or 20 will go into the final run to determine the placing per class.
See the entry form for further conditions and information.
Prize giving will be held at the venue.
The nearby Gladstone Inn has camping sites available (ph (06) 372 7866).
Parking will be available in a paddock right next to the start line. We hope to be able to take spectators up the road prior to the start time of 9:30am. Spectators won't be able to get back to the start until the lunch break (12 noon to 12:25pm). The terrain beside the road is very steep in places, but people have walked a fair way up in the past. If spectators do decide to move during the event you must keep well clear of the road.
There are two places that would make good picnic spots.
The first is lake beside the dam, there's huge open spaces and trout in the lake. The view of the road is o.k, you'd see a couple of corners and can watch the bikes negotiate the ruts in the road just past the bridge.
The second spot is in a paddock towards the top, next to some cattle yards, where I think you can see a few corners. Again there is plenty of room to spread out.
Food and drink will be available at the start area (porta-loos as well).

Further details are at:

This is one event that makes me really miss NZ M/Cing (And that bloody Jim2 sending me NZ bike cam videos!). That hill climb is one of my most favorite rides in NZ. Will miss it this year, won't be back in NZ in time.

Seems to be a number of "talkers" on Kiwibiker that say how hard / fast they are , perfect opportunity here. Closed road, no speed limit as such, just own ability. Less than 4 1/2 hours ride for 1/2 the north island riders. Also an opportunity for those GSXR1000 riders to show us how superior they are to all the other bikes.

Bullshit aside , The new format looks good , those that just want to have a go can do so on Saturday ,and those that do a bit or lot of racing can go hard out on the Sunday.
Give it a go … You’ll love it.

Hmmmm - just a thought.... Do you think if they're officially closing off the road it's temporarily not considred to be a 'public road'? The Sprints seem to confirm that. That would mean you wouldn't need a drivers licence (even with cops there) apart from getting there and back. But that's easier to work out.

GSVR

Have to have a civil license its even stated in the entry form.

For good reason. That piece of road is dangerous. Lots of people ride it at a reasonably fast pace but most I know also know it's one of those roads that demand respect. So close it off and say GO FULL TIT !! yeah right. Narrow, blind, tight turns with 100m to 200m sheer drops -that's if you survive getting through the barbed wire. For me it's a definite 8/10th ride never 9/10th so not sure if I want the added temptation of 'closed road' = false security it's safer.
Still, my minds not made up until the sun rises on Saturday

I wimped out for a reason. I got scared I'd do one of the following:
Brake too late for the sharp right hander, and fly down the cliff
Forget to run wide for the first dip in the road and fly up the road
Forget to avoid the second dip and just plain crash

Mooch

Compare it to the taka's , it's a nice bit of road , did you notice the finish line well before the top , (Thin white paint across the road)
I think the only thing that really needs the big look is the gravel on the corners where a couple of side roads join, and correct braking for corner 9 so you don't loose to much time. Also focus on the road and re-learn the corners to use both lanes. Can't say I've really noticed the drop offs, barbed wire fences etc. Going down the other side is however a differrent story.

I do not know this road, however I have won a hill climb they used to have on Admirals road close by. (In 92 on a FZR1000, never got out of second gear!)
I love this sort of stuff and will be aiming for at least a top 5 finish in the open class. (hey, ya gotta have goals right?)

I think we have different approaches to racing here....
For a start, I do not do a run whilst looking for preffered places to crash!
I just try to ride not to crash in the first place....
I reckon if your looking for places to crash, you will have a higher chance of finding one through not concentrating on where you are going!

I use the sighting runs as just that, a sighting run. I use it to learn the hazards, I do these runs quite slow and pay close attention to such things as cambers, road surface changes, gravel, animal piss, dips, and the ever popular tightening radius turn! Hazards such as the ones you list are pretty easy ones to reference and remember.
Don't get me wrong, I have a real respect for roads like this, circuit type speeds are to be avoided!

Personally, I'll just be looking to have fun, hopefully set a good time, then look for the sweet wheelie spots :woohoo:

This event is on THIS WEEKEND guys!:mega:

It is so perfect for new comers to come and have a go. Saturday is a low key practice day. You don't have to set the record, ride at the level you are comfortable with and you will be sweet!

I had a look at the photos on the official website, and I do remember that road, it is fucking awesome!!!!!:ride:
The weather is supposed to be great tomorrow, no excuses, rock up and have a go....you will need a crow bar to get that grin of ya face!!!!:D

So come on, how often do you get sick of constantly looking at your speedo?
Remember, it is a public road, and these guys :Police: are not invited to the PARTY!!!!

One thing I do know is the organisers of this lost out bigtime financially. The Saturday was absolutely brillient weatherwise and only around 15 bikes entered. Sunday there where around the same and the results declared after only two timed runs because of the rain on the final part of the road.

Slopster another KBer from Palmerston North and his mate from Kapiti both on ZXR750's came 1st and 2nd in the pre 93? class.

There was a guy on an Old RD250 and an old XS650 you could turn up with anything.

Only one proper classic bike raced so he was going to come 1st in his class even if he pushed it up the hill.

Very dissapointed with the turn out. Maybe eveyone heard Deano and Jimbo would be there and didn't want to be shown up. Well thats my excuse for not riding Sunday anyway.

It was a shame that we only got 2 dry runs yesterday, but shit they were worth the $$. I got to the end of the first run after scaring myself stupid in a few places - but that's where the fun is I reckon.

Not everyone is into competing in these events, but it would be a bloody shame to lose them, which is a possibility if there is a lack of interest and support.

Come on guys - as Uncle B has said - there is enough bullshit posted in here to have expected a few more entries. The organisers even gave out a medal to a lot of the competitors, not just the top 3 in each class.

Some have mentioned how dangerous the road looked, yet I bet at least a few of you ride pretty hard on the road every weekend.

Anyway - how about some more support next year ? The organisers were also talking about a possible Featherston Sprint in the next month or so.

p.s. cheers for the 'accurate' report Poos - revenge is sweet ain't it ?

jimbo600
13th March 2006, 09:10
Damn right. Everyone (including me) moans about excessive police presence on the road, and when we are gifted an opportunity to race up a great bit of tarmac there's hardly any support. Use it or loose it folks. It's a great day all up. Big ups to Deano who had the hammer down, only a few seconds off Tony Sampsons pace. As we speak my bike is in WMC for a PX on a 1000.

Shame about the rain as I was just warming up to do a 2:11 run. Honest

Interesting...

I'd run the ancient Moto Guzzi up there for a laugh and just to make up the numbers if that would help? It would not go very fast but it would maka lotsa da noise. I'd not be going hard as hard because it's a nice old thing and I really don't want to bend it if I can help it.

Looking at the website I sort of got the impression it was all pretty professional and for fast bikes only and was a bit put off even thinking about it. Reading it again after reading this, I suppose being able to ride up in heavy worsted trousers I should have thought better.

I reckon a chat with the Classic Club would have seen a few other old nails heading up there.

Stephan Hodson (sp) won his class on an old (excuse ignorance) Triumph - shit it was in beautiful condition. Probably the best detailed bike there. It was mint.

There are at least five support classes, based on bike year. It would be great to see more bikes entering, even for the fun of blatting up a closed road. It is only as dangerous as people want it to get.

They also had a wheelie and burnout session but only got one taker on a ZX9R I think - nice burnout though.
