Anyone know a good air rifle (.22 please, not .177) Just thought I might get one, or a .22 rifle would be nice :msn-wink:

Thanks

To get a air rifle you have to be over the age of 18, unless you have your firearms licence, if i was you get your firearms licence so you have some firearms safety and knowledge :niceone: also look at joining a club :niceone:

nanny fucking state sticks her nose in everything. Shit, when I was at college there can't have been many guys who didn't have an air rilfe or two. I've still got my Slavia 620 (but its only a .177, so not what the O/P is after)
We used to have wars up in the bush and never got seriously hurt. Now kids can't do anything involving the slightest risk, and grow up believing they are invincible. Then they get their first car or bike and find out they are mortal, after all.

What?

As above.
Then, what do you want it for? .177 calibre will allow for higher muzzle velocity and better range. If you want to shoot possums, go for a Diana. Mind you, for the price you could but 2 or 3 reasonable .22 rimfire rifles...
If you just want to shoot targets or rats, a good .22 is a BSA.
Want some really good advice - go to Sportways gunshed in Mt Eden.

Yeah, I will get my firearms license soon (well should :D) but if I want a air rifle, I'll just get my old man to buy it

Well I kinda want it for varment hunting etc and target praticse

I have a Diana .177 Its killed many a possum from off our roof when I lived up at Hunua. On the farm at Rotoma opur neighbour's pig kept getting into our garden, we blocked every entrance but the darn pig kept getting in. The neighbour was not concerned he did not have a garden. Out of desperation I got the slug gun out and shot that there pig. a fluke shot perhaps from about 12mtrs but it paralized the pig from its back legs, dragged itself off squeeling, boy did it squeel. Not expecting that result. Funny how the pigs got shut in after that.
Magpies kept a wide berth of the house.
The slug guns good around the house but for more fun the .22 rimfire is a must.

I've used a Ruger 10/22 with a silencer and subsonic ammo. It's about as loud as an air rifle, you just have to be a bit more careful about what's beyond your target.

I've used a Ruger 10/22 with a silencer and subsonic ammo.

The 10/22 is an all-time classic. Worth owning. It's a semi-auto. About $600-$800 new depending on which model you buy. HEAPS of accuracy mods that can be done, it's the Toyota Supra of rifles. Not that 10/22s aren't excellent right out of the box, mind.

To be honest though you can buy nice .22s much cheaper than that. I have a sneaking affection for my father-in-law's old Norinco .22 semiauto that's been kicking around for donkey's years. It does the same job the Ruger does, it's nice to shoot, and you could pick it up secondhand for $100 or so.

Whatever .22 you get, get a suppressor fitted. Like Lou says, when you're shooting subsonics through a suppressed .22, the loudest noise is the firing pin striking and the action cycling. Handy for harvesting rabbit stew when you don't want to bother people in the vicinity with loud bangs.

A nice .22 isn't like a small bike - you won't grow out of it. You might buy more rifles in the future but you'll probably still find that your .22 is what you put the most rounds through.

Air rifles are good for target practice but... why bother?

Might I just mention gun oil here - my preference is for synthetic.....

I used to have one with a 4x zeiss scope, so you could see the expression on your plastic army man's face before you cut him in half with a .177 slug at 20 yards.

Used to shoot the Russkis in the crotch.

Rubbish, there's nothing wrong with sewing machine oil. ;)

One of the by products of the tough gun laws in the UK is that they are into air guns - one of my workers imported a top of the line gun last year, choice bit of kit. They are restricted on air pressue, but here we can run them at max.Gotta take a tank full of air with you though - still,a dive bottles a lot of shots.

The new high power Diana put a pellet out at around 1000fps.
That's plenty for a well placed shot on a bunny or possum.
Trouble is they are twice the price of a average .22
I have an old BSA Metor that's lots of fun at the local tip with my Nephews.
With a tasco 4x40 on it you can see the whiskers on the rats.

While there are people here that seem to know a bit about guns I was wondering if you could give some advice.

I have a .22 slug gun, its a magnum and has an arm down the barrel that you use to pump it up, it also has telescopic sights. I used to use it target shooting a few years ago and it would shoot through our corregated iron fence from around 30ft. Now when you pump it you can here a hissing as (i guess) the air leaks out of it. You can shoot it and watch the slug as it lobs through the air and bounces away.

Is this just a matter of a service at some gun shop? And is this likely to be expensicve?

cheers

Just needs a couple of washers replaced.
Take it to your local gun shop,There are a couple of good ones in Ham's.
Shouldn't cost much.Could even do it your self if you don't mind fiddling with things. If in doubt tho' take it to the shop.
I would reccomend the shop out at Rukahia,Used to be Vern Willsons.
Cheers.

CARS SUCK!

Not all cars suck, and not all the time. I happen to be picking up a very unsucky car tonite - Peugeot 205 GTi. Has a kerb weight under 900 kgs, and a 130bhp engine. Most amusing. :)
Now to find me some twisty roads...

Sounds like serious fun. I just have that sticker on the wierd tyre guard on the TL. Luv to piss off the boy racers when they're stuck at the lights and you wizz up to the front and they see 'cars suck'!.

Just remember just remember that even though a silenced .22 is quiet it is still deadly, the trouble with them is they don't SOUND dangerous - a bit like quiet motorbikes eh!

I have a BB Pistol and .177. Pistol shits all over the rifle for damage (Co2 v Break Action).

I am in the process also of getting my F/A license for trap shooting....so if anyone knows a good shottie, please let me know. I have the following in mind

Kolar COmpetition Skeet
Krieghoff K80 Trap
Remington 1100CM or
Benelli SuperSport.

I have a Miroku. Very good, but not cheap.
What ever you get, don't buy a semi-auto. No matter what anyone tells you, they are all prone to jamming to some extent. They are also time consuming to clean.
Consider SKB, Browning, Miroku, Beretta as good investments. Also worthy of a look are Marocchi Classic Doubles, though re-sale value may not be as good. There are some nice Bettinsoli's out there, too.
And shop around for ammo. You should be able to get trap ammo for no more than $8/25. I buy RC1 from Sportways, $140 for 500 rounds.
