View Full Version : My Wake Up Call (binned it)

Well went on a ride with some kb people from hamiltron this afternoon.
Now I have not been riding long but I have clocked up 8000k's on the and not Bined it. Little did i know that was about to all change today.
So yeah I was not feeling to bad about my riding having clocked up 8000k's in 4 months. I was starting to think I was an ok rider. Never really did anything stupid alway watched what I was doing.
Well I was behind John on his DT175 starting to enjoy the roads. When we came to a bit of a tight right hander slight downhill.
I was not going to fast at alL maybe about 45 to 50k's hit a little bit of a dip or bump in the road witch put me off abit and put me off line and I ran wide on the corner. As soon as the wheels hit the grass the bike was go right out from under me. landed on my right knee and hip did the head over heels trick and landed on my ass. Got up and yelled the F word about 10 times then picked the bike up.
So I now have a hole in the knee of my shift jeasn, my helmet is a bit scratched up, dirt all over my leather jacked, dirt all over my boots, some little cracks in the ferrings and one side has some light scratching all over it, and the frame that holds the blade on is abit bent.
And last but not least abit of a dented ego too
SO YEAH I GOT A WAKE UP CALL THATS FOR SURE.
All and all I did not come off to badly. Thank God for that one.
Ferrings are already off and are going to go drop them off tomorrow. The bike is all loaded up. Its getting droped off tomorroow to get the front end checked out. To make sure its all lined up as it should be

It was a tricky little piece of road. Lots of camber changes and a few ripples and bumps on some of the corners. There were a number where you tip it one way, stand her up, over the hump and tip it the opposite direction.
A few minutes later I had a classic moment while doing a u turn. What an arse. Strained my thigh trying to catch it.

Here's why you binned. Wrong attitude. You say you were not going to fast. Wrong. You were riding to the edge and when you needed to make a correction for the bump you were going fast too do so. You were lucky a car or bike was not coming the other way. A wake up call is no good unless you learn from it.
Just not too sure you have learnt anything today. Hope my post rings alarms bells in you. Next time you cross the centre line you may not be so lucky.

'Twas a right hander so running wide presumably put him into the grass on his own side of the road. If you have to crash, running off a right hander into grass is about as good as it gets. Shit happens, watch out for bumps (and holes, gravel, oil, cow shit and bath tubs) next time.
Real question you need to be asking is "once it went pear shaped how could I have recovered ?" (Clue - push push push )

Not to sure I think once it started to go pear shaped I could see the out side of the coner getting closer and freaked abit. I did not stand her up and try to brake i kept leaning but I was looking at the wrong place.
I dont really know it happened fast ay one min i was having a good time next min i hit a bump or dip felt the bike bounce round abit. next thing i am way of line and going oh fuck

You summed it up right there. Target fixation!
Easier said than done but you have to train yourself to look where you want to go in times like this. Never look down 'cos thats where you'll go. Keep the throttle open too, or even open it up a bit more and look at where you want to be.
I still have a thing about right hand, downhill, off cambre corners after doing much the same thing.
Bummer you binned but good to see you came out the other end in one piece.

Hey dude, sorry to hear about your accident and all that bullshit, however I'd like to know, is the rule of "Look where you want you and the bike to go" applicable in this situation? The fact you freaked caused a loss of concentration on where you wanted the bike to go, resulting in the accident?
Looks like you came out of it reasonably well for a 50kmp/h crash, I guess that shows you handled coming off well (i.e. keeping the bike somewhat upright until hitting the crash). Good for you, sobering learning experience.

That sounds HEAPS better than.. I was riding well within my abilities and I still can't keep the bike upright.

Seeing as it was only 5km down the road from where ZeroIndex had his 1st ever unintentional offroad adventure I'd say your head probably wasn't quite back in the ride yet too. Also, there were quite a few off camber corners through there. Maybe you hit bumps combined with bad camber which put you in the grass.

Mine was an intentional offroad adventure, once my mind decided that no matter what i wasn't going round that corner, i decided "i'm going to slow down on that nice grassy patch... the only thing i didn't expect was a huge f**king pavement-like section of lifted grass and sand

Dude, sounds to me like you had never had to test your ability to handle things AFTER they had gone pear-shaped. A wake-up call is exactly right. Don't stress about it tho. Unless you are veeery lucky, the ability to handle oh-shit moments can only be learned the way you have. Most of us have had them, some have binned and some have managed to keep it together - sometimes is only luck. Glad it wasn't more serious for you.

Your response indicates that nothing has been learnt from your 'bin.'
I will give you some serious advice this from someone who has been riding all their life.
NEVER THINK YOU ARE AN OK RIDER. Those that 'did' are dead or crippled.
Now you have a choice with your riding. You can listen to people who will give you sympathy and nothing else or listen to people who, if you take their advice just might help to become a better rider and keep you alive. Your choice.

To the rest of us "Going wide...." means to the ouside of the corner. On a right-hander this does NOT mean you will cross the centre line. Just what he said....

Do those things have adjustable suspension? If so check to see you've got it set up right. By the sounds of it, you may want to make it a bit more forgiving for now then firm it up later as you improve.
BTW, As you're the only person I've heard to have 'tested' them, how did you find the Shift jeans stood up? say compared to normal jeans, and Draggins if you know how they perform?

Nah they don't mate. I've been telling Road Rash to get an RGV front end and graft that in seeing as his flatmate is a fabricator and made the muffler that's on his bike. While they're at it, Momentum is a very similar bike. They'd be a very trick pair of CBR 250's then.

Very unforgiving road, one little mistake and your fucked. The main problem is there are no road markings and the road is narrow, so taking the wrong line into corner and running wide would be very easy to do.
Pathos
13th March 2006, 18:25
Momentum, I know you're not an idiot on the road from riding with you and good stuff for putting on the 8kkms.
Downhill corners are bitch, they can be sweet or gravity punishes you, I've run wide once or twice on the corner just outside my house because you the loss of grip and the ground falls away from you.
I'm really guessing at this but at 45-50k you probably could have pulled through if you'd given yourself a chance by looking through the corner. Its hard to make it your initial reaction tho. very hard. I don't know how I'd react in the same situation and I'm sure theres plenty of experienced riders who would end up in the grass.
best of luck.

Earlier this afternoon I was coming down Matakana Valley Road in Matakana (extremely twisty road down hill) and went off into gravel. The bike did all sorts of weird things but I managed to keep it upright, luckily.
The thing which ammused me though, was the cause, I simply looked exactly where I was going, which happened to be off the road. I laugh now because the corner could of easily been navigated.
I wonder how many bike accidents are causd by this simple rule.

He and most others here don't want your self-righteous, unfeeling advice, so go back and crawl under the rock from which you came!
Some people are a bit slow aye Zed i am glad you are all right matey unfortunately i was not so lucky i did a similar type of binn recently and was not so lucky i broke my wrist off my arm and have 3 fractures around my thumb a plate in my hand with 3 wires keeping my wrist together and still alot of pain and its been 5 weeks now,and to top it off 4 months minimum off work,so you are very lucky.Be hard on yourself dude look at the accident from all angles you are one of the lucky ones to come out uninjured[/QUOTE]

Click on the User Control Panel (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/usercp.php) link, then click on the Buddy/Ignore List (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/profile.php?do=editlist) link, click in one of the boxes on the right hand side, type in SkyRyder and then click on the button that says Update Ignore List. All will be good with the world.
See Zeds post #53. The bit about crawling under a rock or in your case putting your head up your muffler.

I wonder how many bike accidents are causd by this simple rule.
hehe that's pretty much what i did... except i didn't notice the lump in the grass until i was too close to it... *If only i had carried on looking at the other side of the corner...* oh well, my bike is back to normal, so i'll just chalk it down to experience...

No he didn't, he said 'He was in the centre, period. It's not a 'what' but a place. Just think about it it'll come'. Apparently if you think about it, it'll just come... It's either some useless zen shit, or someones (trying to) covering up their fuckup :niceone:
