Curious - the Coro-loop is around the Coromandel Pen? A one day trip?
Ta.

13th March 2006, 13:02
yup, one day or less.. depending on how quick you are ;)
last time, we set off at 9am from south Auckland, and most were back in auckland around 3.30/4.. a few of us (me included) turned back and did the best bits again, and got back to auckland at 5.30
Probably a couple of hours in total of stops.
KF, why don't you go anti clockwise, then go back again from Coromandle?
That what we did last weekend and just loved all the twisties..
I'll have to see nearer the time, if I can go. Bit broke at the mo!

Yep, round the coromandel loop,
one day trip (its not all that far),
will stop for lunch (in coro prolly) and refreshments/smoke breaks quite often.
I also plan to sit on the side of the road at some point and take pics of any bikes that might be with me, was so pleased with trevs shots on the last ride, i thought id do the same for some others :)

it's just the east coast is peppered with 100/50/100/80/50/100k zones most of the way, and that's just boring. There's a few twisties as it goes from the coast up to the coro town, but there that and then some over the other side.. that's all.. just my 2¢
kiwifruit
13th March 2006, 13:16
ok, then we do the eastern side, from kopu thru to coro
lunch in coro then back again

Kopu to Coro road is shite at present with lots of road works/resealed pieces 1/2 across road & lots of loose chip on road.
Better of to do what some of you did last weekend and go back over hill from Coro to Whitianga and those from the South go back through Whangamata the rest back over Kopu- Hikauai.
Just my opinion.....the ride from Coro to Kopu was shite because of the loose crap.

Stay off of 25A. Don't know if it was there when y'all went through on saturday but today when I cam through there was a section that was nothing but gravel and fist sized rocks. Right in the midst of the twisties, like they had torn up the whole road section. Not pleaseant if you are on anything other than a off-road bike.
bugjuice
13th March 2006, 17:32
ah yeah, we did that.. just have to slow to 150 while passing that section. It's only a k or so, get over it.. ;)
Waylander
13th March 2006, 17:35
Nah mate this was much worse. Normally this stuff wouldn't worry me on my bike when going about 50Kmh but even that didn't feel very nice. My bike was wobbleing all over these rocks so your's would be... interesting.
kiwifruit
13th March 2006, 17:38

thats the bit from coro down the west coast ya?
I think i will be going round the other way to coro then back the same way....

Ok, who from Auckland is going and if so I take it we are meeting at the Shell Service station at Clevedon at 8.30 am to depart at 8.45am.
Then we meet the rest of the bunch at Kopu Service station, do the Coro anti clockwise but head back the same way from Coro through Whitianga again, right??
Should be ok to make and might be able to get some more together as well.

Cool,
I am assuming that the roadworks between Kopu and Hikuia will now be sealed and loose gravel everywhere. Can't avoid that but heading up to Coro on the East side through Coroglen is anticlockwise and IMHO the better way to go, which is what you are doing :)
The West Coast from Coromandel to Thames has some nice twisities BUT has a lot of areas of new seal in patches which just happen to be in the best bits and right in your riding line. So best avoid that side of the Coro and just head back the same way through Coroglen after lunch at Coro.
That's the best part anyway aye? :)
The group from South can head back through Whangamata if you want while us Aucklanders can head back through Kopu

beyond
17th March 2006, 07:23
Yes,
Aucklanders meet at Shell Service Station, Clevedon at 8.30am departing 8.45am to ensure early arrival at Kopu service station in order to meet the rest departing Kopu at 10.15am.
If you happen to miss the Clevedon rendevous, then make sure you are at Kopu service station at 10.00am or no later than 10.15 am.

You guys put on quite a show for the cagers and me then Kiwifruit seemed to catch the bug, and he started poping them everywhere.
Wish I had taken the helmet cam along now, would have been some great footage!
I think I might have to introduce you guys to my friend the Waioeka Goerge, might even up the odds abit.
I thought I saw KF doing a bit of practice on the way through:niceone:
Helmet cam sounds clever
Is that the gorge around Optoki?

To be honest, I don't think it's the speed he's interested in..... Could possibly have something to do with wheelies though???
I don't understand??
I seem to do them fine in first and you should see Death do KM long wheelies on his 97 SRAD 750 hahahahaha.....
Man I love hooliganism.....

Been wanting to do that road since I went through a year or so ago in the cage. Some sweet corners in the gorge man.

Effortlessly popping them up at 150k's+???
And from what I understand, Death is a freak of nature and can't be used as an example of your average man.

This is true.......
Never ridden a thou... so I can't comment on thier wheelie ability....
Saw you popping a few and was a little envious you being able to get it on the back wheel at high speeds.... Oh well....:eek5:

I wouldnt say Deaths 150kph pulling it up on the 750 effortless, man that thing sitting on the limiter in 3rd and tryiing to snap the clip ons off as he yanks it up, that man needs a 1000cc :shifty:
Bloody good ride guys, meet more than a few new faces, Lou, nice to meet ya finally, Beyond, heard the stories of some guy hussleing a GSX14 about, nice riding mate, KF, again good to finally meet you and r4q2, nice riding mate, and alll the others weasel, razzar(sp?) Finn and the rest, i knew i shouldn't of done the loop, but last minute, when the missus said she was working all day, got home at 1am from work, threw the front end back in the GSXR, bed at 3am back up at 8am and off for a wee play before i made my way to kopu.
I for one was pleased to see the roadworks up form Kopu, gonna be mint when it's finished in time for winter, man thats a crazy road in the wet i tell ya.
Shame not to catch up with 2much and Saul, next time eh.
Meet up with the fight club boys in coromandel and cruised off with them for a bit, i wouldn't of had time to go back through whitianga, i had work last night.
But yeah thanks for the company when i was stopped:Pokey: maybe catch you's out and about, the GSXR is going into race trim, so i'm not sure how much road riding i'll do for the time being?

Nah mate, I was talking about the ability to do that on a thou, not death doing it.
Never meet Death or seen him in action, but fuck me! if he can do that at 150k's on a 750?? That's damn impressive, he'ld do some serious damage with a 1000.

That was a bloody good ride, good to meet some of you finally. Thanks to beyond for showing what naked bikes can do
No thanks to the tosser heading up the hill before Coro, stuffed up the first three corners and then got worse. (Me)
Luckily I got all the rest reasonably right, the shiny bits stayed upright.
I've got to get rid of these Macadams, a new set of Z6's is waiting to go on.
Finn and I went back through Thames, there was a bit of gravel around but it wasn't too bad.

Was good catching up with you Lou.
I like your Bandit. It's a real nice looking machine.
Yep, some days ya riding can be spot on and for some reason turn to crap on a few corners. We all get that from time to time. But, I reckon you rode very well. We both know our bikes are no light weights either but they go real well when pushed considering.
I really have to work on my ground clearance issues. My side stand, front edge on the pavement foot, is half worn away along with the foot peg bolts. Some time I might get some 330mm Hagon rear schocks which jack things up a bit to get some more ground clearance.
I think you will like Metzler Z6's. They hang on real well. Not as good wear rates as the Michelin Pilot Roads but they should be good to you.

To right.... second corner after you passed me out of clevedon with bike cranked over and sparks flying was all I needed to stay a bit back (well that's my reason and i'm sticking to it)
My bike got lower today but then stuff started falling off:no: :stupid:

Yes was a bit of a tiring couple of days, arrived at work soaked, lucky I keep back up clothes at work!
Was my first time riding most of those roads and can see why it is so popular. Think I need to ride it a bit more to help improve my riding. ;)
Let me start with you KF, glad you organised the day, good effort for the early morning departure. Some great photos there, but I must say, where the hell do you hide that thing!! A few sneeky pics there 1 of which I owe you a :kick: for! Thats a shocker!:Pokey:

Go the wreckers...shouldn't be hard to find one for your model...failing that, aftermarket. Get from the US, or that Motostyle place in Mt. Eden seems pretty good, not much costlier than the US places on eBay.
