View Full Version : Motorway Patrol - Do they know how stupid it makes them look?

In the same programme they show a cop stopping a camper van at night on the motorway, after complaints of it travelling at 20 kmh.
The cop notes that the van has an obscured number plate.
The van fails to respond to the flashing lights and changes lanes without indicating.
Then finally stops dead in the lane.
Cop uses the PA to tell the driver to pull over, but he gets out and starts abusing the cop.
When the cop gets the silly old prick to move the van onto the shoulder the old fart gets really agressive.
For all this he gets a warning
Later they show a young woman, very polite and appologetic, she gets a ticket for running out of gas on the motorway in broad daylight.
Attack must be the best form of defense, after all.

Maybe the TV cameras make some of the coppers think go get em thoughts, Hell, I would hate to have a TV crew watching my every move while I am at work. (note I didn't say doing work!)
Big ups to the Cops that think things through, and use sound Judgement. That garners respect.
The other power trippers; need I put into words the distaste?

Motorway Patrol is mostly a PR excersize. That's all I have to say.

Had a mate (bike cop) who did the first or second season of one of those shows. He said it definately made the work a bit harder, didn't go back in when the next season came around.
That dude has some stories man!!
As far as the PR goes, Respect is gained by fear, see the How to avoid an Asswhoopin thread...
Bring back 6 foot burly cops that know how to kick their local kids asses, and by the time the cheeky shits of today grow up, policeman might be a respectable title again!

Just start yelling at the wankers, and you should get off.
Shows that if you back down, they get on the power trip horse and take all ya money.
Small man syndrome if you ask me.

Does make it look stupid with those two cases stated...
madboy
22nd March 2006, 13:34
Personally I'd rather not be close enough to yell at them... but each to their own.
It's interesting to see how some people get treated vs others. I'd bet if it was a sacked out Integra with an 18yo male being a dumbass (holding up traffic, unsafe lane change, stopping in the middle of the friggin mway, obscured numberplate and then giving the cop lip) instead of a cranky old man in a piece of shite van - there'd be more than a warning handed out.
But I fully agree with that chick getting a ticket for running out of gas on the bridge. I know she prob didn't do it deliberately, but still a price must be paid for stupidity. And there should be an additional fine added for the paint job.
And that pissed monkey doing 140k WITHOUT noticing a bloody patrol car behind him... He got a pretty cheap let off I thought.

It amazed me that the guy who ran up the rear of that car got a small fine - I bet the woman who ran out of petrol probably didn't get off so lightly. I was pleased that she didn't get off with just a warning though, it was pretty stupid to run out of petrol on the bridge, it's not like she had a breakdown or something. The paint job was pretty sad too!
The cop who attended that accident (not the one called Fish) was a dork - he couldn't keep his head still and the 'fame' was obviously affecting his ability to do the job, what a moron!
At least all the other cops came across as pleasant, polite people, he would have been more at home on Shortland Street!
As for the dickhead in the van, people like that shouldn't be allowed to drive. Okay, I don't think he was doing the alleged 20kph the other motorist complained about, but what an aggressive idiot. He should have been charged with something, surely there must be a charge for "driving under the influence of your own importance"?!!

Haha, nicely put.
I could sit here and have a massive bitch about cops this / revenue that and everyone would jump in with their 2c on what a bunch of cunts they are.
Or I could also mention my 2 little friendly warnings lately about my front wheels lack of contact with the ground and get a lesser response from everyone.
It confirms the theory that "If you gotta fine, you probably deserved it" :bash:

beemer, i agree about the first cop on the scene of that 3 car accident....what a tosser! what happened to cops being polite....sir would have sounded better than mate. and then yelling at the guy in the 3rd car to help him push the thing off the road. hell....thats out of it. granted they laid the blame on him, but still not smart to make someone push a car right after an accident. plus he was yelling and carrying on...yeesh!

It's a 'careless' for running out of gas on the bridge. You wouldn't want it heard by a Judge who was held up in the gridlock.

Yep, he was a bit of a hyper active dork. But they did have to clear the M/way quickly and get traffic flowing again or else there would likely be another smash back behind them somewhere.

I was lost for words when she handed out a careless to that lady, shit, i ended up with a careless and in all fairness it should've been dangerous, not that i'm complianing or anything, i know running out of gas on the harbour bridge is pretty dumb and can cause a lot of hassle, but shit "careless" surely there could be a lesser charge.
The old git from the cops POV yeah i prolly would've told him to fuck off and not bothered with a ticket as well, i couldn't be fucked dealing with an old cock like that, new licenceing for old people needs to be stricter and more regular though, some or most just can't think quick enough, if they die, who gives they've lived 70-80 odd years, what about the people they take with them?

The "careless' thing on the Harbour Bridge goes back to its earliest days. It was regarded as a "special case" , and there used to be signs up warning about it. The old Harbour Bridge Authority would ping you for it. Arguably, you'd have a good chance of defending it, after all it is hardly careless "DRIVING", is it.
What I remember was , in older cars, the fuel take off was often at the front of the tank. And going up the bridge, it's quite steep. And all the fuel runs to the BACK of the tank. uh -uh .
But everybody on the Shore used to know, NEVER tell the Bridge guy you're out of gas, tell him your fuel pump's packed up. Then he'll push you down to the Authority yard, or over to Fanshawe St.

Certainly not. Nana would never endorse a falsehood.
But, y'see, I'm not a qualified machanic. So if someone asks me "What's the problem", and I say "Uh - dunno, think maybe me fuel pump's packed up", then I'm only an amateur expressing an opinion. Might be right, after all.

Yep was just going to say that.
He'd be one of the ones that would give you a ticket for not having an L plate on if you had a learners and give you a great big lecture at the same time with a big smirk on his face. He really did think he was the man didn't he.

The one thing I forgot to mention was the cop telling the guy who had run up the arse of the others to push his car off the road. I know he was at fault, but what if he'd been seriously injured and had died while exerting himself? The cop kept going on about getting the kid checked out "because, well, he's a kid" but he didn't seem to have much concern for anyone else.
If I had to be pulled over by anyone, I'd rather it by a cop like Fish. Okay, he was probably aware of being filmed, but he was unfailingly polite and respectful, even when the people he was filming didn't deserve it.

Watching the old bugger in the Bedford van had me thinking. I need to carry a disease infested half blind unpredictable Bull Mastiff on my bike with me.
Worked for him......
I used to work in a courthouse. You would be amazed at the weird stories associated with the hundreds of careless use cases that went thru. I was interested to see that the plod can now issue an infringement for careless use, always used to have to go in front of at least a J.P????
J.P's in a courtroom, now theres a power-trip for ya!:buggerd:

Nope, no ION for careless. She would have been given a TON and received a summons to court at a later date.
Careless charges are heard before JP's because there is no term of imprisonment, unlike dangerous, reckless, EBA & disqualy driving.

Cheers for that Spud.
I was sitting at the registrars desk in a defended hearing court (traffic) one day years ago. I remember this redneck was defending himself on an eba charge. The prosecution outlined the summary of facts etc. the judge then assisted the defendant in terms of procedure etc. and invited him to outline his defence against the facts outlined by prosecution.
The guy's entire defence rested on the fact that "He wasn't pissed that day, He had driven a lot more pissed than that hundres of times..."
He was promptly convicted.
I started working at Welly D.C when I was 16. What an introduction to the "real world" I used to get the tranny's come to the counter all the time. There is nothing funnier than asking a tranny, with all the bling, what their name is, and them to reply "Bruce"

Used to work there years ago. I soon realised that the public service wasn't for me. Ironically I worked in the fines section for most of my time there. Used to arrange the seizure of cars for non-payment. Great fun!!!
