Following on from things mentioned in "U2, 22, Te Awamu2" - The Trip Report" (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=26527).
Some sort of East Cape trip over Easter weekend.
I reckon cruise up to Mahia on Saturday, cruise around to Ohiwa on Sunday, burn it back to Welly on Monday.
Good campgrounds in both places.
Or whatever. Throw your ideas in here.

What about Friday? We've got 4 days we can make use of.
My parent's are in Gisborne so I'd definitely want to spend a night there. There are beds for two others. It sounds like a few people know places they could stay, maybe we could divide up for the night.
But I love the idea of taking the coast road around East Cape.

It would be worth while having a read of trip reports from around there. Consider where you can get gas and what your tank range is. I think this is one of the most petrolium remote parts of NZ.

Oh yeah.. Haven't had enough public holidays in my life to work out how they go yet.
Could spend an extra day in Taupo or somewhere getting shitfaced.
Or around the Coromandel! Hey, now that's thinkin..
But I love the idea of taking the coast road around East Cape. It's pretty good. I figure it's a good idea to take ones time, on a road like that. Lots of places to stop and take photos. I don't mean the gravel road though, I mean SH35. I'm not that keen.

We did the trip around East Cape last Easter, went to Napier on the Friday, up to Gisborne for the Sat & Sun nite. Sun Spent most of the day tripping around the cape. You can get petrol in most places. We did Gisborne - Opotiki - Te Kaha (petrol & cafe) - Te Araroa (petrol only if it didnt burn down with the pub) - Ruatoria (petrol) - Tokomaru Bay (petrol not always on Sunday, ruins at end of road worth a visit) Tolaga Bay (petrol & long wharf). Good cheap eats & bars in Gisborne but pays to book accomadation. Approx 475km round trip.
If going up go up thru Tiniroto from Wairoa to Gisborne then back via the coast road - sealed all the way.
This year we are planning on going thru New Plymouth to Tauranga & back via Gisborne & Napier, Anyway enjoy the trip some bloody good roads & stunning scenery.

Can't do the whole trip - But I'll pop up to Taupo for the last night if that's where everyone ends up.

Thanks Pickle - that's good to know. Spoke to my Dad and he listed petrol in those same places. My parents already have people staying with them over Easter, so count them out. It also means I'm no longer fussed where we stop for nights.
What do you think LBTW? Friday night between Napier and Gisborne (maybe Mahia, maybe Gisborne itself); slowly round the coast Saturday, spend the night BOP somewhere (maybe Opotoki); Sunday night in taupo to meet Velox and home Monday?
Who's coming?

We're planning to be at the bro's bach at Mohaka, if the weather is good we'll be on the bikes, & might be up for a ride on the Saturday, maybe join you guys to up past Gizzy somewhere & then turn back.
Cheers

We are definate starters. My ma lives in Wairoa and will be pissy as hell if we don't stay a night with her, so we'll be staying Friday night in Wairoa. If the rest of you are planning on staying somewheres else, we can always arrange to meet back up for the rest of the trip.

Was thinking of doing a ride up that way sometime myself - but those I would be staying with in Gisborne are due to come and stay with me at Easter....however if there is a change to that plan I could be a starter. Will watch the thread.

That is if I manage to reassemble my bike correctly tomorrow.

Suggestion for what it's worth. Check accommodation options at Awakeri ( about 14 Km the Rotorua side of Whakatane, http://www.awakerisprings.co.nz/ ). The motor camp has cabins, tourist flats and I think Motel type units. Cost includes use of the hot pools.
We take the family camping there regulalry, nice spot.
Being Easter they might be booked already though.
Enjoy the ride.

Cool, I'll be in Wairoa that weekend. It'd good to meet the some of you peeps if you have a quick pit stop on your travels. There's a good pub in Mahia now, so Saturday night should be god for a few drinks. And the camp grounds shouldn't be too packed.

I'm definitely going. Buying a bike rack and pack tomorrow. After reading that other thread about the East Cape it sounds like it's best to travel clockwise around (Opotoki to Gisborne). We just need to decide on a meeting place and time. I'm going to be riding on Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week so should be able to talk to some of you there.

So how does this sound?
Friday Wgtn to Gisborne = 538km
Saturday Gisborne to Opotiki then around the cape back to Gisborne = 470km
Sunday Gisborne to Taupo = 366km
Monday Taupo to Wgtn = 380km (or 466km if we go via Napier)
limbimtimwim
7th April 2006, 06:20
Aye yip, that's clockwise too. Dreamer is correct,. nicer that way.

Sorry I have been real quiet. I discoved my fuel tap was leaking (again). My bodge silicon job didn't work. I don't want to ride it if it is going to catch on fire. But now I have confirmed I can use the tap from another bike, so have more options.
Anyway, I didn't want to make bookings and stuff if I couldn't go :( .

Well I'm not going to be in Palmy on Sat night like I thought I was so I prob won't come up to Taupo anymore. Sorry guys - another one bailing. Maybe we should organise one for a time when more people are available.
Pickle
11th April 2006, 21:12
We won't be staying in Taupo as I never heard back from anyone & I have not been able to find any accommadation as the place seems to be booked out & neither of us want to stay in a tent so we will be going from Tauranga on Sunday down to Dannevirke to see my Father, then back to Wgtn on Monday.
Hope you guy's who are going to Gisborne have booked somewhere to stay as we were in Gisborne last year at Easter & it was pretty well booked out.
Also remember that there wont be much open on Good Friday & Easter Sunday

Okay yay no leaks!
I'll try and ring around today and find out cabin availibility. You guys keen on tents? I'm a wuss and am not :-).
Can you handle a backpackers?
Kendog
12th April 2006, 09:43
Also not keen on tents.
Backpackers would be a fine as a last resort. Let me know how you get on.
Taupo does not sound promising, may need to look elsewhere.

I just cancelled a studio unit at www.clevedonmotel.co.nz in Rotorua if it's not too far out of the way for you. There is still some hotel accommodation left in Rotorua and split three ways it is not too expensive so Taupo may still have some too.

We had a great time.
Can't be bothered with writing proper stuff just yet, but basically:
Pies were eaten. KMs were clocked up. Beer was drunk. Good time by all.
If you didn't come along, you missed out big time!!
