View Full Version : Making traffic lights 'see' you.

It's really easy - put your side stand down and let the bike rest on it for a fraction of a second - just needs to touch the ground momentarily.
Works every time.

The field sensors the traffic lights use are much more sensitive than that, there's more than enough metal in any bike to trip them. Depending on how fresh the gear is, it may vary on where you cross/pass the pads too.

Excellent tip BD. I'll try it for myself next time I'm being 'ignored' at the lights.

traffic lights don't have eyes Dave. how old are you?
anyway, they're like Christmas Tree lights. there for show and to annoy when they blink..
oh, on a note tho, anyone who does that, make sure it's in neutral before you put the side stand down, else most bikes will cut out - clutch in or not

I think you'll find it's the act of moving the side stand and tiping the bike to the side which alters the magnetic field of the bike, touching the ground will not have any effect initself. It's all about trying to move metal near the sensors.

So steel capped boots would be sweet. I should patent that.

I usually stop right over the box, right in the middle... if that doesn't do it on it's own then rev the bike a little as this should generate some kinda current that sets it off or something.
Well works for me anyhow.

There are 4 sets in Akl that i cross regularly that won't register. - regardless. side stand trick works em

Lookup: inverted commas and their use in grammar.
Or pull the clutch in re neutral

Dave, are you trying to hurt some of the newbies here? You forgot to tell them to make sure the bike has stopped before putting the side stand down.

I forgot it's Akl and you can't assume people will stop at red lights - eh?

tried most tricks at the lights....nothin seems to work. even had a point where me and another gn were sitting there together and the lights missed us constantly. in the end we waited till was clear and slipped across.
usually im happy to wait for a car to come up behind me and go with them, but if its late at night and there are no cars, i might go straight on the red, or if the cross lights to me left are constant greens, then ill go left on the red and get across that way. go to the point where i know how certain sets of lights are set up and where the greens are at around midnight, so use them to my advantage.

I heard somewhere (maybe here?) that turning the starter on for a second is supposed to trigger them. Don't need to stop the bike or anything, just thumb the starter button.
Dunno if it works though, the times I've tried it the lights might've been about to change anyway.

Thanks for the tips, (and the laughs!). I've been ignored by traffic lights many times even on my old heavy steel 'F', so may try one or two of these ideas.

Revving has been said to work, and I think it works for me.
More fun than the side stand to, one big rev, out close to redline... :yeah:

I just brake heavily which heats up the front discs and increases their magnetic field triggering the lights.

I have been known after 2 cycles on my old bike on to just move infront of the line and signal for a car behind me to pull up. they ussually dont get it sigh.

Use this trick all the time, works everytime.... but it does get annoying on the gixxer sometimes... bloody new bikes... be suprised if you couldn't fart on one without setting off a kill switch :argh:

why pay someone for that when you can just dissassemble an old hard drive and use those?.. i have 2 epoxied in my chin spoiler and they work every time...

Yeah Hard Drive magnets are tiny and insanely powerful. No way would they fall off.
I personally kill the engine, and then restart. The amount of power required to go through the starter motor is a lot more than all the other things on your bike combined, this will give the biggest possible magnetic field.

I'm trying out a few of those things and killing the engine and restarting seems to work the best for me so far.

Hmm
How about HDD magnets in your boots glued inside or out? Im going to give this a try and attach some pics. I have a few crappy 1gb HDD's to spare. Magnets can't do any harm to us as far as I know being close contact to them for long periods of time. Well coming from products like bio mag blankets etc.
There is 2 Sets of lights that I have come to grief with.
1) Pakuranga Road + Ti Rakau Dirve - Ones next to Westfield’s shopping centre, coming off the Pamure bridge turning right to go onto TiRakau Drive.
2) Pakuranga Road + Gossamer Drive - Coming from town centre direction turning Right into Gossamer Drive.

Gotta concur with you BD.
Been using that technique since I read it here, not only does it seem to work every time, it also seems to fast track the phase in my favour.
ie: pull up, neutral, stand down, stand up, in gear, green light, gotta be quick with the stand up on some lights.
Cheers:niceone:

Ok here are the pics of my "magnetic boot". I only have done one boot, as one should be enough and put the magnet in the left boot because I usually have the bike more to the right of the road than centre. I have tried having the bike exactly in the centre and the left but it makes no difference to trigger them off so it seems.
Once I get the bike back I shall post again and give the results.

Jeez, I tried the magnets, bloody nightmare, almost trashed the bike as my feet were pulled and got stuck on the exhaust pipes!

I have seen what they can do - they are not too strong. (I have had stronger magnets in which will easily hold on each side of your hand etc) The best they can do is hold a screwdriver or two.

So if it's true that... "it's the act of moving the side stand and tiping the bike to the side which alters the magnetic field of the bike, touching the ground will not have any effect initself. It's all about trying to move metal near the sensors."... then we should see you guys with magnetic boots flailing your feet all around while stopped at the lights?
PLEASE tell me which lights you're going to be doing this at -- it will be the best entertainment in a long time :corn:
