hi, I've not posted here for a while, but it is getting closer (about 2 months) to when we move over to NZ, and I am wondering what lid laws you have. I've been thinking about getting a new lid before we leave here, but then it occurred it may not be legal. So can someone point me in the right direction of what standards they have to comply to etc, either that or should I just wait till I get there to get a new one?

if your in the UK, your pound would probably be able to buy a new helmet here for about the same as shipping your existing one over in a box!

are you just coming for a vacation or moving over long termish?

helmets start here from around $150 nzd for a not to shabby one up to 600-700 for a nice Shoei...

we are coming permanently, shipping isn't a problem as we are taking a 20 foot container and still have space in it, even taking our 2 bikes with us.
I was looking at a caberg justissimo lid, with the flip face and and interior flip down dark visor, the best deal I can find here is for £135

hmm, havign done a quick search, I can't find any caberg lids for sale in NZ, I guess buying that particular on there, wouldn't be possible.

So what brands that are available there do a flip face lid with an interior separate flip down dark visor?

What?

Nolan do a hat like that - N102.

I have never heard of a Caberg, so you probably won't get visors here.

Do a bit of Google searching for prices - a new hat may be considerably cheaper in England than here, or may be quite similar, depending on the brand. Use www.google.co.nz and www.google.co.uk so you can filter for results from each country only.

Laws on helmets are not a worry, except that you can not race with an imported helmet - for competition you need the NZ Standards sticker.

EC certification is accepted here. The visor comment is very true, if you break yours you'll have a long wait for a new one.

I have tried the nolan, however it doesn't fit my shaped head, and started to hurt after only a few seconds.

I take your point about not being able to get visors, I hadn't thought of that, however I have never needed to replace mine on my arai yet and it is coming up to helmet replacement time (maybe cos I am a girl and I am gentle with it, I don't know :) ) either that or I just refuse to pay for another fog city insert. plus if necessary, it would be easy enough to get one posted, they aren't exactly heavy.

I don't think racing rules on helmets would be a problem either, I used to ride silly speeds, but these days prefer poddling along looking at the scenery I certainly won't be stepping foot on a race track (that and wow what scenery you have over there!!)

What brands of helmet are common in NZ? someone has mentioned Shoei, what about others?

whilst I am at it, what are the laws regarding visors? Knowing the more relaxed attitude to most things in NZ, you are probably laughing at the question, but here, unless the visor is removable (like the caberg I mentioned ), you cannot wear very dark visors and if you are pulled up for something, you will be charged if they notice your visor, believe me.

I've just done a quick google, and that nolan lid, is advertised at $239!!!!!!! which is around £83 about half the price of the same one here!!

OK, maybe worth waiting.

Remember that any overseas lid cannot be used for racing though.

The N102 is $NZ575.
My N101 had a tight spot on the forehead area, a little moulding fixed that.
We don't have visor laws here. But if you bin at night and they can allege a dark visor contributed, you could face a careless charge.

.

oops sorry, just rechecked the page I had and although I only did a search on google nz, the company was actual in the states. That means it is actually 33% more expensive, probably better to get one here then.
I prefered the caberg as the visor is internal not external like the nolan, and it also comes down further and it is slightly lighter in weight.

didnt take you long sniper!

wrt to helemet standards, NZ laws never refer to a paticular standard in general, our bikes reflectors for example have to have some standard printed on them, any old one they dont care, the same goes for helmets on the road.

Au contraire. LTNZ has a list of acceptable worldwide standards.
ie. DOT is not accepted unless the helmet is made in the US.

Arai, Shoei, HJC, Nolan, Suomy, FFM, Bell and probably more. From my subjective observation Arai and Shoei are probably the most widely available "high-end" lids.

PS - Nice approach with the cops Sniper, I just read the thread. Big thumbs up on how you handled that. Being honest I would probably have hid behind a sarcastic letter and then have to go to court...

heck, just read the visor thread.
I cant believe that a UK guy attempted to apply a UK law!!

(PS we arent all that bad, and I am not a cop!)

It was a misunderstanding on his part, but it was frustrating at the least.

Here's a link to the Land Transport NZ site (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/road-user-safety/motorcyclists/gear-and-clothing.html)where it lists the acceptable helmet standards.

Answers to other questions about the legal aspects of riding and licensing will also be found on the site (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz).

As an aside, personal accident/injury insurance is provided by a state agency called the ACC (http://www.acc.co.nz) and is compulsory and they have funded this Ride Forever (http://www.rideforever.co.nz/)website.

at the prices you can score decent bike gear at the BMF show in Peterborough you could buy a heap of gear and flick it on and make money when you get to NZ

you should be taking orders now

yeah right, I have only been there once, and after having been charged £8 to park the car (I was planning on buying loads of bargains and had a couple of mates with me), then having paid a silly amount to get in and queued at least an hour, I ended up saving myabe £2 on a bike cover. There were no real bargains to be had.
That and it took me 9 hours to get home from Birmingham

the M6 was closed due to an accident and there was thick fog which meant when I finally got back on it, max speed was about 30mph and I had to drop a mate of at Manchester.

that explains the 9 hours then

seriously buy some decent kit before you go to NZ the choice there is somewhat limited and expensive

and dispite what the travel brochures say it rains more in actual rainfall in nz than the uk and you will need good wet weather gear

fortunately my kit is not that old as I had to replace some of it when I had an off, it is just a lid that I could do with.
