View Full Version : Hayabusa top speed

Just been reviewing a vid of a turbo 'busa and noticed the tacho climbed another 1000rpm after pegging the speedo at 220mph! Now my bike is geared for 220kp/h at 12000rpm, redline. Does anyone know what the 'busa is geared to do at 11200rpm, the reading on the vid? I assume some speedo error,so the rev counter would be a more accurate guide to actual top speed.:ride:

Is that the vid where he gets up to around 120mph on the back wheel? Impressive

They've likely changed the output ratio BUT:
in a perfect world, each gear would be liniar.

Draw a graph, 0 mph at 0 rpm, 220 mph at X rpm (or a "good" number unlikely to have much error) , then work out what an increase of 1000 rpm makes it.

Yep that's the one! Awesome!

Yeah, that's how I worked out mine, as it's doin' 110kp/h at 6000rpm, but for the 'busa, it doesn't show that figure, he's too busy up on 1 til about 140mph changing up through the gears to I think 4th when he drops the wheel back down and the acceleration from there is breathtaking!

Don't know if this will help you Edbear, but since late 2000 (K1 model) the busa is supposed to have been electronically limited to a top speed of 290kmh along with the ZX12R etc. the earlier X & Y models weren't limited & topped out somewhere north of 300

try a modified unrestricted bike.. then it'll run both off the gauges, with out breaking much of a sweat. Like you say, it's turboed, so it's most likely geared a little different too

Okay... easiest thing to do without screwing around with the gearbox is obviously the sprocket sizes..... so change them and you make redline faster/higher speed again or lower for more accell..

i dunno about you but id probably put a smaller sprocket on for more top speed (lets face it it can do it) so any idea to how fast he was going? ill try and work it out in the meantime think abotu what speed rating his tires are:D

hes doing about 246.4mph on the clock so abotu 250mph and big cc racing have a 600hp busa which s still about 1300cc but they also do a 1600cc bore and stroke kit so you could have about 1000hp if done right come on time for atleast 300mph

The Busas are speed restricted to 183 MPH though that is easily removed. They also have a system that retards the timing in the lower gears 1 to 4 to keep the power more under control (crude sort of traction control I imagine) this is also easily removed. The engine has a lot of potential though it is still quite lively standard..

I believe there are some bored out to 1600cc? Is that right?

Pete, from Busa Pete fame, i recall was talking of having his at 300kph in the early hours on the northen m/way. :headbang:

Eh? Don't you mean a larger sprocket on the front?

IE a larger sprocket on the rear increases acceleration so therefore a smaller sprocket on the front would have the same effect.

All these things are stupidly fast, even stock (once you remove the limiter), every time (almost anyhoo) I rode the 12 I had the speedo over 300kph....you don't need that much space to do it......
I'd love to ride a blown one, it'd be farkin insane.......my old turbo's only a bit on the good side of 200hp and it's a handfull, and most of the busa kits start at 300hp.....
Interesting little story I heard a while back about the bonneville boys with turbo busas, they couldn't get as much top end as the engine was capable of as it would hit a 'wall' at 250 odd mph (maybe more,I can't remember the exact figure) and they couldn't keep 'em straight......the rear would try to come around :eek5: ......the grip on the rear tyre was overtaken by the force it took to push the front through the air at that speed......

Also caused by bikes poor aerodynamics at speed creating lift at the rear.

Standard gearing gives 120kph @ 4000rpm so x 2.5 = 300kph @ 10,000rpm.

Thanks for that, was hoping an owner could help. Some of the comments here are very interesting, though I do know a bit about "the Legend"! I think the 'busa deserves its status and wonder what Suzuki are going to do for an encore! I heard they derestricted the '06 models in response to the ZX14! Who was waiting for his ZX14 to be delivered? Has it arrived yet? Heard a 'busa engine won the latest dyno comp again with 701hp!!!!!!!!:first:
