Custom front disks....

With the cost of front disks being basically silly expensive... I was wondering what are the costs in making your own...

The material can't cost more that a couple hundred and if you got the hook up with someone with a CNC machine you'll only pay a little for that as well...

This isn't a really serious though as yet but maybe If a couple people get together make a few etc etc etc it might be profitable to all..

And it doesn't have to end at brake disks. We pay through the teeth for most of the parts and such we get for our bikes and with a little time and reasearch and a lot less money it might be eaier to design and build our own..

Wouldn't the material for the rotors be specialy developed for the purpose. They have to withstand high temp's with out warping, extreme changes in temp etc.

materials are just that... Materials...

If you find out what they are made of (grade of SS or whatever) then all you need to do is get them machined.

CNC machines are pretty damn accurate so i wouldn't worry about any accuracy issues as long as the dimensions are correct. Hell I could just copy an origional one...

The thing I was getting at is that if say 3 people went in on a set you could make them fairly cheap (might be good for racers etc etc etc)

Becareful, while it might not matter much what you make the rotor out of , , the Top hats that a bit different.

Materials are Just that Materials , but they all have differnt properties which make them better suited for the Job Wood is wood but I wouldnt build my house from balsa ( and before anyone asks I dont know what would be the most suitable, with out a bit of research

It's not just getting the right material. You have to take account of things like the direction of the grain within the steel (yes, steel does have grain, just like wood). And CNC machines are not all that accurate - we're talking some very fine control of flatness , thickness here otherwise the disk will have local hot spots under hard braking which will warp it after a while.

Ok sure.... but will some investigation I'll be able to find out. There will be some standards somewhere. Using carbon steel might be the way to go we'll see.

It was just an idea though. As for CNC machines not being accurate i suppose it depends on the machine.Some can get down to 1/1000th of a mm. But then it depends on the machine..

This idea I had wasn't just for disks I'm thinking rearsets etc etc etc.
