We've been on the Orcon 256/128kbps flatrate plan for the last year or two, can't quite remember.
This costs us $49.95/month.

We've just recieved an email saying that because of "changes in our [Orcon's] wholesale broadband supply from Telecom" they've had to increase the price of their flatrate 256/128kbps plan to $109.95/month!
They're trying to move all the flatrate 256/128kbps customers over to a plan capped at 40GB/month (should be enough for us). But this will be at a $10/month price increase to the previous flatrate plan and the speed will stay the same, which is fairly slow by broadband standards.

I guess all that faster/cheaper internet hype was a pile of rubbish :crybaby:

Yep telecom run the show, until they unbundle the local loop they will continue to rape the consumer for large profits for their shareholders.
Move to Aussie or any other civilised? country and get internet 12x faster than us for less.

Email your local MP with that info, the Govt aint to pleased with the shit telecon is doing. The way Telecon announced lower prices the day before Aunty Helens speech, coupled with their blackmailing of the Govt last year has them a touch pissed off.

Oh and avoid telecon anyway you can, I got wireless internet, hence NO phoneline, if telecon continues on this path of being wankers more people will come over to the light and disconnect from the loop altogether,

For what it's worth, we're on a Ihug plan - 20 gig @ 2 mps for 49.95 per month with tolls.

I had a quick look earlier this week after watching an artical on sunday (TV1) and it seemed if anything, broadband was slightly faster / cheaper over here (compared with Australia).

I'm not convinced that the situation is as bad as it is made out to be.

looking at their plans (which I assume are up to date) ( http://www.orcon.net.nz/products/bitstream/newplans/ )
why don't you just go with a cheaper plan instead of the flat rate? do you really chew thru that much in a month? And do you have tolls with them?

Telecom are bastards. They're doing it, cos they can. And most others probably would if they could. That's the problem with having all the toys in the cot, and not having to share. The govt is aware, and is doing something about it, but the amount of shit that goes on, and what Telecom spew, just drags things out. Things like this 'faster cheaper internet' isn't because they've just done something new for the market, it's cos the govt has started to lean on telecom, and telecom know if they don't 'show to be making an effort' soon, then they'll get busted up. So all they've done is just kicked the door open a little more to let more light in. It's still mostly closed, but hey, we can see more light, so that's ok.. isn't it..??

Nothing new there unfortunately. Same thing happened to me except that there was a huge balls up on mine that took 5 months to sort out. Apparently I had a fault that prevented me from logging into an upgraded (more expensive with a lower threshhold ...... upgraded eh??) account because there was a fault on my line ...... there wasn't a fault as I was sitting there on a adsl connection happily downloading the internet for 5 months. Useless pack of wankers.

You have probably read about mine before . I pay for 100mbps and GET 33mbps ,with no cap and its dropped to 20 on occations , That like buying a car with only 3 wheels and sometimes 1 falls off. Thats robbery ( NTT)

The laptop uses a 64k wireless card , that not wifi but uses PHS phone lines , its always connected if a bit slow. So you can down load stuff while say driving

As for say NZ is as good as Australia ...99 % of that place is desert , No wonder its ONLy the citys that have high speed connections. I cracked up when I read that on ( from the business round table I believe)

The thing is with the faster speeds you can watch on demand advert free telly . , cheap if not free phone calls ...Skype for example you can use a pda to call,

Bye Bye telecom .... you waste of space and how any one can justify paying ANYONE that sort of money , needs there head examined. ( Joey Dunlop I doubt was on the pay packet rossi is )

But I on the other had would be quite happy with half GBs pay for consulative services supplied,

The speed isnt the problem, its the data caps.

Admittely I'm a heavy user, but on average I do between 40-70gb a month on a 256k flatrate plan. Given that the theoretical max for a 256 connection is onl 80 something gb a month, I think I do pretty good.

But to scale it up, if I had a 3.5mb/s connection I'd potentially need 500-800gb a month. Cant see that happening any time soon :-) Not to mention I'd REALLY bankrupt myself buying blank dvd's (omg roll on blueray omg)

Okay just recieved an email from orcon regarding a few questions i had asked
'
The 40gb limit is the upload and the download combined.'

'Also you are not on any contract with us.If you want to disconnect.

Go online to our website at http://www.orcon.net.nz/products/bitstream/existingcustomer/ and fill out the cancellation form (Cancel my Bitstream).

Please note and understand the following:

- You will continue to be billed for up to 45 days for the Bitstream service. How long this is depends on the service billing cycle that Telecom has flagged your DSL line on.
- You will receive an email from our Provisioning team to the email address you nominate, and must reply to this email or your order will not be actioned.
- You should receive the Confirmation to disconnect email within a maximum of two working days.
- If you have not received an email from our Provisioning team after 3 working days, you should get back in touch with us. This is your responsibility, and Orcon will not take responsibility for lost messages.

If your would like to view a full copy of the terms and conditions please click on the following link: http://www.orcon.net.nz/help/terms'

45 days to disconnect when it only takes 7-10 days to connect. Which i think is bullshit

I am personally thinking of heading back to ihugs 2meg 20gb plan, What really annoyed me with orcon plan is that they didn't speed the plan, i could understand putting a cap or raising price, but if you do these things you should at least put the speed up.

But you are right thats the price that they charge ..so you must pay , BUT if you dont like it you dont have to lump it. COMPLAIN to the parliment.

We have no reason to accept anything in this country, thats why we live in one of those Democracy things by theory our opinions should be heard by the government and acted upon.

And should NZ be held in the dark ages while the rest of the world leaps ahead technologically Inline? All because one company has become addicted to its multi billion dollar profits?

Y'see a few years back I would have agreed, but now I realise it's not the case.

The raison d'etre for a publically traded company is to make money for it's shareholders. Now, Telecom (starting with Ms Gattung's reign) has realised that trying to make money from competing in telecommunications is a mugs' game and that they'd be much better off lobbying, hoodwinking and generally making the NZ government look like the bunch of lamer twats they are ... hence being one of the very few countries in the world without ULL and with pretty well all our government services being tied in to Telecom's ... ummm .... shit.

Because it is shit. As a provider of telecommunications services they are lame beyond all description. But as a machine for extracting money from the Kiwi public and passing it over to their investors it is finely tuned, well maintained and doing it's job perfectly.

Not alot. We will whinge and nothing will change? Probably. Don't get me wrong, I agree with what your saying and I have a strong dislike for telescum. But at the end on the day, the only true way to sort telescum out is for the Govt to unbundle the phone lines. Then, we will see some changes. Hopefully with telescum continuing to rape NZ consumers, the unbundling will happen sooner...:ar15:

24th March 2006, 16:23
unbundling won't happen any time soon. As long as Telecom continue to blackmail the govt and commissioner, everyone else can go to hell, in their opinion. So what if NZ is falling behind. So what if NZers want faster cheaper internet.. Telecom is investing tons of cash in the economy. If they're broken up, then NZ will loose out.

That's their pitch anyway. So until the govt grows some hairy plums, not a lot will change. Telecom will just keep the govt happy with 'advances in technology' like the limit on broadband released, ever so slightly..

I don't doubt their ability to extract money from the good kiwi public but having worked for them, as a contractor, a lot of their staff are generally overpaid and unproductive and they are happy to throw money at customers to mask a problem rather than solve it.

Finely tuned they are not.

This is probably because of Telecom's Predictive Bandwidth Estimation Methodology (PBEM).

Basically, bandwidth availability on broadband decreases as the line quality deteriorates. So, at a certain point you reach the point where Telecom consider that the bandwidth available may not be adequate for the client's requirements. If their estimation is that the bandwidth they can supply will be inadequate , they will not provision a broadband capability. From their point of view it is better customer relations to tell you upfront that they can't do it, rather than putting it in and then having you complain about the speed being slower than dial up.

Of course, the key to this is the estimate of the client's bandwidth requirements. Telecom have automated tools to determine this. What they do is look back at your previous browsing history. They have found that the greatest bandwidth load, by far, is imposed by downloading porn. Heavy downloaders of porn require far more bandwidth than other people. And those who are into gay porn use far more bandwidth than straight porn viewers (no idea at all why this is - I know *nothing* about gay porn, go ask Telecom).

So, in your case, Telecom have assessed the bandwidth requirement of your neighbour, and consider that it is likely to be much less than yours. In other words, the broadband quality in your area is sufficient for your neighbour's requirements, but not for yours. Perhaps your neighbour is a nun? Or a very old lady? Or perhaps , based on the above, there is some other reason why your predicted bandwidth requirement should be very high. I'm sure I couldn't say why.But it seems Telecom know something. :devil2:
