View Full Version : 'Round the Bend' ride, Sunday 2nd April
VasalineWarrior
26th March 2006, 22:22
Greetings all,
I would like to suggest, nay propose a quick spin for next sunday around the manawatu gorge for the lower north island lads and lasses of KB (the best of course).
Start at around 9am (im open to suggestions, but any later than this is a waste of the day Velox), meeting at BP mana? (if this suits) and travel up sh-1 toward levin, cross over to the 'rapa, then back down and over the tuckas towards the tropical paradise that is stokes vegas to absorb the teachings of our esteemed teacher, Uncle B. Theres a nice cafe to grab a bite at lunch by the manawau gorge. This isnt supposed to be a RACE, keep your eyes peeled for the fuzz while on the main roads and save it for the twisty bits (Skel, this means you).
Map supplied shows a rough route (in red), but I have a few detours in mind to add a little ''spice'' to the occassion which im not going to mark, just in case any ''undesirables'' should be watching this thread

Hey - who exactly are you trying to tell that it's not a race? You'd be one of the most likely ones to boot it so what a loada! Sorry - had to fight against the pc-ness.
Yay, bbq at Uncle B's! Is the Stokes Valley supermarket open at night on a Sun?

Sorry, but I have been good lately havent I? I know its pc crap, but i was runner up for model citizen last year so im going for first place this year :nya:.
Leaving at 9 will be good for you. Go to bed early instead of staying up till 5am partying in town eh?
Uncle B-I was kidding about going to your place, but if your keen to chuck the barbie on then that would be much appreciated! Il bring some food to cook, or otherwise we can stop off at the supermarket on the way home

Been looking for an excuse to put on a BBQ, be a good way to finish a ride :niceone:
We'll put on buns, beef patties, sausages and salad. If you want steak and a beer you'll have to BYO.
Then we can sit round and listen to how the Vasaline gave UB the learn. :killingme

Is that the new BP that we're meeting at?
VasalineWarrior
29th March 2006, 08:26
Yeah, that new BP at mana bro. They gots some decent (well, better than most servo) coffee and ultimate fuel-for that extra little bit of octane!
Sels1-would probably be more like 930 for the kapiti crew (depends if we do paikak hill road), but sounds good to me. The first mobil as you come into pram right?
Blacksheep-How about you meet us in Shannon? Id give it say, three quarters of an hour from pram to get there so about quarter past ten would do it, but pm me your cell and I can tell ya when we leave

Hey, Hey, Hey, I think I may be able to make it to this ride!
I do find Woodville to Masterton a little bit of a zzzzzzz ride.
There is always the Alfredon road way, from Ekatahuna to Masterton which is a definite yahoo ride! and if people are keen, Dannevirke to Pahiatua via Pongaroa is a awesome piece of twisty too, I'm not trying to hijack the ride, just making a suggestion.:yeah:
I'll prob visit my friend overnight in wellies and show up at mana....cool!
Uncle B
29th March 2006, 10:34

Was contemplating the alferedton way myself. Have to watch for random tractors though, nearly went up the back of one around a blind corner last time. Could also do the water tower road in reverse, but this would probably be a little too long a day in the saddle?
Mikey-sorry looks like she is coming along at this stage. You managed then with only one footpeg and stuck in second gear though so shouldnt be to much of a prob

hey vasaline just be aware back road between levin, shannon they have just ripped up about 200 meters of road by heatherlea east road they are raising the road 1.2 meters its pretty deep base at present .. just to be aware when your approaching the roadworks as you come around a slight bend and presto its there :motu: :shit:
its currently the northern track they have done .. southern still there .. for a day or so :ride:

I'm shuddering at the thought of doing those boring straights from Masterton to Featherston at 1oo, yikes.
Count me in for the water tower road backwards. I take it we would gas up at that mobil on the corner, then shoot out towards castle point, but then take that right a few km's out of Masterton and go up that hill with the orgasmic sweepers? That road rocks lol and it leads to the top of the Water towers, sweet.
Then we could scoot towards martinborough and cut back into featherston, unless we are all game for the rollar coaster road hehehe
It's gotta be better than those straights, with plenty of flowing corners to relieve those tender cheeks
Chanceyy, Thanks for the heads up!:2thumbsup

Yep, I live on rural roads not dissimilar to Alfredon, I assure you, you need to be prepared for that sort of thing on all rural roads, along with the usual stock movements. I save my full on fun only for the fully viewable expanses of tarmac. I'm not trying to :hitcher: just a comment
And, I can now boast I've crawled my way up to highway biker yay :wari:

ok got even more of a low down for ya ..
cops cops cops
after the hell that went on out here last nite .. was out til 11.30 moving massive boulders off the road cause the idiots that did not even slow down .. and after 3 cars hit cones etc right outside muh house .. its very well lit up now ..
its 9.15pm and it appears higgens may be controlling traffic all nite but cops are out here too and will be targeting ... and they will be ripping up the southern track tomorrow . the northern track is higher than southern by 1.2 metres .. probably will be all same height by the time the weekend ride takes place
hey sugilite .. at least you have an idea of what kinda mess this is .. were you not in this direction a lil while ago ?

From what I can tell, the wettest part will be leaving Wellies.
I'll be leaving to come down to Wellies this arvo some time. I'll preview the backroads from dvirke to masterton. I know, a tough assignment, but once in a while you have to step up to the plate and take one for the team :shifty:

Shame we lost a few of you guys at the gorge as it got really interesting on the back roads after that. Liftback-sorry you got lost. Just remember that we always stop and wait at any intersections that we are turning at, so if you dont see us just keep going at your own pace and we wont be too far ahead of ya.

Sweet as, didnt know that, but now I do :niceone:
My own pace = speeding up to a corner, then not being able to see the whole corner, chickening out and messing up my line (and prolly pissing off the people behind me).
I need to learn to corner properly (on unfamiliar corners - the ones going up to and beyond tokomaru were sweet, I've ridden them many a time - albeit not on a sports bike before heh).

Good ride yesterday folks. P track was a goody (as usual) and the route Dafe and I took after we left yous was a goody also. D was resigned to the back through all the twisty stuff (wtf?!?!?) and took point for the straight stuff. A good ride back ta mate.
Headed to UB's place later on expecting to find a party, with VW drunk in the corner, UB burning some sausages, and V dancing on the table. Instead I found UB doing some maintenance on his bike.
Bunch. Of. Nanas.
Was good to meet new folk. Good to stay dry too.

Heyya team! What a GREAT ride that was!
I could not help but feel like crusty the clown on retro bike pulling into the BP at Mana with that arsenal of late model sportbikes lined up before me
The day just went off, great weather, great roads, great company!
I got back home to southern HB about 11pm. The roads were wet all the way, but no actual rain, sweet. I ran a deep hot bath, jumped in and watched the serentity movie on my sons sony psp! :spudbooge
Thanks for the ride on your K5 uncle. What a bike, simply sublime!:apumpin:
Cheers for the BBQ as well!!!
I'm looking forward to the next ride, I'll have the pipe on by then, and maybe even a rebuilt shock yay!

I resent that, I know damn well what that lever is for. I'ts to hang the plastic bag on after visiting the supermarket. Sheesh 101 stuff man

I thought it was the 'getting petrol speed' lever.
The supermarket idea has merit though...
