Here is a vent/rave for your reading pleasure

There I am, four-wheeling down the northwestern, and as I pass Pt. Chev I see about 40 odd cruisers trundling down the onramp.
Cool, a bunch of riders enjoying the beautiful day. Good for them.
Except that for the next minute or two, as I watch them merge and then pass me, they put on a decidedly dubious display of riding.. like passing on the left in the left most lane, and riding between cars at 100+ km/h, and generally giving motorcyclists a bad name. Several times we tried to change lanes, but at the last moment a dumbass on his bike would potato his way past us. Could have been very nasty.

I know I'm only a newbie, but that seems like a pretty stupid way to ride :brick:

I'm all for giving it some stick when it's a clear road, but on a busy motorway (and in town/suburbia) I ride like a Priest with 99 points on his licence, a gammy head gasket, and his newborn child on the pillion.

What about you folks?
Come to think of it, were any of you riding in this group?! :shake:

I'd always much rather riding in smaller groups of 5-6 bikes. I find with bigger groups - people are more inclined to be idiots or fall off (or worse still, cause others to bin).

To me, 40 bikes together is asking for trouble anyway - let alone riding like gherkins. Funny thing is - these same riders wonder why the vast majority of the public who only drive cars condone excessive insurance and ACC premiums for bike riders. If that example of riding is the only interaction the public has with motorcycling - it does nothing but reinforce the stereotype.

It's called the pack mentality. :stupid: My dork is bigger than your dork. :thud: Yes my but my dork is faster :scooter: than your dork. Not true my dork can come faster :doobey: than your dork yadda yadda yadda. Just not much that can be done about it. :moon:

Can't be any worse than going for a ride in a group of around 20 an having two crash one lose a chain(Thats bloody disgracefull)and others poping wheelies to show what wankers they are.
Yeah be real picky who you ride with.Losing a chain, what a fuckin' joke.

I am sure your bike has never had a failure?? Learn the facts before you bleat on like Yamahamaman.

A failure of something that you have no control over is a little different to a badly maintained / non maintained chain coming of. It's highly unlikely a correctly adjusted, lubricated chain running on unworn sprockets will fail. These are all things you have control over.

Your damn right there my bike never has had a failure.
That's because I look after the bloody thing.
Some thing somebody that has a chain come off could learn.
And don't try to tell me he didn't know his chain or sprockets were either stuffed, way out of adjustment or both.
The facts are simple,he shouldn't have been on the road.

Thats pretty much what I thought.
If a guy cops a good bagging when these things happen then he might not let it happen again. That way he learns and maybe even lives longer.

personally, I found the wheelie antics livend up what is always a dead boring stretch of state highway. more power to them.. takes more skill than you or I have jackrat :thud: but then what would I know?... i was only riding behind them. I'm sure you've got a much better idea of what went on.

as for the bins-yeah., agreed. rather silly... ride within the limits and you'll probably get home ok.

You seem to have an awful lot to say for someone who wasn't even present. Do you know how long Ryan has been riding?? Do you know Ryan's level of mechanical knowledge?? Yes his bike might need some maintenance, but he's a learner, give him a break. He has learnt that lesson the hard way, he's still an awesome guy to ride with, he considers the other riders and doesn't have an attitude problem.

As for your criticism of the rest of the group. What happened in your life to make you such an antisocial grouch???? Everyone i spoke to had an AWESOME day!!!!! The group stuck together, waited for each other, helped each other out, and displayed true motorcycling comradeship.

When you finally get the chip off your shoulder, learn some social skills, and bother attending a group ride then you can have your say. :finger:

Stop being a fuckwit and being so bloody negative about everyone elses fun.If you don't want to go out and enjoy yourself it's your problem, not ours.
I'm sure I'm not the only one sick of your negative comments all the time.

Thank fuck for that - this board is finally getting some teeth again.

Personally I don't care if people bin their bikes on every corner (Darwin Theory) - I just like taking sides and provocating debate.

I feel for the guy on the CBR tho - that must have been a sickening experience. Having seen my R1 scoot down the road.....I can empathise - both with the accident and the external cause.

A couple of lessons these - one: Ride within your limits, two: don't ride hard on a road that you don't know what is around the corner.

I will expand on my previous comment about small riding groups. I meant that you are less likely to have an accident when you are riding with a small group of people you know well. In large groups - people can get a little overwhelmed and feel they have to either prove something or keep up....either of which can be their undoing.

one day we gota ALL go down to the pub and get drunk aye?........ then again maybe not... I cant handle the next day any more.

As for large groups theres lots of reasons why thats a bit dodgy, the last time I rode any big distance like that curtacy (sp?) of a bus 4 ended up in hospital 1 by chopper (the flying kind) and 1 in a cop car (meat waggon was full) I now try to put a little distance between bikes

Right about this was started by somebody bagging other riders. It's so holier than thou to spout on about overtaking on the lefthand lane etc. I certainly don't think twice at taking any lane and picking my way through the motorway. That's why I have a bike. Left lane is often the emptiest anyway. As a fellow rider, he could cut a little slack for a group of riders having a bit of fun and enjoying the "pack" event. You could even show a little patience. Not slag them all off as dorks. Get a life! There is a rebel element in biking that attracts us to it.

I'm afraid I can't show patience for a bunch of people pretending to be rebels and riding like wankers on a busy motorway . They were just asking to get clobbered by a car.
If they had displayed a little patience to a fellow road-user I wouldn't have felt the need to moan and groan about them on this site :)

I never did have a torque rod come undone, but back in the seventies when I had a Suzuki with a rod operated drum brake I did suffer the old "flipped over cam" when the shoes got too worn. Now that was a problem forcing the thing back so I could ride it without the brakes jammed on to get home.

Did they have 2 cent pieces back then Merv? that was a common trick, pop one either side of the cam, kept you going until you remembered your brakes were worn out.

Yep we'd graduated from threepences and sixpences by the time I got a bike and if I still had any pennies or halfpennies left they would have been too big.

That incident I was talking about I'd ridden up the Bridal Path from the Heathcote side and was on the way down and put my foot on the brake and it hit the floor so to speak. Had to get off the bike and pull the damn rod back and go easy on it to get home.

Anyway it wasn't quite like the experiences being talked about on the "First annual dork run".

I'm very sure it's not the first. I'll bet it wasnt long after the very first motorised cycle contraption that some dork had his hands on it.

A few months ago I think it was the North & South mag had an article about the problem bikers (young kids on highpowered machines) hooning around queen st AK. in the early 60s and compared it to todays boy racers :eyepoke: it seems that there is always an element in society who want to enjoy themselves, but find others are not so accomadating.
Wouldn't it be great to see heaps more bikes on the road like in the days gone by.

what fact? I didn't try stand up wheelies on that ride because I haven't even mastered seated wheelies yet! But rest assured that I'm working on it tho and picking my time and place sensibly.

I don't think it was a lack of skills that caused the CBR to get binned- just a bad judgement call. I'm quite sure that CBR rider has more skills than me (as evidenced by sheer speed and stunting ability) but I don't think he's quite as worried about binning his bike as I was so I'm a little more cautious!

good skills does not necessarily equal safe riding.. and good judgement is no gaurantee of it either

It's all down to attitude. One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. You could see it as people who use the bike to push through busy m'way traffic and enjoying it. That's why they like bikes. "pretenders", "wankers"? -cmon, may be they are trying to escape from this PC shit.
