Having read a few threads here I wondered if maybee a KB spanner night might be a good idea.
The idea being for more experienced guys to show new bikers how to do a few basic mechanical setups and repairs.
Fairing repairs, brake bleeding, brake pad replacement that sort of thing.
What do you guys think ?

IT would take a couple of months to do it in one sitting. What you need to do is find someone with a big shed, prefferably a bike stand and some tools that we can all use once or twice a month. Then each month pick a topic and get a volunteer to research it and provide a presentation. Start off with basic pre ride inspections (most people have a checklist but don't know what they are actually looking for). Move on to a more specialist topic like proper weekly maitenance. Monthly maintenance . And so on.

As you want everyone to have the same level of understanding it may pay to even have a session on naming the tools we all use and the various parts of a bike, as some riders have little or no mechanical knowledge... I have met a rider who did not know you had to lube your chain.

Doing it this way you could post each weeks topics and those who care can come along as well as the core class.

Yeah a KB Basic Bike Mechanics manual sort of thing.

A thread with a writeup & pics would be sweet as for those who cannot attend. I'll make sure I would attend though if it's in Aucks.

Would bloody love something like this.

Only problem is, whose got a big shed?

And who supplies the tools and the time?

I'd be quite happy to kick in cash/beer in return for learning.

Antallica

Yep, I'll certainly pay something.

well Ive got a double workshop/garage -if thats feasable as a venue

Big Dog

I would have been happy to supply the tools, before mine were stolen. 3yrs and I still have been unable to replace them.

I would be quite happy to do something about basic maintenance and pre ride etc but I aint a real mechanic so your more spec questions would need some other volunteer.

well Ive got a double workshop/garage -if thats feasable as a venue

Depending on numbers, a double would be good for around 10-20 depending how much is not in use, remembering you will need to get a bike in there as well.

well Ive got a fullish type workshop with compresser , air tools, spray gun and all the normal sockets spanners and stuff Only problem is its a bit of a mess--thanks to being "helped" by baby bikie .
I also may have an A grade mechanic that might offer to be head tutor if he getts offered enough beer

guys if ya in dorkland Ill be happy to host the whole deal.
Im thinking thought hat we should do a series of nights the first being basic bike maintainence then maybee moving on to the harder stuff.
I'm thinking maybee the first evening will only need a couple of experienced members to run through the basics.

Yeah hopefully my bike will be running sweet. Hey were you out today?, the g/f thinks she saw you going past my house opposite Tarewa Park.Yep, about lunch time. Had 2 punchers at the same time in the new P Diab rear tyre on my way back from Puke yesterday. So stayed in Albany with friends and tripped back today.
Have added a better temp type repair kit and electic pump to my bike kit now!

Only a newbie to this site, but would be keen to tag along if nobody minds and if I don't have a test or an assignment due that night

Sounds like a great idea. I have some mike's, soft hammer, stahlwille's, bore gauges etc if they would be any help.

Sounds like if we all bring a sixer for the tutors they'll be boozin' for free for a month! :2thumbsup Although... one person's month's supply of beer is another person's weekend's supply... :thud:

erik

You guys were fast getting the garage clean :niceone:.
I don't think it really matters for me which night it is, as long as I don't have an assignment due the next day that I'm trying to finish ;). But after Friday, I should have a bit of a break from them, I hope, so I should be ok for whenever.

Antallica
6th May 2004, 01:08
Since my bike should have it's part tomorrow I'll really enjoy the trip down to this event. Might not be such a bad ride after all RiderInBlack since all my grunt (and some more) has returned.

Anytime suits me seeing as I'm looking for work and all.

Shawn
6th May 2004, 02:15
hey...i cam come in any evening...doesn't really matter...thanks a lot u guys...

RiderInBlack
6th May 2004, 10:29
As I work for myself I can juggle which night as long as I have enough warning (week+). Prob Friday is the best if I stay in AK over night and ride back the next day.

Antallica, give me a Tx if your keen to go to Puke this Sat (8/5) for a play on the track.
