Got a work related piss up on Saturday night so getting there at 8am might be a bit of a problem. And 10 hour rides? The only guy thats really going to enjoy that is the Cruiser rider with the highway pegs me thinks.

cowboyz
31st March 2006, 17:01
nah, you can tour on a sportsbike. Not hell for leather but cruising is possible and comfortable. Besides. The past few weeks have been smaller runs for sportsbikes so have to have one weekend for the criusers.

looking at discovernz travel map gives the following results.

PN - taupo 239km 3 hours 35mins
taupo - napier 140km 2 hours 30 mins
napier - PN 176km 2 hours 40 mins

so that makes 555km and 8 hours 45 mins. Averaging a massive 63k/hour

So we will throw that one out and say. 555km at AVG 95k/hr will be just under 6 hours. Far cry from the 10 we orginially thought. (May be a detour enroute somewhere to make up) Smoke, fuel and food stops will probably make an 8 hour day.

Great days riding this afternoon. Hey I'm good in the wet and need practice so might see you tomorrow but won't do the Apiti stretch what time are you meeting at the GasolineAlley/DC3 at Mangaweka?.

cowboyz
1st April 2006, 17:17
not sure. what do you think. <1 hour. Depends on the crew riding. I will be about the pace I was last weekend which is shitloads slower than you and a little faster than the sheep. We will leave here at 8am. Get there when we do. Still have to catch up with Meanie as haven't seen him all week.

GSVR
1st April 2006, 17:24
Say between 9.00am and 9.30am I'll just ask the attendent there if any bikes have been through. If I'm there early I might have time to have some breakfast if I can stomach it.

I've got pillion pegs on my bike but you'd have to be seriously in need of transport to jump on the back of my bike as I almost fall off alot.

I would hope so unless you leave really early or ride really fast. Must organise a get together between wellytown and palmy one day.

Hmmm - do you work there or are you making a genuine comment?<_<
It's because I wanted to pop in and see if any of the people that work there are selling a sj413 4wd because there's one on Trademe that I want to look at and the photo is taken outside their shop. Prob not, but would've been worth a chance since I'll be up there tomorrow.

Interesting day. Great day in fact.

Meanie, myself, Bonez, rfc85 and Storm had a nice ride up through to Apiti this morning. We got away a little late at about 8.30 but all is good. Played avoid the hawk (bird not radar) a couple of times. I think the damn things had it in for me. Only rode off the road once while looking at the scenry (note to self: pay attention to what you are doing)

Met up with GarryH at mangaweka and headed north to Taupo. Halfway across the desert road a stop was in order to discuss if the impending skyline was rain or showers. It was decided it was showers and we would continue. The shower lasted 6 hours and that made the ride all the more interesting.

Stopped at McDonalds for a bite of lunch and yes, it was expensive but, by god, it was crap. The healty amoungst us opted for Subway (why didn't I take that option).

1pm now and off to Napier. The Napier/Taupo road is fun. Had a good pace across it with my bike trying to eject me a couple of times.

Just before Napier we were pleasently surprised by MSTRS and his wife (sorry can't remember your name but sure it will come to me soon) waiting for us to offer hot coffee (needed that one).

RFC85 and Storm left us to it and headed home (hope your feeling better now rfc85) so the rest of us were off to MSTRS place for some drink and chat.

Run back towards Ashhurst put us home at 6. That makes 9.5 hours. Not sure how long we spent chatting/riding but great day all the same.

Looking forward to the next one.

Not too many pics as I didn't want to get the camera out in the rain.

Hey thanks for meeting us on the Taupo/Napier highway and the coffees at your place. Oh and the chain lube too.

Long wet ride but some satisfaction in doing it.

Hey thanks for meeting us on the Taupo/Napier highway and the coffees at your place. Oh and the chain lube too.

Long wet ride but some satisfaction in doing it.Yes the coffee was great. From here on in I'm going to refer to this ride as the Soggy Biscuit Run :)

Even though it was wet I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fast food at Mac Ds is a myth. Mine did 180ks plus :p Enjoyed the Mac Thermos(TM), the Mac Sandwiche(TM), Mac Apple(TM) and Mac Bannana (TM) though.................:Punk:

Replacing Gerties rh coil at the end of last year obviously sorted the previous wet riding troubles.

We'll be doing another run weekend after Easter all going well if any Manawatu KBers, well anyone really, are interested.

got back here @ 6.10,road was dry all the way from woodville to the takas so made good time,i almost binned on the napier -taupo,all the blood from my nose was going down my throat and i almost chundered, just on a corner, the back wheel took off and there was a few very hairy moments, trying to stay up right on my side of the road and not throw up in my helmet:sweatdrop
after that i went pretty slow, hence my late arrival.good ride for the first part, getting used to the pea gravel now but a long day when you travel up from here, but will do it again anytime

Enjoyed the run to apiti and the napier taupo highway(once the bends showed up ) Bit slow and wet at times, but an expierence nonetheless. Cheers to cowboyz for organizing the whole deal, bonez for showing me a clean pair of heels for most of the twisty stuff(was mighty sporting of you to pull over and let me be in front for a few minutes :bleh:) and everyone else for putting up with my bitching and moaning at taupo about the wet privates :O

Just a wee tip we found out on Hw 50. The Onga Onga dairy has a couple of petrol bowsers. I think the couple running it said they are open 7:30am through to 6pm daily. Guess who didn't gas up at Taradale :eyepoke:

Oh and three of the gang seemed keen on the Napier-Taihape Rd l, well maybe the bikes secretly wanted to go that way ;) . But being the nice guy I am I politely :mega: reminded them of the smidgen of loose stone thingamegigs along that route. :thud:

Gave Gerty a good look over after work today. A bit of water had gotten under the fork dust seals, reminded me to get some fork gaiters, so I lifted them clean the area with a rag and spray a little WD40 in there. Relubed the chain, a cheapy, which just needs a quarter turn on the adjustment bolts to get the correct tension. Also sprayed WD40 around the engine and carbs. Now she wont get a clean till the weather improves. Has a nice coating of muck and grime to keep any more muck and grime out. Don't forget to tension/lube lil Goosies one Storm or you could be in for some serious repairs if the thing flogs out the engine casings.
