Hey, just noticed about 5 minutes ago on a ride home from some friends that the brake light on my bike has stopped working... I know it worked before, but I'm not sure if it stopped working when i binned my bike on sunday or what... it's a dual-light brake (like the cbr250rr's), and when it's on park light, both lights are on, and when you hit the brakes (normally), the lights go brighter, and the number plate light gets brighter too, that has stopped happening. does anyone know what i can have a look at to get it working again?

First thing would be to check that the cables are plugged in at all necessary points.

Had it on my 7, the front, brake light trigger comes unplugged, possibly because a whole bunch of leads foul the dash when turning the bars.

Is it non-working on both rear and front brakes. Try them one at a time. If it works for one but not the other, the switch or wiring for the non-working one is at fault. If neither work odds are you've blown the bulb or blown a fuse.

it never worked on the rear, and since i'm new to bikes i just gathered the rear brake doesn't make it light up. i checked the cable running from the front brake (right handlebar) and made sure the cables were connected properly (2 of them), they lead into the headlight (which i'll rip apart tomorrow probably). where abouts would the brake light fuse be (general area?)?

I had a crash and the filaments on half the indicators broke.

Had a bit of light drama just last week, front bulb and an indicator died and a terminal broke off. god my cheapo soldering is bad :)

Check both filements of the bulb and if unsure wire it directly to the battery to check it lights up. If it is the wiring then get one of those cheap testers, as it will make things a million times easier.

Probably blown bulb, change one and see, it might have blown as it would be hot when you crashed and blow easily with the big blow it took when you crashed if you know what I mean.

Well I've got a CBR250RR and the connection on the front brake stopped working, when you pull in the front brake it makes a slight click, that was where it engaged the brake light. I just unscrewed the switch off from beneath the front brake lever, and cleaned the connection in the switch with a bit of sand paper and it started working again... for a while. It then stopped again, so I sanded it some more, and its worked fine ever since.

thanks, i'll try that... managed to get my rear-brake brake light working (it's one of those mechanical pull down springs, not electrical), so the brake light does actually work, so it's obviously the connection to the front-brake...

Ok, I've found the problem... it all comes down to this little switch that sits here: picture #1, and looks like this: picture #2

i've tried cleaning it with some CRC 5-56, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything... anyone have any ideas?

closest I'll make to auckland is meremere dragstrip on the 7th/8th of April... I'll just rip apart the switch again (well, try to). Hopefully I can get it to work tomorrow. Any 'easy' ideas to get it to work? i gather the easiest thing would be to separate the metal part on the left, and the plastic bit on the right (refering to post #10, picture 2, up this page), although i couldn't work out how to do that...

I ended up buying a BMW brake switch from the bike shop on BP side of Te Rapa straight (can never remember the name...). Anyway, that's working perfectly fine now, so I'm happy :) ...well except for all the rain outside now :(
