was that the one guy got into and the top closed by the roof sliding over? if it was, I always wanted one of those bikes... I wonder if it would have training wheels for when you have to stop (like that 530km/h bike post)

From Advert:

I am selling this bike for an old friend and he invites offers. All will be considered.
If I lived near Wanganui, I'd 'offer' to take it to the rubbish dump for him :D

I say we have a KB whip-around, everyone throws is $5, we buy the bike, a 8kg gas bottle, which gets stuck under it with a propane torch blasting onto it for a fuse.

Yep - very similar in style (?) to the Quasar.
Being built by Steve Roberts, as ugly as it is, I'll wager it is beautifully built and engineered. It probably belongs in Southward's.

What you're thinking of is the Ecomobile.

The Quasar is the other "thing"....

You are a narrow minded lot!!!,not everyone wants overstyled ,overpowered ,impractical, plastic jap crotch rockets !!!! Try opening your eyes to alternative ideas & philosophies. That bike on TardMe is a fine example of FF [feet forward] design as proposed by such luminaries as Malcolm Newell & Royce Creasy in the UK. Very comfortable , low centre of gravity, built in luggage space & good weather protection ie very practical etc. Check out their websites, very interesting & sometimes quite technical too. This is one example of the the thinking mans motorcycle !!

no, not those... it was a cartoon back in the late 80's (even came out as a little toy) it was red/black, with a whole black tinted roof thing...

It is hard to believe but is THE Steve Roberts really responsible for this ridiculous looking thing on TradeMe?? Steve Roberts built Robert Holden's bikes plus lots more innovative road racing and MX machines. The guy is a legend.

Yeah and he also built frames for the Suzuki factory to use on their TR500 racebikes in the early 70s.
So don't knock the guy - he is NOT a sheep but innovative and he had a go.

With the air filter where it is you would want to be careful with the nads. And is it pink??? Or is it the shock that makes your eyes let in too much light, and its realy red?

A forerunner to J.Britten was Steve Roberts. This NZ chap built an aluminium monococ chassis for a roadrace bike in the early 80s originally campaigned by David Hiscock in the world F1 champs in 1983 & followed it up in 83/84 with a Kevlar version dubbed the 'Plastic Fantastic'. This preceded most other (if not all other successful composite bikes).

One day you are on about how you fancy Dover and Cowpoo et al, next you are grabbing Boomer's arse, now you have a thing for the fat chick.

What next? No don't answer that I don't really need to know.

You need to get off of that keyboard and ride more!!!

A few points:
1/ It wasn't so ridiculous at the time - in the early-mid 80's there were a lot of FF bikes being built. They were essentially a timely response to the problems of living in a city like London where the weather is foul and the parking is impossible. Much like the reasoning behind BMW's C1.
2/ Yes, it is THE steve Roberts
3/ The bikes to which you refer, and the ones everyone knows SR for, were built for Dave Hiscock - Robert got them as hand-me-downs.

You are dead right - Steve Roberts is a legend. His engineering skill and workmanship are such that the FF thing should be revered for what it is, not slagged because it just doesn't fit one's ideas of what a bike should look like.

denill
9th March 2006, 06:48
And I notice that someone will pay $2000.00 for this 'CX500'. It will be interesting to see how the auction goes??

Also notice that the add says "The body is aluminium crafted by Steve Roberts."

That does not neccesarily mean SR deigned and built the machine. It could just be that SR carried out the aluminium work to someone else's specs??

hey I lived aboard a CX500 for a good few tearss in London. They are great things. I blew mine up in cheam ( no where near Railway cottage )

the front was a bit flexy ,,,and I did like the turbo ( done 2 of those ), the big fault on those was the connector from the alt to the reg rect , to small corroded and burned out

other than that great bike

Stephen

Yeah, had a couple of them myself and traveled more than 70,000 ks between them. Can't rate them high enough. RELIABLE and a lot more grunt than one would expect from a 500...............Sit on 130ks all day, 2 up with luggage (and lots of it) and still a (little) bit left for passing.

Stopping? Mmmmm, not so flash......... Even the twin discs didn't make a lot of difference over the single.
