View Full Version : Waikato: Coro Loop Ride - Sat 11/03/2006

Zed
8th March 2006, 13:08
To mark the end of a great summer I thought it appropriate to organise one more blast around the Loop before the weather changes dramatically. Anyone is welcome to join me but I'd prefer to ride with more serious experienced riders (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=535670&postcount=33)!

Meet: Autobahn, Papakura.
Time: 8.30am, leaving 9.00am sharp.
Destination: Coromandel Peninnsula, riding anti-clockwise and having lunch at either Whitianga or Coromandel townships. Will be stopping at Kopu S/Stn at approx. 10.15am to refuel and meet any other riders from the Waikato/Tauranga who wish to join us.
Pace: Medium to fast riders preferred.

Golden Rule for this ride:
When you come to an intersection or turnoff, if there is no-one behind you please stop until the next rider comes into your sights, that way he'll know which way to turn and won't get lost!

The last person through must be the volunteer TEC (tail end charlie) who will remain at the back of the entire group until the regrouping points. There will be about 3 regrouping points/locations for the Ak crew going down to Kopu, and only 2 regrouping points on the actual Loop. This rule more applies to the Ak-Kopu journey though, as the Coro Loop is basically one continuous road with few turnoffs...

Also, please make sure that you gas up at Papakura before 9am, and/or gas up at Kopu as soon as we arrive there, so we are not held up waiting.

Register your interest here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=771).

Hope to see you there!

Have fun Zed!. I will already be up in Coro at Port Charles at the missus' parents batch.

The Colville Connection mountain bike race is on and I need to get out in the boat and catch some snaps and maybe kings. :niceone: Got withdrawl symptoms from not doin any fishing lately.

Do you know if this mountain bike race is happening close to the main Loop road or not? I'd hate to give a whole lot of lycra wearing cyclists a fright if we come upon them suddenly! :shit:

Fishy
8th March 2006, 13:31
Nah your safe mate, its nowhere near the loop. Race starts in Colville and goes up the east coast (all gravel road) across via the Moehau and down the west coast and back down to Colville. The whole race is on gravel and dirt tracks.

It only those pansie road cyclists that wear the lycra, us mountain bikers get to wear body armour and other "cool" apparel :niceone:

Hi Matt - think I'll be at our bach this weekend but minus the Blackbird unfortunately. Gardening calls and some fishing from the kayak if I'm super lucky, so there might be some compensation for being on 4 wheels! Happy to be called if anyone strikes trouble as I have a trailer up there. Still got my mobile number?

Have a fantastic day - weather looks good for your run.

Be safe

8.30's pretty keen.9.00am sharp is the actual leave time, and i've found it best to get an earlier start cos it works in well with a lunch stop and you get home earlier in the afternoon.

The main reason I want to ride with experienced bikers is so that the ride is less complicated, and I can enjoy it much more and have peace of mind that it will go smoothly. There are special KB rides that cater for newbies & slow riders and this isn't one of them. Anyone is welcome to turn up but if you slow the group right down, get lost, or worst of all bin it, I will NOT be happy with you. :bash:

Well I wouldn't consider myself a newbie, will be a bit slower than you guys, but on past coro loops that's not been too much of a problem (that I know about) as I catch up when everyone stops.

Hiya all.

Hey Zed, Peripheral is a good bloke and has been riding a while and done a few Coro loops. He leaves earlier from stops and always catches up again when it's fuel up or lunch time.

If you want a good long blast, I don't think he minds being left behind as he enjoys riding and of course it's so much more fun when there's other bikes around even if you don't see them for a while. :)

He'll be ok. It's the fact he has a 250 which slows him down overall and if he had anything bigger, he'd stick with most.

Whoa there big boy time to deflate that head a little and give a guy some credit. I have ridden Coro loop with peripheral before and he does a real nice job of it...But I guess I don't qualify either as I wouldn't be serious enough cos I just do it for enjoyment, a social scene and as a hobby..!
You sound about as flexible as a Kauri stump there mate. May I suggest, to avoid the possibility of being slowed up, finding the lost or having to help someone who has binned, (as it can happen to ANY rider) that you do these rides in your own serious and experienced company...

I think the overall point here is, that it's going to be a quicker paced ride. If you can handle that, then that's ok. If you're still finding your feet and not so confident, or have a slower bike, then this ride probably isn't best for you

Ok, way to heat things up.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

I'm used to riding with other people that are plenty faster, while it's nice to have other people riding at the same pace at times (I can improve some aspects of my riding which are a little harder when riding by myself) I still enjoy going on group rides with faster riders as it provides some social aspect at the stops along the way versus riding by myself.

Zed if you don't want to a slower (but capable) rider tagging along then that's fine I'll either do the ride on my own or find some others to ride along with. I'd planned to do the loop anyway if the weather was good, as you mentioned the good weather won't last much longer.

Anyone else fancy a ride around Coro Loop, leaving around 9.30 from Papkura Autobahn? I'll start a separate thread if there's some interest.

He's a great guy and has organised many KB rides that have catered for all levels of riding over the past years.

Zed you may find the Worlds Slowest Indian around those parts of the world on the day. Just ride on as you do and he shall ride on as he does.

Zed can ride at his pace, I'm not suggesting that he slows down so I can follow him. There's alway people riding at different paces on most group rides. Hell it'd be stupid for some people to try to keep up with some of the fast guys on rides, that's how accidents can happen.

Why is everyone so hung up on the pace of a ride??? Unless you're not stopping it's not usually a problem, sure there's rides like the newbie rides where the pace is slow to keep people together so they can learn off other riders. Especially around the coro loop where everyone stops for lunch.

Hi Peripheral,

Don't think about it too much and get caught up in the shit flinging that we are seeing a lot of on KB lately.

From what people have said you seem like a nice guy and Zed has said he's happy for you to join in. If not for guys like him who regularly organise rides KB would be a boring place.

Why I usually ride the pace I do with the people I do: This happens about every 15 minutes on a mixed ride.

*comes to a stop at a minor intersection*
Me: "if-niggle-whap-mumble-thingy"
OtherRider: "Eh?"
*turns off motor*
Me: "I SAID WHERE THE F**K IS EVERYONE ELSE? Err, sorry."
OtherRider: "I Don't know, I got bored and f**ked off past that milk tanker"
Me: "Oh, the others are all behind then...Oh, here they are"
*more bikes rumble in*
waiting...
waiting...
*last bike finally comes in*
Me: "Let's get this show on the road then..."
waiting...
*late people take gear off and have a chat about the weather*
OtherRider: "Bollocks to this. Let's go."
Me: "Yeah. HEY YOU FULLAHS, YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING?"
The rest: "Erm, no"
Me: "It's easy, just turn down whats-it-face road" (not realising I actually mean who-thunk-it road)

It was even worse on the ride to Paeroa Races a few weeks back, with little sub groups of people coming and going. In the end, I just turned up to Paeroa with Spank and hoped everyone else made their own way.

Zed said he wants to leave early, get a move on and not get home too late. This is why you need to be either

b) Experienced enough to look after yourself if you do know the way but like to take it slower

Ok, fair enough in that circumstance, if you've got people who don't know the route and have to wait at intersections. You don't actually have to have everyone wait for the people to catch up at intersections, one person can wait for the next person who then waits.....and so it goes.

I'd hope most people can look after themselves, but hey society and personal responsibility (lack thereof) aren't helping that.

Anyway, see you all there on Saturday.

Fuck what anybody thinks.

Look forward to catching up with you again on Saturday Peripheral. I'ld ride with ya anytime mate:niceone:

Cheers,

Zed :ride:

Where's Du Vin intersection?

Anyway, I had a good ride out today. I think I saw you bunch at that pub near the one way bridge...dunno the town's name. I couldn't see the stealth fighter that is BJ's 636 though, and I thought (know) that I saw that just before I left from Papakura. Maybe he went elsewhere though.

I had a great ride myself. Moderate amount of road works around, but no real drama. Heaps of campervans out, but easily despatched they were. No rain, though the West side of the Peninsula was a bit damp when I was riding up.

Going solo gave me heaps of time to work on my riding, and I was feeling a million times better after it. Still making a few mistakes here and there, but overall feeling heaps more confident after changing my body position on the bike a bit. The 'Blade seems to want you to stay right the hell out of the front end equation once the bike's in a corner, even more so than other bikes. So, weighting the pegs way more and gripping with elbows and knees and she's all sweet :niceone:

Cost yer a ride on the beasty..Had a great ride also being my first Loop on the new Busa. Different to me old girl for sure and a little more challenging in the real tight stuff than the Bandit (suspect its a wheelbase & weight thing) but not too much of a problem though I took it slow and hope I didn't hold anyone up.. One thing I have learned is that that rear tyre certainly has a limit to the amount of horse power that it can put to the road when accelerating out of a tight bend..! Gotta watch that one..

Just now got home, washed the bike & leathers and now i'm completely stuffed! :zzzz:

Everything about the ride was positive imo, weather, roads (there's always roadworks!), riders, food & conversation.

Thanks to all those who attended, I counted 22 bikes at one stage and I know of 3 more who caught us up at Coromandel town. 1/3 of the group decided to double back from Coro town after lunch so there was only about a dozen of us who carried on anti-clockwise to Kopu and then back home, so I hope all went well for those riders, Gareth, Bugjuice, CaN, etc.

Good on you guys who rode up from Te Puke, Tauranga, etc, and a special thanks to Mr Peripheral for volunteering to go TEC for the whole ride, you're always welcome on my rides bud!

Left a bit late so got to Autobahn and everyone had gone, as expected. Thought...I'll go down 2 and catch them at Kopu. Ha! About a mile past Aitkenhead Timbers yard, on SH2, I thought....WTF is this wall of dust and debris sliding up the road to meet me! Hard on the picks and stop short of a truck and trailer that had flipped and totally blocked the road. On to the grass verge , stop by the cab and off. The driver was OK - totally in shock, but no physical injuries....looked like one of the airbags on the trailer suspension had deflated, and flipped the trailer over the armco and then hauled the truck over!. Was thinking - 10 secs further down the road and the thing would have taken me out!
Anyway - to Kopu and then up and over the hill, thinking I might see them at Whitianga. Hustling round to Coroglen and there they all are....At the Pub!Set off to Whitianga - seems some go to the gas station, some go on.......yes, the Moth club (Ithink) had a flyin at the airport, so heaps of biplanes around the place....but....I digress. Over to Coromandel for lunch....only the second time Ive done that hill...think I got the hang of it going down....sorry to anyone I may have pressured to get past.....
Leaving Coromandel, a bunch turned back towards Whitianga so....why not
A good pace to Whitianga, refuel, then Kiwifruit 2much and I take off and head for Whangamata. Great run over the hill, to the pub at Whanga...Eventually we head off to Waihi....clouds, drizzle..wet roads....Fuck!Just enough moisture for me to drop my speed in abject fear of a front wheel losein the tight and slipperies....Didnt seem to phase Tomuch though....he just fucked of into the distance, rooted rear Racetech and all...whats a few More wet slides to go with the dry sliding he had been doing all day!! The gorge from Waihi was wet, but at least we didnt get rained on. At Paeroa, Kiwifruit turned for Taupo and I headed for home....
A great day, good riding with Kfruit and 2much and the others and 560km clicked up. Good, I can get the 2nd service out of the way now.

was a good day, all the people that came over to whitianga made it back safely. Had a good pace over the hill with SPman's group of gixers(more 2much's group - SP) close on the tail of buggy and myself. Was an awesome pace, but nothing rediculously stupid!

Met some boyracers as we refuelled at whitianga and was prompted to do a wheelie on my way to the public toilets... didnt eventuate the way i planned due to a bit of traffic but still got it up all the same. Shit, i even managed one in the middle of the twisties as i passed the boyracers and a van later on, twas only a foot or so high but in the middle of the twisties (and me at the controls) i was pretty chuffed :first:

off to paeroa then kopu.
Took it fairly easy in the group ride,
no more than 5/10ths etc as i had a dream i binned it last night...
Some fantastic roads up there! especailly enjoyed the 25 & 35k corners just out of coromandel
the thou feels so light compared to my old bike

had a good ride back, Thanks 2much and sp man.
i really enjoy riding with you guys (and saul),
well tuned road users you are

Nice to meet a few new faces,
sorry i didn't meet you all, im a little shy IRL

Look forward to the next time!
Regards, Allan.

wow, what a ride..

Thanks for organising it Zed, was a good run.

I'm crap at 2 things - writing post-ride reports when I'm this knackered, and remembering faces and names.. but here goes..

Hadn't done the whole loop before, so I was quite keen to get this one in while the weather is still somewhere decent. I've been up both sides a couple of times, but never gone from Coro town to fitianga (woteva). Boy, what have I been missing!!

The ride started off all well, aside from the roadworks that got my clean bike dirty. mmmm poor bike.
Got to Kopu, no dramas, everything all cushty. So we start off the ride, and it's all not too bad. But the traffic was all in the good bits!! ARGH!! Got stuck behind some X11 thing, too fat to pass, so I had to watch. Got a nice pace going, then caught up to more traffic, headed by a large truck. The truck was carrying roof panels secured down by ratchet straps and wood. They bounced off and into the road! CaN2 was just behind and darted out the way. CaN1 was right behind and avoided the wood too. I saw it in plenty of time, and thought I'd kick it out of the road.. mmmm ouch. Bloody hurts kicking a 4x4 2ft long bit of timber out the road.. but worked.

Managed to pass the truck and traffic, and on with the ride. Not too much more drama, but a good ride. Got to fitianga (woteva) for some fuel, stopped at the round about and passed on some other riders, then was told to carry on myself. I got lost in the town, but soon found the gas station. I also noted how lonely I was there.. mmm no other bikes. I saw Saul pass and point the other way, thought fairy fluff, I'll be right there, just need gogo juice. Gassed up, headed off.. still no one around. So thought I'd just follow the signs, and hope the rest of the group managed to head the right way. Still no one around, so a solo run it is. Open her up,, and I'm greeted with the 34kms to Coromandle township, with the 20 odd of twisties. That was fun. Some serious left-right-left-left-right-left etc etc roads to be had, and good surface to boot. I managed to catch up to Perhipial (sp..??) about 10kms from the end, then started to catch up to the end runners few by few. Those corners.. man, they're awesome. Hadn't done 25k corners at 65 before..

Anyway, get to coromandle, and looks like I've been along with the rest of the group all the time.. Grab some lunch while reflecting on the last stretch, and decide it has to be done again. Garethd came the other way, so he's effectively going back. CaN 1&2 are going, and so is ChickenFunkStar..?? so it'll be a good run. We part with the rest with a courtesy wheelie, and we're back on the good stuff, but with some company. Gareth is kinda there when I back off to look, but I'm havin too much fun, so buggerit. The twisties just keep comin and comin. Get to fitianga again, have a chin wag for half an hour, then we carry on. The roads that were covered with traffic, are now fairly free. So more fun.

No real dramas again, just tryin to push the envelope on every corner that wee bit more. Man, it's physical to go that hard for that long - I should know.. The tyres and bike are holding up well. Shame the road gave at one point. The exposed tar was melting a little, the front slid across the lane and put me on the white line. I sat it up to stop the front from going any further and loose the 'cornering momentum' to find myself in the middle of the road. No probs. Hello van.. For some reason, the van was only a mere minor technicality. I was already over it just as I saw it, and I was already lining up for the next corner. The van is just an obstacle.. strange way of thinking, i thought. But hey, i'm still here, so something upstairs must have been working right.

For the rest of the ride to Kopu was just pure fun and little traffic. I get there to find Postie had text me to say that they had made it an hour earlier. So we natter for a bit longer, then head back via the miranda route onto 2, and back up the motorway in our little cluster. Got bored, so we had to entertain ourselves at 100kphandthensome just to make the time pass..

The whole day was a good day. Nothing went wrong, I'm utterly cream crackered, and had a blast. The pace was good, and so was the company all round. Bloody enjoyed the day and meeting the people. And I'd do it all again tomorrow.
I had noticed when I got home, that my chain was bone dry, so might need a new one now, but I think I've rooted the wheel bearing too. have to check that out later.. Went and inhaled a subway in record time, and now I'm gonna chill for a bit

anyway, look how long I've rabbited on for!! bling for whoever bloody reads this dribble.

Anyway, to sum it up, had fun, thanx Zed and company :niceone:

Thank you Zed for the awesome day.
It was a long one for me as I have only just got back to Rotovegas.
Thanks to Kiwifruit, 2much & Saul for the company on the way up & sorry I missed you on the way home....I went of up the Thames coast side with the others & then sat in the Kopu pub waiting for you to turn up until it become obvious you weren't going to. Then went back into Thames and spent couple hours with the olds.
Felt really good this morning but as the day progressed my riding turned to shit & I really was not happy......Coro to Thames was the pits for me.
Good to see so many different people enjoying themselves & being responsible.
Really impressed with your new bike Steve. No offence taken on the passing maneuvers, just don't get carried away!!
Till next time people.

Hiya,

Gareth d, Was that you heading North into Coromandel about 12-12.30ish on your own mate?

The three bikes heading South were myself a mate on a red R1 and a Gold Speed triple. We were doing the loop anticlockwise and left earlier this morning and had been riding at a good hard pace.

Great day for riding. The roadworks along the coast were a pain :( Had to slow the pace there a bit.

both me and CaN2 had bees/wasps fly up into behind our visors (at different times of course) at open road speed... which is wierd. She stopped and got it out, i managed to open my visor and let it fly away on the go... still a wierd experience.

I don't go on newbie rides anymore unless I know whom I'm riding with. Yesterday's ride was meant for serious or experienced riders only, so I thought a bit of passing would be tolerated.

If you don't feel like a bit of a blat why don't you move over and let people pass? It only takes a second.

Stop crossing the centreline
Stop riding on the wrong side of the road
Don't dangerously overtake - no matter how impatient you're getting!
Don't make idiotic statements like "you can ride just like you do on the track down any road like state highway 22"

WeeStromer, if it were just me that felt this, I'd keep it to myself. However there are at least 4 other rides just from yesterday who feel exactly the same way - this is enough to seriously concern, let alone several other riders on other rides who have expressed the same sentiments in the past.

Hmm, yes I am impatient, it's one of my many flaws. I wonder why I was made so impatient though?

Don't make idiotic statements like "you can ride just like you do on the track down any road like state highway 22".

The statement and reasoning behind it was (ACADEMICALLY SPEAKING)- on a 250cc you can ride as fast on Pukekohe as you can do on a combination of Sh22 -( the Esses before Castrol,) Miranda Straights (Jennian and the Straights) and SH25 (the hairpin and the right hander after passing the pit entrance). -- but you can't on a big bike....... agree or disagree, I don't care either way.

WeeStromer, if it were just me that felt this, I'd keep it to myself. However there are at least 4 other rides jsut form yesterday who feel exactly the same way - this is enough to seriously concern, let alone several other riders on other rides who have expressed the same sentiments in the past.

I can guess who those 4 riders are whom you are talking about. One of them I respect and will from now on always behave when around him as he was completely justified in his comments and I was wrong. As for the others, they all suffer from the same "my ego is too big to move over syndrome".

How the fuck dose anyone get stung by a Bee on the back of the neck while riding a bike...? postie that is the ultimate in bad luck I hope your not alergic to them.

It was a wasp I think, it must have been coming along for the ride till he decided he had come far enough. I think it was in my collar as the fucker only sting me when I took my jacket off to cool down, felt the sting and I rubbed my neck and pulled out the barb, not allergic to them but my neck went all tingly for a while, I haven't been stung for years and I forgot how much it sucks.

Still I had a great ride, that was the first time I had even been to the Coromandle, I’m sure it’s a very beautiful place, but all I saw was corner, corner, corner .... ooo the sea.... corner corner. Bloody awesome. I learnt a lot about riding as I hope I always do during each ride.
The hill between Whitianga and Coro town is phenomenal, it’s by far the best road I have ever ridden and the new Dunlop GRP100's frikkin loved them.
The new tyres had super fast warm up and have an amazing amount of grip, its pretty hard to get tyres to slip out on a 400 as it obviously doesn't have much horse power, but the old Dragon started to give in towards the end and slip when pushed hard in the corners but the Dunlops were not budging an inch. Also the Dunlops manage to give a lot more feed back but at the same time manage to damp a lot of the bikes vibration. The last long ride I did on the bike with the old tyres made my hands feel like they were hooked up to 12 volts for about half an hour after I got off the bike, but the new Dunlop's eliminated my buzz hands completely.
Also Kerry suggested we go back to the original tyre size on the rear from a 150/60/18 to a 140/60/18, the result was a much quicker turn in, the bike handled really well before but now its almost automatic, I just look where I want to go and the bike just does it. I'll be sticking with these tyres for a while; I just want to see how long they last.
Back to the ride, cheers Zed, brilliantly organised, the only scary part of the day was when JSG asked me to play with him, seriously mate, I might be white and a good dancer, but it doesn't mean I like to play with little boys.

Thanks for your input, we all very pleased you decided to share that with us.
In actual fact the ride was a great. The issue that have been raised has been a concern for a long time. It needs to be adressed. Whether it is taken heed of is up to the individual.

and so it does everytime

GPR70 is pure track low kms sorta tyre, GPR100 (new version of the GPR80) is sports touring but they are soft as hell on the outsides so I doubt it would make much difference apart from on a track. Being sports tourer they have a harder middle which seems to corrugate quite easily while the sides will just ball and shred being softer.

And the best part about riding awesome roads like the Coro Loop is that you can never get enough of it and it only gets better and better the more you ride it and get to know it! Next time round i'm sure you'll get to take in more of the wonderful sights.

Glad you had a good virgin ride around the Loop Postie and got home safe n sound, despite having a leaking radiator!! :2thumbsup

duel compound i think. still a great tyre for a 400 machine, plenty of grip on the outside but still gonna last as i commute on them too.

thanks mate, cibby also really enjoyed the day all though she was feeling a little under the weather.
All i was thinking about last night is i wish that hill was closer to auckland, but then i guess we would all be going through tyres at a greater rate.

in all seriousness mate, when you caught up to us at the front before we got to clevedon, you were riding like a fool. Your not slow so you can quite with that bollocks now, but you joined the pack and we had a pace going, I was at the back, you over took me fine, no problems but then you over took Cibby with a car and trailer coming towards you, I don't think you noticed but the trailer had pretty wide mud guards and it missed your foot by about 6 inches, if you had clipped that, you would have taken out your self and Cibby and possibly myself, then you proceed to over take each bike till you are sat behind Zed again. Its not a race, there are no points and no winners. I'm not wanting to sling shit, but no body wants to see you crash and get injured and no body wants to be around if you take another biker with you. I'm glad your going to the manfield track day, cos like myself, I think you will learn alot. Don't take any of this the wrong way, just please be more courteous on group rides.

Well, what can I say to that.....Sorry for making you guys feel uncomfortable.

I saw the mud guards on the trailer, the car was an early 90's dark brown mid-sized sedan, with a grey metal trailer. - the mudguards were a foot away from the centreline. Cibby was roughly 2-2.5 feet from the left edge of the road. I had 3-4 feet of space to pass through. Then I had the other side of the road as well once the car passed as there was about 100+ meters of clear space ahead. That car was travelling near the speed limit and you guys were doing about 14X ish...... so the chances of either of you'll changing lanes was nil, even if you did I would have passed by in the gap. So I went for it....... Should I have waited, perhaps yes. Did I think I was putting you or your lady in danger - no.

Yes I will behave myself from now on and only play around if I know the rider next to me wants to have a go too..... time and place eh. :bash:

It's been a long time since I let the devil inside come out and control my riding.....hopefully I've put some of my demons to rest and manage to take it easy from now on.

I'm a pretty slow rider, and have nothing to really boast about. So take all the stuff here with a grain of salt.

2Much says you're a good rider and from what I saw of him on Sat I was very impressed. So for him to call you good, you must have superb riding skills.

It would be great to catch up with ya and learn some skills of you.:hitcher:

Provided you don't mind riding slowly with a newbie.
