Does anyone know of a company that provides towing coverage for motorcycles. Here in the states we have a number of options to select from.

I'm returning to NZ latter this year and will be touring on my own. The last time it was with an organized tour where they provided a follow truck with trailer. This time I'll be on my own with my own bike (left it there from last tour) and would like to know that I can get towed to a shop if things go wrong.

To be honest. Touring NZ you are never far from anywhere. towing insurance huh? Seems like a complete waste of money to me. If you break down or crash then someone will come along to help you out. Kiwis are good like that.

Hi Toybox,

You probably want to check out the AA Plus option. Normal membership is about $90 in Auckland, or $77 if you're living outside Auckland. AA Plus is an additional $45 on top of that.

I have no idea if this covers bikes or not... but I don't see why not. I can't think of anything else that might offer what you're after.

I do know Kiwi's are great people but I also know I traveled a lot of roads last month that were more than a few km from a dealer. I'd hate to brake down in Milton Sound and have to order a tow from Dunedin out of my own pocket. Insurance is always a gamble: buy it in case you might need it or don't have it and pay if you should have had it.

On our last tour two bikes had flats, three bikes broke belt drives and several bikes needed to get returned from Christ Church to Halilton for one reason or another. $ 550 to get your bike from CC to Hamilton seemed to be the going rate. And that did not cover the riders cost for getting back.

Sorry dude but brake downs can happen on any bike. I don't know of a rock, nail, broken glass or other road hazard that can tell a Honda tyre from A Harley tyre.

For the broken drive belts I can not explaine what happened. I've ridden a lot of miles with a lot of other on Harley's. Until this trip I never saw a Harley brake a drive belt. It was like some kind of evil spirit chose to vent thier vengence.

The reamining issues were driver errors that disabled the bikes. And again I doubt the brand of bike had much to do with the issues. Rider error was the culpret. Ride to close together and you can hit one another on any brand of bike; read the pavment wrong and your off in the tulies on a BMW or Ducati.

Meanwhile it was a bad series of events that could have been avoided in some cases and not in others.
