This link tells all from somebody extremely pedantic.

I don't worry about checking front/rear wheel alignment with string, I just make sure that I have turned the adjusters exactly the same number of part turns from the same reference point on the swing arm on each side.

I used this doc, from pyrocam, helped me the first time I tried tightening my chain.
Just make sure you also remove any lock pins before you undo the nuts.

I just looked around the back of my bike, grabbed the provided under-seat toolkit, looked carefully at the nuts, and adjusted them until the chain was properly tightened... Oh I LOVE BIKES SOOOOOO MUCH, so nice and easy to fix (so far...)

Yeah, even I'm finding motorcycle maintenance easy... one thing i thought that would be tricky, but was not at all, was replacing a clutch cable...

ohmigod. I just read it again to see if it needed updating and I contradicted myself. :shit: I said put your chain on its tightest point then said 'ok so now your chain is at its loosest point'
here is an updated version with that minor bit fixed

That's OK as long as you aware that those marks are not at all reliable.
You need to check with a straight edge or line to verify the marks are correct before you can trust them.
