View Full Version : Oil use on a CBR1000

Finn
17th March 2006, 08:23
It's a 05 done 6000 k's. Before going for a quick ride last night, I checked the oil and couldn't see any! The oil level was below the glass thingy. I must have put about a litre in it. I've heard litre bikes can go through oil but I was surprised how much. I hope I didn't do any damage to it.

Is this the norm? I have "topped" it up before but must have been remiss.

Funny you should mention this Finn.. I did the exactly same thing to my
TL1000s the other day.. checked the oil.. and couldn't see anything on the glass level.. panicked abit as I had just recently erm.. blew some cobwebs outta the ol girl.. and promptly topped her up.. with over a litre. These past couple of days, she seems fine.. though prolly abit more a tick (suspect the tensioner).. was told its fine. heh. Thinking of taking her for a proper service as I don't really know what the hell I'm doing.

Did you check it after 5 minutes or so? with the bike level?

I guess the quality of oil these days is pretty good as long there is some in there. Besides you'd think the oil light would go on if it was dangerously low.

Yeah, I warmed it up first then let is settle for a few minutes before filling. Did the same once I topped it up.

DemonWolf

Yeah same here.. No warning light.. so thought it should be alright. But ya just never know!

Got the manual and followed the instructions.. warm bike up.. turn it off and wait a minute then check oil level. heh had to fill it up twice.

SimJen
17th March 2006, 08:46
Warning light is usually oil pressure best not to wait for that to come on ;)
My sis didn't bother topping her car up till the light came on.......when she told me, I checked it and there was nothing on the dipstick and it took over 2 litres to top up........who knows what damage it caused? Crazy girl.
Most bikes will use a bit when new, hopefully it will settle down once the bores and rings bed in.
Lots of high revs will use more.

Check it cold finn, first thing before you start it. You DID lift it off the side stand, didn't you?

Cajun
17th March 2006, 16:14
6000ks isn't it due for another service by that stage.?

I would be worried if it is drinking oil already. Are you running fully, semi or mineral oil still?

I know some bikes drink some brands of oil. eg an old bike of mine use to drink motul put anything else in it was fine. If you had recently changed the oil it could be this, or could be something else, but i would be keeping a close eye on it for the next 1000kms at least.

You have topped the oil up before, that seams strange. If you are topping oil up on a new bike. i could understand in the first few kms, less than 1500 but any more than that its going somewhere, is exhust smoke a bit more than it short, or smell a bit oily.

We have never needed to top up oil on any of the bikes we have brought between services, vtr1000f, bmw k1200rs, zx10r, gsxr600, hayabusa, bandit 600.

I checked it first when it was cold and couldn't see any oil. I then warmed it up, shut it off and waited - still no oil. I'll keep an eye on it over the weekend.

Perhaps you could check it for me tomorrow Lou? The glass level indicator is quite low so you'll have to bend right over...

Finn I did 22000km on my 04 CBR1000RR. I never had the level drop below the window but I did top it up a few times. Checked it before and after a track day and it would need maybe half a litre. A full litre is a fair amount to lose though? I notice the 636 seems to need more checking than the CBR so I reckon it's the norm. It's an indestructible Honda so you can't hurt it anyway.

I just checked it and it appears overfull. I'll wait till it cools down and drain some out. I was in a hurry this morning and put too much in.

Can happen. Over gentle running in glazes the bores, oil control rings never get a chance to do their stuff.

Did you guys ever see the videos from the 2000 open bike shootout from Motorcycle Online? On the dyno run all the bikes let out large puffs of blue smoke as they were winding down from full throttle. I don't think I've ever owned a bike that hasn't used a little bit (and one that used a lot - RC30).

I don't follow the guidelines when running in new engines. I gave it who's your daddy after about 100 k's of varied riding.

The engine is cool now and I've marked where the oil level is. I'm going for a decent ride tomorrow and will check when I return.

I'll post the good or not so good news then.

If it has shit itself maybe this is my opportunity to get one of those fucking Suzuki's.

From the MCN messageboard:

My Blade has done just over 4000 miles and is currently in for a service, i have asked the dealer to look at the front as i get the same juddering under low speed breaking. I have also complained about the high oil consumption of 1 litre for 1500 miles?? Any body else had these probs.

Sounds like you haven't got the only one.

HONDA BUILD QUALITY IS A MYTH , I FIGURED THAT OUT WHEN I MADE THE MISTAKE OF BUYING A BRAND SPANKING NEW BLADE.
I THINK MOST JAP BIKES ARE SIMILAR THESE DAYS BUT IF I HAD TO CHOOSE I THINK THE YAMAHA R1 LOOKS LIKE THE BEST QUALITY FIT AND FINISH , PROLLY STILL WOULDNT BUY ONE

Dunno much about Hondas build quality, but when the litre bikes are side by side, the Honda sure looks the 'most expensive'. Yummy details like that gorgeus swingarm, if the build quality isn't there, it sure doesn't look it.

do you stand the bike upright (pull it off the side stand) when you check? You know that glass indicator is for when the bike is effectively on a pit stand and level, not lent over on the kick stand...

Yeah, I warmed it up first then let is settle for a few minutes before filling. Did the same once I topped it up.

Warming the bike up should make the oil level in the sight glass drop, 'cos it's all circulating around instead of sitting down there.

Overfilling is a big, big no-no. In my younger days (ok I'm still in my younger days, but have learnt now), I overfilled my CBR250 by about 2 litres, thinking that 'cos the stuff just kept going in, it needed more...ooops, it wouldn't rev past 13k rpm no matter how hard you twisted the throttle, and was overheating like crazy...and was like this the whole way from Akl to Rotorua. stuck the bike on its side and drained the excess out of the same hole it went in to, and she ran like a dream for the next 20,000 kms...bullet proof little bikes.

Mobil Racing 4T $67.00 inc for 4 litres. Cheapest synth bike oil around.
I think the car version is factory fill for Porches. :msn-wink:

Blackbird
20th March 2006, 11:50
I used to use Mobil 4T racing but stopped using it 2 years ago as a safety precaution. It might have been perfectly ok but Honda don't actually recommend the use of full synthetics according to the UK Blackbird boys. Something to do with the possibility of some sort of deposits forming in oil galleries but I can't add more than this. Honda recommend semi-synthetics so I switched to Motul 5100 and have stuck with it for nearly 3 years.

Fishy
20th March 2006, 12:31

He's a bit of a blind bastard at times aye BJ, so don't be offended if he rolls on by and doesn't see you jumping up and down waving on your bike. This one time we were waiting for him at the Wellsford pub, about 6 bikes on the side of the road and he just rocked on past :eyepoke: Then again, one orange (with that light gold hue in it, so hot) sex3sex will probably draw more attention than that day's ensemble.

from my experience never run a bike in, you will glaze the bores, also when reboring hone with the coarsest stone available

and for really good results run in with the cheapest crapiest oil you can get, modern oils are too good and rings will not bed on very slippery oil

just avoid full throttle use for until the first oil change
