14th March 2006, 19:52
What: A quick romp in the Northern Valleys
When: Thursday night after work on the 16th March
Where: Meeting @ Shell Westgate (at the end of the North Western M/Way)
Why: Because there is more to motorcycling than just talking about it
Time: Meeting there from 6.30pm departing @ 7pm SHARP
- Not much daylight left now
Pace: Open to all - provided people do as instructed.........

The route will be discussed on the night. For those worried about distance/time the ride will last for approx 1hr and is 70kms long. We start at Westgate and finish up at the old Albany Pub. Even if you cant make the ride, how about joining us at the pub?

Remember this ride is WEATHER PERMITTING - I will post up in the thread if it is postponed due to weather. I will decide on the day and post after 5pm.

Hopefully I will have Custard with me this week and wont be running late.....

Good to see a big turnout - 26 bikes ended up at the Albany Pub :Punk:

Was a bit of a pick 'n 'mix ride - people got to chose which way they wanted to go in the second leg......... some went straight to the pub as others took the twisted longer route there. Unfortunately I have been working too hard (there is such a thing... lets say 60+ hours this week driving) so I wasnt up the usual standard of taking the lead and going 'bush'. I also had broken Custard on the back, hanging on for dear life with one arm........ ;)

No bins (yay!) no one lost (as far as I know of) and one big group of bikers drinking and eating chips having a good time. NICE. :2thumbsup

Daylight saving is happening this weekend so,........

Next week I will not be holding a ride, (I gotta have a break sometime...) however the Thursday Night Ride will recommence on the 30th March. Same time, same place. But it will be DARK so I would recommend changing those tinted visors to clear ones! Similar ride just at a slower pace. (unless you eat your carrots and have nightvision........:eek5: ) Will post up a thread in the next day or two. Thanks guys. :spudwave:

This week was a nice cruisey ride for me at least, it started off that way for everyone else but when one of the faster lot gunned it I guess 'race mode' kicked in and everyone else seemed to play catch.

Pity it wasn't as organised as last weeks ride, I came across a couple of empty intersections.

It was cool to see a few more Hyosungs there too!

The Koreans are coming!!

as always good to meet you lot. After about the second corner I figured I'd be having the slow ride from H@@@ as Boing did his best to throw me into the bush. --The ol kidneys are a bit sore right now.
sorry to keystone for the lil scare. Unfortunately boing was going round corners by using brute force and ignorance.

Paremoremo rd...200 meters of road works , down to one lane with traffic lights either end.
I was leading with a black buell close by, as we came up to the road works the light are red, we stop as does everyone else apart from one total fuckin idiot who shoots the red light at speed with no real idea of approaching traffic.
JSG you need rooting up the arse by an angry baboon, your actions constitute THE dumbest thing I think I have ever seen any one do on a motorcycle.
Pretty soon rides will revolve around "is that cocksmoker coming"
if so I will not be attending.

Thanks for letting me off tail end duty QKCHK. :niceone:

I thought this would be the last Thu night ride so came in my leathers with my mind in "blat mode".:yeah:

Thanks Frosty for slowing down for me and letting me follow your lines. You are an awesome rider being able to control a bike with such terrible suspension :first:

Thanks to all the others who turned up and made it a great night.

I'm glad there's no ride next week and I can have a slight break. The demons were starting to show their face tonight:Oops: .

Yeah, I ended up coming around a few corners to a pack of bikes travelling at a much slower pace. Then saw all the brake lights go on...... So I rode to the front only to see shit - It's a one lane. Since I was slightly above the speed limit, it was better that I continue until I see something coming in the other direction instead of panic braking. The darkness meant I had plenty of time to judge if there was someone approaching as I'd see their headlights. So I continued on safely. There were two cars patiently waiting at the other end at another red light.

It must have looked a bit scary to you guys, but it worked out alright.

Probably will be taking a break from KB rides and all rides for a while, them demons are getting too strong.

Cheers for the kind advice Black Buell.

Thanks Qkchk and everyone else.

I quite enjoyed the way the ride started slow and progressively sped up as I haven't been on a fast ride for quite some time and it was good to start getting back into the groove.

Good to start mingling a bit more at the pub.

Cheers guys,

JSG --I've avoided this conversation like the plague.
Lots of people myself included have talked to you about your lines and some of ya crazy stunts.
What REALLY fucks me off is when you choose to yo ride pretty darn well.
Keeping in mind I escorted ya on your first KB ride and you took 8 bites at one corner. Your riding now is a huge improvement.
Dude I see the brain disengaging and ya start to ride crazy man.
Tonight I was for the first time scared to open the throttle.
I could see you in my mirrors and the idea of you trying to keep up scared me shitless.
Please for ya own sake ease it down a notch. I promise you --if speed is what you want --It will come with time and practice.

SwanTiger
16th March 2006, 22:07
JSG, I think you need to get a slower bike, something around the 150cc mark that doesn't produce an aweful lot of power but can do 120kmp/h or there abouts. Then go out and practise keeping a smooth line, at first, start by trying to keep the bike upright and using only your line to get around the corner. Get faster and faster until eventually you start leaning the bike in, keeping a smooth line.

I know i've only been riding for just over a month, but there is a wealth of information to be found in books and on the internet about techniques and riding in general.

I've seen you on a few corners where you hang off the bike when there is no need, you don't even need to lean the bike over. You seem to go slow through the corners and then gun it in the straights (hence why I think a slower bike will be good for you).

But i'm sure everyone else would of already had the same advice to offer and you've probably been told a million times and are well aware of it all.

Anyone can go fast with a big enough bike.

I know what you're saying Frosty I have my good days and bad months......

Riding behind you tonight was at a managable pace. I have ridden with people like Zed and Bane (from Waikato) at a higher pace and did it well within my own control.

As I said I'm gonna take a break from group rides and ride a little bit slower now, I realise it's time to cool it for a while.......yes people I will take it easier now.

Thanks for the words ol' Fella, you know I luv ya like an older bro. Take it easy.

So improve on your cornering.

You can go ride with the Magneto's (No offence Texmo) if you want to feel like your faster than everyone else. Theres one way to sort out your 'speed' problem.

If you would like me to teach you what I know about cornering then I'd be happy to ablige if you think it will help improve your riding.

I am not about proving my self, I am about IMPROVING myself.

Today I'm not the fastest and one of the slowest 250cc bikes out there, however I am eager to learn and love to ride, so one day, I'm certain that i'll be as good as anyone else if not better. But always improving.

Sure, let me know which day next week you are free (as I'm busy all this weekend) and we can go play on the roads out around Managawhai and Omaha, where I know of a few special roads, one in particular that will blow your mind.

Cool I like roads that blow my mind. Till date the only ones I know are Cheenic Dwive  at night with no moon, the Opononi Forest road and the hills on the Coro Loop. SH22's ok - though it would be great without the gravel and wildlife.

If anyone wants to come let them PM you.

Probably next weekend 1st/2nd April is better.

We could have a sort of test time trial. How long you can ride without touching the brakes or how long can you maintain a set speed.

There's nothing wrong with my basic bike control. I know how to judge corners using vanishing points and which lines are meant for the road and which for the track.

Most of my problems arise from a right hand that doesn't like to relax and a brain that likes to follow suit.

I think that sounds like a good idea so long as you have the whole day to spend riding around and are happy to do so.

Two roads which I ride on a regular basis help with some of the most basic cornering techniques, so we can visit those first. After that we can go have a blat out on a few of the roads around Managawhai to finish the day off.

One of the roads is an extremely twisty hill climb witch near perfect tarseal that will train your lines and teach you to translate the corners. After a few runs up and down it your lines should be smoother.

The other is a long windy road, with near perfect tarseal again, this road will teach you cornering speed that will also help with your lines. Another thing you can imrpove on is hanging off the bike on corners and also how to build and maintain momentum.

Something to look forward to!

Just admit u made a mistake and were riding dangerously, be a man!

Yes, I was riding a bit quicker than I should of in the wrong places- my fault folks.

Strangely enough I didn't cut too many people off today or go round them on the outside on corners. Only thing was riding too fast for the conditions and mistaking the red light (which was not there last week) for a brake light, very stupid I know........ :stupid:

The ride with Frosty was a lot slower than the ride with you on Sat - the early stages when you, KiwiFruit and I were riding together.

Like you say them "demons" are overpowering you - you need a spiritual cleansing man, it's gotta be YOU in control of the bike! :eek5:

We could have a sort of test time trial. How long you can ride without touching the brakes or how long can you maintain a set speed.
what's that going to achieve?

I'd seriously advise against you passing on 'your riding technique' if you can't be safe and hold it together on the road yourself. You obviously have control and constraint issues which I think you really need to address.

And I'm sick of this shit 'i'm the slowest indian' and the 'most dangerous' and 'im still a newb' etc etc bullcrap, cos you've been riding for a lot longer than you make people think. What's really bad tho, is that these newbies are developing and leaving you behind. Now what does that say about you? I've always tried to avoid this confrontation shit, cos it just gets into a slanging match and people take sides, and gang up etc etc. I don't want that. I also don't want you passing on 'skills' to other people.

You continue to overtake on blind corners, you cut in front of people when over taking and narrowly avoid a collision with them, you sit right behind the leader, about 2 feet away, and you just have a distinct lack of consideration for anyone else on the road, be it bike, car, truck etc. Where's the fire? Where's the race?

The quick fix is your attitude. You acknowledge all this, then you just ignore it. And it's not a case of 'Oh, I get on the bike and forget'. Bollocks. People have been telling you the same thing for as long as I can remember. And nothing has changed.

Go back to the real basics. Take your race suit off (you really don't need it yet), keep your butt on the bike (ie - lean the bike, instead of you), stay within your lane (regardless of road or situation), think and watch at least 100m ahead at all times, stay at least 5 seconds off the rear of anyone at any time. There's probably a bit more to add, but for now, just at least think of this.

Oh, and stop passing it off as blarzé.. People are yelling at you for a good reason. Absorb and consume their advice. Some of your replies to others (and probably this), are just oozing with 'I don't give a crap', by avoiding the issue. Take responsibility for the way you ride, and change it. At the end of the day, you are in control (or lack of) the bike and your actions. No one makes the decision but you. Your actions of late (such as last night, blowing a red light on a single lane of roadworks) could have had the most dire consequences. Not just for you, but for everyone around you. Today would be pretty shit to read how you slammed yourself into a cattle truck coming the other way. But that's what we're all expecting. Funerals suck. And no matter how you spell it, there's no 'fun' in them. I don't want to be on a ride where you crash out and possibly take someone with you. I certainly don't want to be going to your funeral either. But this is how you're heading. For Gods sake, wake up and grow up. For everyones sake.
And please don't reply at all to this, if it's some smarmy fob-off comment. I don't want to know. If you're sincere, then everyone else will be.

It's time to take off the jester suit mate, do the right thing before it goes wrong. There's already a fair amount of people that won't go on rides you attend. I, for one, prefer to keep my distance, and watch in terror. I don't want to get tangled up. Just think about it, before you become the raggy ol' sheep no one wants.

And I'd say 'don't take this personally', but that's what I think half the problem is. You don't. People are saying this in hope something upstairs clicks. So read, absorb, think. Then we're all happy riders again

JSG...your actually a nice bloke.
WTF? This almost matches your quote from WINJA. Are you being kind to your fellow man because of a (valid) green plastic card in your wallet now?

I guess I'm biased - I only know JSG off his bike (never having ridden with him)... but yeah - he's a nice bloke.

Hey JSG, turn this on it's head. How bout we have a "bitch session". Get a couple of bods you trust - someone you value the opinion of, and sort this shit out.

Find what they think is going wrong, and what you think is going wrong, and start working on the most serious. We're all going to be better off, but the biggest winner is you. To be blunt - I hate funerals...

Do it over a couple of beers etc. It sounds like you have an idea of what's going wrong but can't (or won't) sort it for some reason. All good.

How 'bout you make a plan to change that?

The few beers would nede to be some guys and gals that aren't afraid to pull the punches, but that JSG respects (and nominates). It's best done offline I reckon - no need to make a song and dance about it.

I'd be happy to help but... as I say - I've never ridden with him.

I didn't mean loose the protection.. I know he has cordora gear, wear that instead of the power ranger suit.. There's no need for it, and it might help with the mentality thing

cheers tho Frosty..

Sure, let me know which day next week you are free (as I'm busy all this weekend) and we can go play on the roads out around Managawhai and Omaha, where I know of a few special roads, one in particular that will blow your mind.
