You know, sometimes the weirdest things happen when you are doing the simplist of jobs.

Its well past time I did my oil filter - I've been lazy and just changing the oil, and I decided to get the oil filter when I changed the oil.

My RF is a 1995 model (RS1) first registered in 1996.

I've got the Service Manual for the RF and it's a piece of cake to do the oil and filter - especially compared to my FZR750.

I got the filter this morning from TSS and came home to change the filter.

Well bugger me - the filter in the box is a paper element type and the one on the front of the bike's a spin-on.

Front of the box says For RF900R R/S (1994/5).

So, I ring up TSS and speak to Richard.

"Hi Richard - you gave me the wrong filter mate"
"SorrySimon, we gave you the filter for a 1994/5 RF900R"
"But mine has a spin-on"
"Well it's not a 1994 or 1995. More like a 1996 or 7"
Hmmm. "Well can I stop by and swap it then"
"Sorry mate - we're closed for the day"

aaaargggghhhh - oil filter is off - oil is drained. I'm not putting the old one back on.

"Its okay mate - I'll stop by on the way over the takas and drop it off"

PRIMO!!!

So the oil change is all done, and the bike, and me are very happy.

Excellent customer service TSS. Much appreciated.

But one thing still eludes me.

Why do I have a 1996 or 1997 engine in my 1995 model bike?

go figure...

Sounds like another excuse for Richard to go for a ride over the hill so I'm sure he loved it.

Me, I change my filter every time I change the oil, can't see any point putting clean oil through a dirty filter for the sake of $20 or so.

Ah... TSS. That's how I know my next new bike will be a Yamaha.

You don't! I have the same model, the 95 RS1, also first registered in 1996. It has a spin-on filter too. The service manual and the parts microfiches only show a spin-on filter for all models.

I've noticed previously that the Vesrah catalogue (http://catalog.vesrah.co.jp/list/street_oil_filter.asp)lists a cartridge filter for the RR and RS models. Other manufacturers such as HiFlo only list a spin-on filter (http://www.hiflofiltro.com/17.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=1224)for all models.

My guess is that TSS were working from a Vesrah catalogue? Unless there's some difference between early models for different markets?

MacD - you got it in one - it was indeed a Vesrah filter.

Glad that's cleared up.

Cheers to Richard for going the extra mile with service.

First time user last fortnight to get very well priced Pirelli Speed Demons on both wheels of the GSX600F. Friendly and willing to check out a few things for me without any hassles and even allowed to wait in the workshop so I could see the work been done. I can get things done over a long lunchtime as they are only 15 mins ride from the WN CBD.

I think the fact that the guys at TSS get out and ride with their customers, from all walks of life etc. shows that they are firstly motorcycle enthusiasts.
As a result of this they seem to be enthusiastic about others enjoying motorcycling too.:niceone:

Just wish their monthly rides could do away with the ambulance patronage of late. Not their fault!!

Until the LTSA stop losing my CBTA applications, I'm just a tire-kicker (and I admit it in shops).

...but "the guy" at TSS was still happy to talk to me for a while, and gave me good advice for my level.

He even recommended a bike sold by a competitor (ER6) - which makes me more willing to actually buy from TSS.

(Motomart staff, by comparison, made me feel uncomfortable just by the way they looked at me...)

Cheers,

(Do the "bike shop people" read Kiwibiker?)

(Edited: BIG apology to Motorad; while they've not made me feel particularly welcome either, it was Motormart that gave me the creeps)

TSS do. Hey Stew.

They spent an exhorbanent amount of time entertaining my questions knowing that I may very well go somewhere else to buy a bike. And I did dammit.

Yeah totally agree, the service at TSS rocks. Just had rear tyre replaced with Pirelli by them and it rocks. Sat in waiting room with coffee and bike mag, tried some bags on my bike. Richard gave me a good deal.

My next bike will come from them (new R6 or Late used CBR I think). When I was tyre kicking 250s Fergus let me test a few and decent rides too. A lot of other shops didnt want to know after I said 250.

Some places were good but TSS is the best.

I love believe their Pirelli prices and yes great service. They remind me of the 'old' days of been able to bowl into the bike shop on saturday in Whangarei Motocat and check out the workshop in the 1970's on the old ts185 ..

TSS are now Michelin Agents and they are stocking Pilot Powers. So I'll be going there for my tyre changes.

TSS are also offering to service Suzuki Bikes within Suzuki Warranty requirements. Hence, no official Suzuki Licenced workshops required now.
I guess that means I don't have to keep taking my Zooki to Masterton for its services.
