View Full Version : What a retard.....

Cibby
20th March 2006, 10:19
And yes, i am talking about myself.

Went for a small blat last night around Maratai with Postie, on the back into Maratai, right on dusk, took a corner, saw some gravel, had a bit of a panic, hit the brakes way to hard and low slided it accross the road.

Luckly no cars were coming..!

I'm ok, i stopped sliding on the side of the road. sore knee, sore hip with Gravel rash where my shitty corduras rided up and one very fucked bike..

Ended up down on the beach on the rocks... see pic...

Well that is bike number 2, and in no less than 2 months i might add.

Me thinks me will be a pillion for a while..

Big ups for star insurance as they have appointed an assessor already, and thanks to Colemans for taking another written off bike from me.

Special thanks to Postie for looking after me and stuff...

Sorry to hear that Cibby, I'm glad that it sounds like only minor injuries. Its easy to panic and make a basic error that has nasty consequences - dont beat yourself up too much over it! Happens to the best of us, and it sounds like you are taking a lesson from it which is the best thing you can do in the circumstances. Heal up quick, ya hear?

Sorry to hear that and glad you are OK.

I tend to get a bit 'grab for the brakes' ish myself when I see gravel mid corner (thank goodness for Guzzi linked brakes) but funnily enough, braking mid corner like that will just about always spit you off and yet hitting gravel will only 'maybe' spit you off..

Very hard to get the brain not to react though!

Wow! Spectacular tumble eh?! Main thing is that yr ok, ( if it were me I know I'd be shedding a tear over me bike tho... ). That is a nasty bit of road at dusk and it gets worse when you get away from the coast up into the twisties. Rode from Kaiaua to Manurewa at dusk a week or so back and was having to brake almost to a halt cos of the sunstrike on some of the corners... literally couldn't see where the road went!
Hope you and the bike will be fixed for the Biker Angels ride...:doctor:

Not a retard at all! Just shows how road riding is not the same as track riding. You never know what's around (or on) the next corner. It can happen to anyone and is the reason we try to tell the less experienced to take extra care on the road. Glad you're okay and bein' looked after. The tyre companies have made incredible progress with tyre technology and wet road riding is a lot safer because of it, but no-one can come up with a road tyre that'll handle the situation you found yourself in!

Stink Cibby.

I had a bin a while back, in cordura stuff, and have a scar on my leg for life 'cos it tore. Sworn to use leathers alone from now on, although it's good to have that scar as a constant reminder not to be a dick again. Girlfriend gave me heaps of sympathy and stroking 'cos of it too :)

I did the same as you once, but luckily the trees saved it from the rocks and water :niceone:

What's wrong with crossing the centre line??
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!
You should, on a public highway, be able to do all your cornering, etc, on your own side of the road. Occasionally, you can cross the centreline (conditions 100% applicable, of course), but, it is not a good habit to get in to...a bit like Services basic training.......train to do the things that, when all thought is gone, you will do instinctively! Crossing the centreline, instinctively, is NOT a good look for continued survival ..............

Ixion
20th March 2006, 23:44
Hm. Nana mode on . Whilst I agree with you that crossing the centre line is , per se, a VERY BAD THING; and should never be regarded as standard practice: none the less, I do think there are some occasions when it is justifiable. There are some roads (SH22 is one example) where the road "wriggles" in a straight line - ie there are a series of bends, but the exit from the last bend is more or less in line with the entrance to the first bend, and the whole series is plainly visible from the start. And the road continues straight on after the last wiggle!

In such circumstances, I think that straight lining the wriggles is , not perhaps a good or even advisable thing , but an understandable one. Always assuming visibility, no other traffic etc etc.

I would NOT wish to have to explain this to a traffic cop, and learners should NOT take this as good advice. But you will not necessarily die if you do it.I often do .

One must bear in mind, that many of the NZ back roads (SH22 is, again, a good example) were never intended , when they were first built, to have a centre line. I remember when Sh22 was all gravel, it followed pretty much the same route as now, but there was no suggestion of people keeping strictly to one side - you kept more or less leftish or centre of the road, when the way ahead was clear, and moved over if you encountered oncoming traffic. As one still does on gravel roads, and roads with no centre line.

Nana mode off.

justsomeguy
21st March 2006, 00:05
Of course it's bad. Period.

The only time you may justify crossing the centre line is if you can't hold your current line on your side of the road without dropping your corner speed and you want to play with or overtake that bozzo ahead on the faster bike who can't corner-- Assuming you're riding fastishlishdish and you can SEE CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN IS GONE
I CAN SEE ALL OBSTACLES IN MY WAY
GONE ARE THE DARK CLOUDS THAT HAD ME DOWN
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY

OH YES I CAN MAKE IT NOW THE PAIN IS GONE
ALL OF THE BAD FEELINGS HAVE DISAPPEARED
HERE IS THAT RAINBOW I'VE BEEN PRAYING FOR
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY

LOOK ALL AROUND THERE'S NOTHING BUT BLUE SKIES
LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD THERE'S NOTHING BUT BLUE SKIES

I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN IS GONE
I CAN SEE ALL OBSTACLES IN MY WAY
HERE IS THAT RAINBOW I'VE BEEN PRAYING FOR
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY
BRI-RI-RI-RI-RIGHT
BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY
OH YEAH
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY
IT'S GONNA BE A BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN SHINY DAY.

By the way newbies - stick to your side of the road at all costs and only ride as fast as your visibility allows, making sure you can safely brake to a stop in half the visible distance (check your mirrors too). This tip also applies while overtaking people.

Why would you wanna straighten out the curves ya big nana? Heck, that's one of the reasons I never cross the centre, infact I basically stick to the right tyre tracks of the cars: so you can get more lean on.

It's also good practice for when it's wet and you wanna avoid the shitty oily patch in the middle.

Impressive piccies to show the grandkids one day perhaps?

I know we are attached to our machines, and loosing a bike hurts, but as others have pointed out, they are easier to come by than replacement body parts.

I don't really agree here aye:

1) if she'd done nothing, not closed the throttle, not braked, she'd have a much better chance of being sweet...well, actually, sorry, you said, improve, not quicken...so yeah, learn not to freak Cib.

2) I found my first big bike, an '02 ZX6R heaps more forgiving and stable than my CBR250 was. Where the 250 would go down on gravel straight away, the 6 gave you plenty of warning. So more weight and speed isn't necessarily equal to being harder to ride.

All good Cibby, I'm sure you'll be out again soon.

gixermike

moving around a lot more and using both side of the road is the basis of just about every advanced riding course. there was another link recently about a 12 second rule for looking ahead, well, start looking around the corner way before you go into it, thats givern you some more seconds.

Crossing the centre line; i.e go out into right hand lane (obviously not if theres something coming) and have a look coming into left handers, means you can see way earlier and then slow down or avoid that dodgy bit of gravel / diesel / old cogger earlier and take a much smoother line around it. It will also give you confidence to crank right over in the bend, knowing there are no nasty surprises. go in quite late then end up on your own side of the road at full chat, not drifting into the other lane hard on the power.

If I can see both lanes then I use them, you pay for both. I agree newbies should take this bit slowly (wait for your full..etc). but it gives you a massive advantage over cars in right hand corners (coz you can get right up to the kerb and see round it) and on the entry to left hand corners. you'll find you get caught out a lot less by 'tightening' corners,
If you want some idea of what I mean, try and get hold of a 2nd hand copy of the police motorcycle handbook, they're always on Egay. it's the uk police bike course manual.... The guys I got assessed by don't go fast, they just never slow down and will deck a Pan euopean out fully laoded on every corner one after another. If any body wants some bits of it, i'll scan them and Pdf them to someone.Or post it over..unless you wait till about august.
go on...tell me 'another bloody pom' etc etc

i agree with you Toast, a bigger bike goes faster, obvioulsy, but they also have much better brakes and handling. For the price of a early '90's CBR, you can get a much safer (in the aspect of brakes and handling) late 90's 600 sport bike or tourer.
i feel much safer riding bigger bikes then i do little 250's

Your giving out tips now??? But dont you think you should heed your own advice?
sheesh

I do - that's the only reason I've been riding the way I have pretty much every weekend for the past 1 year and one and a half months and lived.

Haha I second that! Riding behind JSG was one of the most freaky

experiences in my riding career :slap: never again

What?? When was this? I can't remember passing or being passed by a bright yellow CBR recently.

You sure it was me? I ALWAYS move right over and let faster riders through.

Yeh I had the same problem with my bin... jacket was zipping into the trousers on the back, but still came up on the side, so ended up with a nice bit of gravel rash.

Could be worse... still got your looks as they say ;)
