thank fuck the council has finally done something about this , these cafe owners have spoilt it for themselves , for instance cezanne used to have 2 small tables outside not blocking access to pedestrians etc etc , last time i went past you couldnt even park your car outside without opening your door into a patron , to walk past i had to walk on the road , it was fucken ridiculous .
resteraunts spilling out onto the footpath have got worse and worse , you can see awnings out there to give diners shelter and further inconvinience pedestrians , if we parked our bikes on the footpath like these pilick cafe and resteraunt owners park their chairs and tables we'd get a ticket quick smart .
i had an arguement down the 3 lamps end after buying a roll from a bakery , i sat down at the tables outside a cafe and some foreigner cafe owner came out and told me i cant sit there , what i said you telling me i cant sit here in this public area partly owned by me a tax paying rate paying new zealander ,i told him to fuck off back to his own country and sat there and then left my rubbish for him to clean up .

hahahahaha, I ate at pretty much every establishment on Ponsy-Road in the late 90's, the food was good, and the drag queens plentiful.

something must be fucked with the matrix - cause i agree with WINJA.
sometimes its nice to have a cold beer outside after a long day. especially if your a smoker. but i hate it how you see posers eating outside... when the weather is shit and the cafe inside is empty.
they are sitting outside in the rain/cold/wind just so you can see them drinking their sav and eating some $30 salmon bagel.
and then theres the owners who think they are in france, asking you as you walk by to come in for lunch. leave me the fuck alone. if i was hungry i would be eating already...

NOTHING WRONG WITH SOME OF THE FOOD , A FEW GOOD BURGER JOINTS THERE , CEZANNES WAS OK ESPECIALLY THE NACHOS AND MUFFINS , OPEN LATE CAFE HAS SOME GOOD FOOD AS WELL AND THAT USED TO ALL BE SERVED OFF THE FOOTPATH

Sounds like the 'Strip' in Christchurch. At least there is still some footpath space left. Last I read the council wants to charge them rent and will be asking them to close it off or pay, the cafe owners have hired security guards almost as some sort of 'enforcers' of their right to use the area...

I have to agree.... after this new smoking law... you can hardly walk down the footpath for tables and chairs and velvet roped off areas....
last time i looked, they were foot paths.... for feet, not bums to sit

Bugger me. Is that the old AMC shop? Is it a cafe now. I bet my oil stains are still on the footpath. Nothing would get them out. I reckon I spent more time aprked up outside that place than I did riding!

I didn't park my cars outside of course,I parked them down the side street. One night I parked my 1938 Chev Coupe there, parallel parked of course. When I came back to the car the (6 volt) battery was flat...so I pushed it out of it's parking space (backwards and forwards, lock to lock),then did a 3 point turn in the narrow road, this is a 38 Chev remember...then pushed it down the road until I could hill start it.Gotta be hard to forget that place.

You think chairs and tables are a problem. Hell come down to Chch and the foot path is cluttered up with shop sighns. Those sandwich board types. Try and wakl down some of the footpaths in Colombo St especilly arcade and mall entrances and you bloody well near trip over the bloody things.

Jesus Winja, you'd bloody hate Lygon St in Melbourne. All those Greeks and Ities trying to get you in their restaurants. They even use humour! And there's all those people out on the footpath having a great meal and a bloody good time.
We even had to walk around some tables!
It's appalling. I might write a letter to the editor.

winja....you raise a bloody good point. we dont have anything near that bad here, but there are a few places that have tables and chairs out, the main one being the buzz bar, across from where i work. they even have a little fence thing that slots into holes in the ground. tables and chairs, i think 3 with 2 chairs...in the summer they have umbrellas in the tables, which makes it even worse. just the right height to lose an eye.

Not only that but I (and plenty of others) used to park in the free motorbike parking area that used to be there, but got removed when the footpath was extended for those cafes.

And who, pray tell, is also pondering closing down several city public libraries and public pools because it is costing them money to keep them running, but at the same time contemplating a $100M sculpture? If you read The Press daily (opinion section) as I do - nothing else to read on my breaks at work - you'll know that the Christchurch City Council is trying very hard to fuck the city up and make as much money as they can in the process. They've totally lost their focus for improving the city for everyone, not just their silver lined pockets. CCC is wasting taxpayers money with bullshit sculptures and art pieces when serious assets to the city and general maintainence and improvents are being ignored. They need a serious wakeup call.

You can thank the Govt for these local body initiatives. It was the Govt that changed the Local Bodies Act to enable them to indulge in profit making ventures.
Then again, Aucklanders voted for Cereal Man. Before that it was Banksie, they deserve all they get.

You're not wrong there Redge, curiously I found this:
Purpose of local government—
The purpose of local government is—
(a)to enable democratic local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of, communities; and
(b)to promote the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of communities, in the present and for the future.

I'm no lawyer but to me it suggests that the CCC is running contary to the LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT 2002 (http://www.legislation.govt.nz/libraries/contents/om_isapi.dll?clientID=2030421052&infobase=pal_statutes.nfo&jump=a2002-084&softpage=DOC). The closing of public facilities can hardly fulfil point (b).
Roll on the local body elections next year.

Indeed. Trouble is, you can stand on your Soap Box and preach all you like, you just get ignored. There are lots of people who aren't impressed with this at all. On top of that, CCC has taken companies off it's stragetic asset list, which frees them up for later sale. Included in these: Christchurch Red Bus Company, surely an asset to the city of great value; and Port of Lyttleton, which used to turn a profit until CCC decided to muck around with it. Now that it's making a loss, CCC is trying to sell it off, using it as a cash cow, when obviously Port of Lyttelton is a humongous asset to the region.
It's beyond me how these guys deserve to get paid.
