heres a question for you welders out there. when using flux core mig with CO2 downhand do you push or pull your weld pool? I have already had conflicting advice so I may as well confuse it a bit more:lol:

I've never used flux core. With the MIG I generaly move the handpiece towards myself, with the arc I move forward, same with gas.The MIG is more versatile and I'll do all sorts of incorrect welding (vertical downs) with no worries.Pulling the handpiece backwards pushes the wire into the bead, pushing forward it's going into thin air.

Here you go.
This site may answer some of your question.
The push pull answer is at the bottom.

I myself push the nozzel so the gas is covering the area to be welded plus you weld over any splatter that my happen while welding . Power settings & gas flow a very important too . Keep the nozzel clean at all times . Have been welding for nearly 30 ys .

Looks like Eddie does it like me - I don't do welding under text book conditions,I just have to a weld that works.

i always pull and also spot weld cause i am kinda new to it and i found it easier to spot when welding thin stuff to thick stuff...
i'm still kinda messy at running big beads but when making up some new headers for my car - i found spotting worked quite well.
kinda like this.
(and those who can weld amongst you will probably laugh... but it was either have a go myself or pay somebody $700 each to make up the two manifolds...)

thanks guys had a bit of a play this morning before sitting my ticket. found that pushing gave me better penatration so thats what I went for. will tell you if it worked in about a week when the x-ray is marked.

well I got my test resalt back the other day. I pushed my root run and secondary run for penatration and pulled my capping run cos there was less/no undercut. passed so it seams it dosn't matter if you push or pull.

I wont use the stuff, only use argoshield and real wire. Each to their own i guess. (and i have the advantage of being able to charge consumables out to the client, +10%)
