View Full Version : Why is it?
Hailwood

I am interested to get some views on this question...I was riding up the Rimutaka hill the other weekend and pulled into the top for a stop and a look at the bikes. Hopped off the bike (helmet still on) and a guy walked over to me and started ranting about "what the f%%k is with you Harley riders and their attitude?" I removed my helmet and said Hi, sorry what was that? He repeated it and abused me for having an attitude. A little bemused, i asked him what did he mean? He went to rant about Harley guys wanting to be gang members because we all wear black leather and think we are hard men. I smiled (it is worth mentioning here that he had a Rossi replica helmet, full race leathers with hump and sliders, race boots and race gloves). I asked him was he on his way to Manfield or Pukekohe for a race? He looked a bit bemused...I said well it seems to me that you are dressed like a racer so you must be one or are you just trying to look like one? He stalked off with a few more obscenities....I am well aware that there are dickheads who ride Harleys who think they are hard men or better than other people but there are just as many dickheads who ride other bikes who think they are Rossi or the next best thing. What is it with people? I know the softail doesnt go round corners as well as an R1 but so what? I know it doesnt do 250kph..so what? I ride because its fun..isnt that why we ride? Just curious to get people's views....

Well I have a theory.
I reckon all sports bike riders that DONT want a Harley, have little peckers and secret fantasies about rough man sex in seedy public toilets. And that's why they don't wave at HD riders.

Perhaps he was behind you but couldn't get past cause you were to quick for him? :)
Bike riders are bike riders, who really cares what they ride as long as its two wheels...

Interesting theory there White Trash.
Hailwood, there are all types.. I'm not particularly interested in cruisers, but then again I dont rant and rave that they the bottom of the heap or anything similiar.. everyone have there own likes and dislikes, it appears that this guy was trolling for a reaction from you.. but didn't get what he wanted and thus stalked off. Your'll find a few more of those types (from all sides) that feel they've been slighted for some reason or other.. and want to have a go and vent there frustrations..

Sure is. Unfortunately, riding a bike doesn't guarantee that a person isn't a jerk.
When I started riding, I was taught that one of the cardinal sins is dissing another bikers ride. Good natured piss taking is one thing but slagging's not on.
It's a matter of respect for each other. Simple. Never ridden a Harley m'self, prolly not my style, but I can't understand why some folk have such a hang up about them.
As to corners, an old guy once told me a well kept secret for making any bike go round corners safely. You just slow down. Simple.
FWIW, I wear black leather , just cos I don't like the look of the coloured stuff . Don't have any ambitions to be a hard man.
Not sure why, but the old biker respect for one another seems a bit strained these days.

Seems like a very emotional reaction to something. Maybe he had a bad experience with an HD rider as a child?

The world just seems to be getting more stressed out and aggro, or I'm getting older and more chilled. Maybe both....
Hailwood, please don't judge all sport bike riders from this guys attitude (though there are more like him). Just like a lot of us don't judge Harley riders by what they ride. Admitted a lot do though, but if people are shallow enough to judge some one on what bike they ride then my care factor is zero. Just like it is for riders (harley or not) who don't return a friendly wave or nod. A zero care factor causes no stress.
I have a newbie mate on a GN250 who commented that he was surprised how many harley riders have waved to him on the motorway.... Not sure why he's not expecting them too, through experience or what other people tell him....
PS - I've had a similar experience on a cbr600 stopping for gas at the same time as a bunch of harley riders, so I guess it goes both ways..

sounds like he was after abit of trouble haliwood.
He is lucky you are not the stereotype he thought u were,
then he would have gotten more than just outwitted.
Don't worry about him and folks like him,
as far as im concerned it matters not what you ride, as long as you enjoy it.

hmmm...sounds like a arrogent son of a giraffe...
I think he was trying to ask [in the wrong way as he obviously told rather than asked] why harley and alot of cruzer riders don't wave back to sports bike riders...I used to wave at cruzers all the time but gave up aftr a while coz they all ignored ya and you feel like a twat...but ocasionally you get caught out by the odd one that waves and you don't expect it...
But we all have our own personal percieved image of who we like to think we are when we are out in society...with what we wear and how we act...which is kinda good in a way...coz you can size someone up pretty quick and decide if its someone you wanna know or not...

I'm not a great Harley fan myself (probably just because I can't afford one) but there's no need for that sort of shit.

I always used to nod to Harley riders when I was on sprotsbikes, and of course got snubbed by 99% of them. I bet the moron in the Rossi leathers had virgin knee sliders, am I right? Interesting that GN250 riders get waved to. I'm buying one of those, will be interesting to see if I lose my pariah status with the HD boys.

Get with the program, man. NZ metrificaterised years ago. You've gotta make it "within 0.0254 mtr of his life" nowdays. Give 'em 0.0254mtr and they'll take 1609 mtrs.

Thanks for restoring my faith in real motorcyclists.. :2thumbsup his knee sliders were cleaner than my bike....not sure why some HD boys dont wave back either...but then the number of wavers seems to be in decline anyway..but lets not start that old thread again....
See you all out there...I'll be the one in the black leathers on the Harley..easy to spot...lmao...but I do wave back.....

Maybe naked bikes are a good inbetween thing because I get waves from Hardley riders, gang members, sprotbikers, all sorts. Some Hardleyistas wait for you to wave first.
But I've noticed a lot fewer sprotbikers waving or perhaps I just missed the nod.
Reactions slow as you age I guess.

My little socialising rules of thumb.
First rule: All bikes are OK. If they ride a bike they're OK.
Second: If a rider proves to be a prick, the bike it is still OK.
Third: Ignore the prick and admire the bike.
Forth: Return to first rule for the next encounter of the bike kind.
Just keep moving right along and enjoy your day. :ride: John.

Life's too short to spend too much time mulling over why some people are total twats.

This was a prime time to practice your head butt skills followed by some dance practice.
You should of knocked the cunt on his arse and stepped on him till he stopped moaning. As to HIS problem, apart from not having enjoyed a REALLY good kicking from somebody that enjoys their work, is that he's exactly what he's complaining about. That goes for most of his type, the brand of bike they ride has nothing to do with it.The things they complain of in others are often more true of their own personaltys.
Actualy I can't work out why you even bothered talking to the prat,if it had happened to me when I owned my Shovel I would of said nothing,an just smashed the dick.

Good on you for keeping your cool in that situation and managing to match the dickheads witt, or maybe I should say his lack of. It annoys me sometimes to have other people who ride sportbikes saying I should get a "Real" bike or making fun of the Hyosung brand.
I imagine it is the same in all areas, you get dickheads and then you get the real motorcyclist who admire bikes - plain and simple.
However it has its good points as cowpoos mentioned, it makes it easier to pick the people you want to be associated with.

My 10 year old daughter has watched to much TV, and told me when we were in the car at the lights, "look, theres some destiny church people". I asked how she knows where these people are, she said " those guys on the Harleys".
Now I dont know about you, but which affiliation would a Harley rider prefer....
Gang member or church member.
It is quite amazing how some people will lable you before they meet you based on what you ride.

well put dickheads like the one mentioned should get out of motorcycling and find themsleves some other fashionable hi profile leisure activity because there is no room for them in the biking community
