Is it usual manners for you motocross types to ride your machines in public parks?
Took the dog for the daily walk in Big King Reserve here in Auckland and who should I come across but some prick on a shit box ex dairy farmers bike fanging it around the park. Took it upon myself to warn him it was a urban park with families and small children walking the household mutt and got a hearty "Fuck off and take your poodle with you" in response (he clearly does not know his dogs).
Is this a normal attitude or was he an exceptional cocksucker?

Pretty normal for people who ride in parks....as a kid he was probably a skateboarder who expected pedestrians to leap out of his way as he blasted through shopping centers.Finaly achieving 2 wheels he could then force people off footpaths and onto the grass or road.It was his parents fault of course....but you can blame the Labour Government too if you like.

Funny how we find it pretty offensive how guys on nasty dirt bikes ride stupidly in inappropriate places like public parks.
Not so funny when 'other' people find it offensive when we ride inappropriately on race track replica's in public places like... well the highway...

You didn't look at what I ride, did you Paul? All noise, little speed
Plus a road is a defined area, as opposed to a rolling park with trees etc.

Was the young fella actually doing any harm? Yeah yeah he was prolly making a bit of noise, and messing up the grass. It'll grow back. And I doubt there was any likelihood of him hitting anyone - or dogs. Were you not once young ?

Im sorry I obviously missed your point..... who was being rude again?
Perhaps if I read it again...... nope still dont see it.
Ok he was a bit rude to you and all BUT, give the boy his credit, he was in a park, not on a road.
He was being at least moderately considerate of other users, or you would have said so.
And he was sticking up for his right to have a bit of fun and not destroy property, steal, drug up or generally be a complete fuck up.
What reaction did you expect exactly?
Gee thanks mister, I will go lock it up at home and never ride again.
Maybe if you had told him of a better place or suggested some way to improve his riding skills you might have got a different reaction, then again maybe not.

Alarmingly this guy was late forties - don't mind little fellas on their small bikes, had one myself in fact.
Noise doesn't matter - the dogs make a cacophony themselves. My worry is the bike coming over a berm and collecting a kid.

Not a boy - if he was I would have done exactly as you describe. In fact I probably would have asked for a ride myself.
Simple fact was I wanted to make sure this 40ish man knew there were other park users and to watch out for them. Didn't tell him to leave.

We ride our pit bikes all over the place, mostly parks and construction areas.
Its harder to find places to ride close to home these days (for a REAL dirtbike), thats why we got the little bikes - to go ride wherever the fuck we want :headbang:

growing up, there was HEAPS of places to ride. But over the years, Joe public complained and whinged about it, at one stage even put nail traps down to get bikers. Now that I can afford the toys I want, there is NO WHERE to go. Does not matter what you do these days, or what you do. There allways will be at least one person who thinks its well in their right to complain about what your doing. If there was a place in New Plymouth that I could go, when Im not shift working then Id be stoked. But no such luck. As for walking your dog in a public park? How selfish, get out of his way as hes working on a lap record, didnt ya know?:gob: You never break the law? Go walk your mutt elsewhere:bash:
The stuff you could get away with when I was a kid was no particular big thing, just people have the need to blow it outta proportion these days. Blame the Government? Nope, blame yourselves... If I saw this, Id probably go and get the DRZ and give him a race :)

I live opposite a big park, there are no houses down one side of the street,it's just the park, and there are signs saying no motorcycles. On a fine day it's nice to see kids out there on mini bikes and quads, and bigger kids on bigger bikes, they blat around a bit fast sometimes, but it's fairly open they avoid people doing other activities ok.But it's always spoiled by some dickhead who takes the complete exhaust off his XR and goes up and down with a huge noise doing wheelies and churning the wetter patches up into mud pools. If everyone just kept it at a nice level I doubt if locals, council or cops would see any problems....but it always takes someone to push the limits of society.
I could go out there and rip it up with them.....but they don't need to know what I have in my shed.

No I don't like people misbehaving about kids. We have some boys racers down the road who insist on doing wheelies up and down our road. Mr Plodd apparently has been rung, but so far has done nothing. Went and had a chat with them, hopefully it'll change. But its more important how you come accross and what you say at the time. As for our lawns? I've tried but its not suitable, even for the z50. Might have to move one day to a place more suitable...:done:

I think if your on a little gutless Pit bike that is fine, you're just playing round and you're not as likely to take someone out, but as for a bigger bike (like an old farm hack) bad news, you're just going to piss people off, get all the rest of us a bad name and look like a fucking bell end when you start abusing people that inform you that this is not the ideal place to ride your POS. Even if you've just fixed your bike up and your testign it, it's not a good idea to rip around for ages in a public area.
It's all about just being a little bit considerate and sensible.

I should have been a bit more specific Selwyn.
I don't like what this guy was doing, really stupid! We are regulars walking Bo on the beach which is a designated dog exercise area and every now and then some nong jumps on a quad, bike, 4WD and has a burn up down the beach. Bloody stupid with over excited dogs running about the place!
However, what I was getting at is every day motorcyclists act like complete idiots on the road and terrorise motorists in an utterly outrageous fashion. Scooter riders as well in urban areas and we think thats OK.
What I was suggesting was to examine your feelings of outrage as you read the original post and think about how other road users must feel at times?

There is a good reason why dogs are catered for and bikes aren't - WE ARE A MINORITY.
What's more we are a minority with more than its fair share of morons with an attitude.
Everytime some idjut goes riding in a public park, people get pissed off. Not pissed off enough to say anything at the time, but pissed off enough to support legislation curbing our activities. Once upon a time we could all go riding in State Forests and on some Conservation Estates, but this is becoming rare. Why do you think this is happening?
WRT
27th March 2006, 17:03
I've ridden my bike thru the park out the back of our house. Just finished putting it back together, and needed a quick test. Not going to run it all the way out to woodhill just to see whether it works or not, so off I go. Kept the pace and the noise down, never hit power band, and kept well clear of all the people - I stuck to the ungroomed areas. I cant see any problem with that, but if someone was to come along and ask me to leave I would do so without getting abusive at them. Besides, I was doing a quick test, not fanging the crap out of it for ages on end.
Was I doing something wrong? Well, theres no sign saying "No Motorbikes", but I can accept that I wasnt using the park for its intended purpose. However, I didnt damage the park in any way, and made sure that I didnt annoy anyone while I was there. Still, there are always going to be people who will stretch the rules just a little too far . . .

Motu - those were the days. Mt Richmond was my patch, starting out on the old Honda 100!!. In addition to the superb kumera pits that we launched ourselves from (not that I knew that's what they were then - you have enlightened me) I remember a particularly narrow sheep track around the crater that we rode. Would think twice about doing that now. It's those memories from the 70's that have got me back into dirt bikes. I also remember regularly getting chased out of the freezing works holding paddocks by Sylvia Park by some totally unreasonable farm manager!! and he never got us!!
Motu
24th April 2006, 14:14
Hey,we must of lived in the same area then! Yeah,we didn't know what they were,or their significance, although we did know they were kumara pits.We made lots of small tracks around the mountain,it was good soft loamy soil for good corners, lots of jumps for huge air (2ft) and hills to climb - did you ever get up the hill from the Sports Car Club? But no one went up there,we had the place to ourselves.
Yeah,we used to play in the holding paddocks too,and stroll across the motorway! Shit,4 lanes was a hell of a lot of road to run across in those days. The manager lived in that house by the motorway interchange - I know the family that originaly owned it well, the Sylvia Park Army Camp was built on their land...bet they wished they owned it now eh?

24th April 2006, 14:51
Yeah - I was an Otahuhu teenager! Can recall the sports car club but sure don't reckon I'd have made the hill climb - but would've tried no doubt. Really was a great little spot, and no hassle with whatever public was around then. We would just nick off out of sight for a while. I also recall the motocross at Mangere Mountain. No way would we ever get away with staging an event like that now - resource consents, land protection and political correctness being what they are.

We only got up the big climb a few times,it was a tall order for our bikes of the day and a recipie for disaster...it would still be a lot of work on my TLR200.
Motocross on Mangere Mountain - ah,them were the days, that's where we first saw those noisy 2 stroke things - the Bultaco's.I'm sure we had good manners back then - or our Mum's would box our ears!...or more likely the ''wooden spoon''.
